I think it’s not bad… but the truth is, it strips down the civilization builder aspect, and other ones, and it leaves you with tactical combats, one after other, with the same group of units. And the tactical combat is the weakest part of the game, there isn’t enough “meat” in it to support a full scenario around it. So gameplay wise is pretty lacking.

I need some help on cities. I built a pioneer, but only had the option to create outposts with it. Also, my city stopped growing even though I had plenty of food. What is the limiter to city growth?
With one que to build units and troops, expansion is obviously going to be slow. Any suggestions for growing the empire while still producing other things or was my early game just slow like in the early days of a Civ game?
You need to have them on a tile where grain is.

As IslandDog medtioned a tile needs to have yields on it before you can found a city there.
Food is the only limiter to growth.
There are a few ways to deal with expansion. On any city with Essence you can cast Sovereign’s Call, which gives +1 Growth per Essence to that city. That’s a pretty big bump, but it will take up one of your cities precious enchantment slots.
Also as your sovereign gains levels you faction prestige increases. Faction prestige is divided by your cities and is a growth bonus in all of them (so if you have a faction prestige of 3 and 3 cities each one gets +1 growth). You can also gain additional faction prestige by choosing path of the governor for your champions and Relias gains it by completing quests.
Then we have the Magnar way to grow your cities. every human or fallen you defeat is enslaved and added as population to your nearest city. If you raze cities that cities population is added to your capital. That’s a really fast way to grow, for those who dont concern themselves with the feelings of of their citizens.
Finally we have the military path, what I like to call the Verga path. Why build cities when you can let other players do that and just take them. When I play Verga I like to imagine the other players are my little farmers, cultivating the land and making it ready for the day I come to collect my cities. Sure they put up a bit of a fuss when I show up, but what good Trog doesn’t like a celebratory fight, and who am I to deprive them of that for all the hard work they have done.
Also worth noting that in addition to the Growth rate modifiers listed below, there are lots of techs and builds that increase the amount of Grain produced per unit of Food (or maybe it’s vice versa, sorry) available to the city, so that even once your growth does top out early on, later Civ techs and such can kick it back into overdrive by doubling or tripling the population cap (and it’ll grow faster by then, too, since your Prestige and other Growth modifiers are probably better, too).
Am I correct in that you only get the grain, hammers, and essence from the tile your city is actually on rather than the ‘fat cross’ method of the civ style games?

Yeah, the values in each tile are already taking into account any nearby terrain bonuses.

Thanks guys, that helps alot. The game sounds like it has some real depth and options. Warlock was a fun diversion, but I’m looking forward to diving into the main course!

To those having problem issues with the install, is Microsoft SmartScreen running by chance? I just had an interesting occurrence regarding it.
I installed Windows 8 about a week ago, so when I installed Fallen Enchantress at release, it was a clean install (I had no beta or prior versions to remove). The installation went flawlessly. Due to a problem with my user profile on Win8, I’d just finished creating a new user account, so I’m reinstalling my games to make sure they all work correctly.
I uninstalled Fallen Enchantress and re-ran the installer. This time, it hung for ages and ages before anything happened. After a while of my system just hanging there, I finally was able to see a Windows Smart Screen Filter message saying that it preventing the application from running. I was able to override it and told it continue, at which point the self-extraction started and the rest of the installation was fine.
I know various AV software can sometimes freak out about self-extracting .EXEs but to my knowledge I wasn’t running anything like that. I didn’t realize the SmartScreen filter was even monitoring stuff like that. I’m not sure if it’s the same case as Win7, but I thought it was worth pointing out at least in hopes that it helps track down some of the installer issues.

I wish you could see what the true “fat cross” of a city was going to be. A few times I’ve settled and there were still 1-2 settle-able spots around the edge of the area… now I’m wondering whether I could have fit 3 cities there if I played City Tetris right. But you have basically zero tools for figuring that out…
Also is there any downside to settling new cities other than strategic ones (more to defend, Growth is split, etc.). Cities seem like they are strictly resource generators and there’s no reason not to want as many of them as possible.
I wish it were easier to see which of my cities were idle… I often miss the little “z’s” in the corner. Maybe later you get techs that let them do something with their idle production, the way the research-specialized cities work?

So for some nebulous reason, I’m finding the game way more engaging than when I first poked around with it (0.98 beta or something?). That’s kind of remarkable, because that beta wasn’t that long ago. There just seems to be a lot of improvements and polish that you guys made in the home stretch there, so well done! I know you Stardockians sniff disdainfully at multiplayer, but if you ever end up adding it I can see this being a monster hit with my weekly game group.

I am very new to Fallen Enchantress. I was an original purchaser of Elemental but I chose to ignore the Beta and just downloaded the 1.0 version last night. From what I have seen I think I will like this new direction and tighter design.
I am left wondering, as I went through the website to download Fallen Enchantress, what about Elemental? I haven’t really looked at the game much even though I understand it had done pretty significant patches. Has it essentially been discontinued? Is there any reason for its current existence? I get the impression that Fallen Enchantress will ‘Jones Theory’ ( a little plug there ;) ) Elemental out I do wonder if there is any reason at all to pay attention to the first game.

Edit: I would like to add my voice to the choir and state that whatever else I am appreciative of Stardock making this giant effort to do right by its customers and deliver on a product it can be proud of. I don’t really know any other company that has worked that hard to repair customer relations. Hopefully my rosey impression of Fallen Enchantress pays off in genuine admiration but the fact that it was given to me rather then forcing the decision to ‘try my luck again’ has my approval.

No, there’s no reason. Forget the first game ever existed.
I just surrendered in my first game. I had planned to use Karavox’ss early wealth to buy my way into a couple of early cities but was still left very little land to call my own. Got too aggressive trying to expand and was losing ground alarmingly. I got Janusk rating! Janusk!
I’m going to make that plan work, dammit. I think I went wrong by never building a scout and keeping my early heroes together.
Any tips for surviving Juggernauts? Holy crap they hit hard.
Glad to see someone tried that way and it worked :-)
I kinda liked this way of installing software actually, no fuss with registry and whatnot.
Edit:
As we also make suggestions here, any chance the ‘scroll arrows’ on the side of some of the selection boxes can be bigger. I feel like I’m playing a RPG pixel hunting sometimes :) – and by bigger i mean … maybe, 1 pixel – not 20 “poor eyesight”. That said, I haven’t checked options to see if there is an option to manually select the size… I assume it is a bitmap so it can basically scale until it looks very ugly :)

I am quite enjoying Lady Irane and ranged units like flamethrowers. Death from the skies!

Blind them, high dodge units, take them out at range.
