Well, well, well. Todd Howard admits Fallout 4’s streamlined dialogue was not as successful as he hoped it would be.

I think our fans are used to it over time, that we do like to try new things. And we’ll have some successes, you know I think the shooting in Fallout 4 is really good, I think it plays really well. Obviously, the way we did some dialogue stuff, that didn’t work as well. But it was I think – I know the reasons we tried that, to make a nice interactive conversation, but [it was] less successful than other things in the game. For us, we take that feedback, and I think long term.

Or other things we did in the game, like the choices you have in the end. When we have an opportunity with something like Far Harbor, like “Okay, how many ways can it end?” Let’s give them more choice with something like that. And so it’s not just a one-off, meaning Fallout 4 comes out and then we forget about it.

I think it’s an ongoing thing, and I think that kind of feedback we get is really, really helpful. And you’re right that everybody does have an opinion, and I think that’s good.

So was Far Harbor better done than the rest of Fallout 4? How much game does it add?

Which is funny when you consider how well that last addon for Skyrim kinda went. I mean it wasn’t A++ but at least I thought they had it down pretty well then.

Rob I don’t know yet, but the consensus is it’s a lot of content with more decision making plus more nick valentine. Tom gave it 3 stars – (outa 5) which is almost 7 stars in a normal world (outa 5). That said I’ve not got there yet --survival mode almost, well --let’s just say --discourages exploration a bit --since you can die in a split bad decision.

Though I am getting pretty tough – jumped down into a pit and had a alpha legendary death claw try to maw me – ty baby jesus for critical banker! BTW I was using a bolt action plasma infused hunting rifle. Who’d a thunk that gun would be tough?

If you 3 people playing survival mode haven’t gone chemist/refreshing beverage – you may need to reconsider.

One last comment: Fallon’s dept store in south area --holy crap. I was fighting mutant overlords and their legendary counterparts – you think I didn’t send mcceary in first? Poor guy. That was a serious fight.

Seems most around here think that site is a bit iffy.

Well, as much as I’d like to take credit for his clever approach, that was Nick’s review!

I really have to be better about checking the front page!

That was a great review. It felt like when Kevin Spacey talks to the camera in House of Cards.

I think the worst they may be guilty of is taking advantage of regional pricing differences, not stealing credit cards and stuff like that. So, if that bothers you then I guess it is a good site to avoid.

I stand corrected! (Which sadly happens more than I wish)

It looks like Nuka World is going to be bigger than we thought. There is a description for it up on Steam and a price - $20. That means the total DLC is up to $70 based on retail pricing for the parts. The description is a bit vague, but it looks to be good sized area.

“Take a trip to Nuka-World, a vast amusement park now a lawless city of Raiders. Explore an all-new region with an open wasteland and park zones like Safari Adventure, Dry Rock Gulch, Kiddie Kingdom, and the Galactic Zone. Lead lethal gangs of Raiders and use them to conquer settlements, bending the Commonwealth to your will. Nuka-World features new quests, Raiders, weapons, creatures, and more. Enjoy the ride!”

Some people are speculating that this might be a “be the bad guy” add-on. The thing about “bending the Commonwealth to your will” implies that.

I have to admit. The NON-modded character (Laura the Militiawoman) is more fun. I’ve been running her and not getting bogged down in quests. Plus I decided to armor her up appropriately (eg, combat armor fully modded) and so things are clicking – not easy not terrible. Level 49. On this one.

Problem with mods is they say they change one thing but sometimes they change more than one thing --literally = my weight limit non modded with deep pockets is around 160 – modded --with purely innocent mods --is 240 – it occurs to me that going vanilla survival is the way to go. Even if I look a bit shabby.

I should restate one thing: Most of my modding for Bethesda games (since oblivion) has been to make the game harder and longer – for example, as bat mentioned earlier the requiem mod for skyrim – with survival mode in Fallout 4 --there’s not a lotta reason to mod anymore (at least for me) cause that fits. This was a development from the Fallout:NV hardcore mode (company wise? game wise? could there be a skyrim survival mode being cooked up?) It would appear that Bethesda is actually paying attention …

I assumed it would be in that size/price range. Otherwise nearly doubling the price of the season pass makes no sense. I mean, yeah, okay, they said something about more workshop DLC or whatever but let’s be real here, Far Harbor and now Nuka World are the selling points and the other stuff would be really questionable value as a separate purchase.

This thread convinced me to try a survival run of FO4, and I’m really enjoying it. The world seems so much bigger, and the combat is far more interesting with damage tuned up.

I am using a few mods, so it’s not a ‘pure’ experience, but it’s a good one so far, and certainly better than the base game.

What mods are you using? I’d also like to do a survival run but the thing keeping me from it is the sheer agony (on PS4) of using a controller to try and pick up every last item and carry them back. I wonder if the mods you use can be ported to PS4. Actually… I wonder if there is a weight mod. That is the biggest thing I’d like. I’m just too much of OCD gamer to and going back and forth to a factory just to get piles of loot (and tryign to remember where I stashed them) is not fun. I wish there was some way to help keep you from cheating based on guns you have that you could designate all the extra junk you carry as “non-active” and it would not count towards your weight limit but would not be usable until you went to one of your settlements.

Who is Laura? Is she someone who can join you? I’m tiring of the regular companions. I’d LOVE Willow from the NV mod to be transported to 4.

It’s what he is calling his character :)

Ummm… I knew that!

D’oh

Survival is great because it makes the world bigger, combat more intense, and you have to plan your trips. Logistics matter. That said, one of the reasons the Elder Scrolls games are my favorite series is that you can mod away things that annoy you, or mod in things that you want. The flexibility is incredible. For my survival run, here are the main mods:

Place Everywhere. I consider this essential. It removes the most annoying bits of settlement building, and I tend to go a little nuts with the sim-city aspects of FO4.
Increased Build Limit. More settlement enhancements. I end up spending most of my caps on “shipment of…,” and this lets you build more stuff!

True Storms. Scary storms.
Survival Mode Transition Save. Yep, it’s a cheat – this autosaves on transtions.

Weightless Ammo. I can’t handle leaving ammo behind on my scavenging trips, so here’s another cheat!
Easy Lockpicking. I don’t enjoy the lockpicking minigame.

I also use a bunch of purely cosmetic mods, but that list is fairly volatile as I check things out :)

Ok, now they just have to get the modding setup for console. I hope people transition these mods to PS4 quickly.

Yeap “Laura the Militiawoman” and her rifle --cleaning up the wasteland!

or

“Natasha and her pistol” cleaning up the wasteland with mods! (which is easier cause mods just magically make everything easier --even cleaning up)

There are someugly reports that mods on the PS4 are causing a lot of issues, mainly due to memory usage being limited to 900 Mb. Thats a bit annoying, since PS4 has been touted as being the best (by a small margin)console this generation.

“PC textures are used,” reads the first. “Memory and performance issues may occur. We are working with Sony on optimal texture exporting support in a future update.”
