Bethesda RPGs have always been, and will continue to be, grab-bags of cool shit and crazy bugs. I’ve seen my fair share of what could’ve been game-ending bugs in Fallout 4 if I hadn’t been able to go back to an older save or use the console to get past the glitch.

In general Fallout 4 seems better than Fallout 3 or Skyrim in terms of having less serious bugs, but Fallout 4 is also doing a lot less complicated RPG/dialogue stuff.

I’ll agree with ShivaX, that when you’re venting about an issue, one of the most annoying responses is “Everything is working great for me!” You’re looking for commiseration or a solution, not what sounds like gloating.

Yes, but it is still going to have bugs that often the only way around them is console commands. Like every Bethesda game ever. I don’t mind them for the most part, but taking away my ability to deal with them.… that I mind. Quite a bit. The game is far from a buggy pile of crap, but it’s a big Bethesda game, so shit is invariably going to happen at some point and denying people the tool to easily get around it is stupid. I ended up having to download a mod to deal with it and now things are fine. Well no achievements for me ever, but whatever. I mean at the end of the day that’s about all they did: deny achievements to unlucky people who tried to play Survival. Which is sort of shitty, but ultimately meaningless because achievements are meaningless. Still mildly annoying that I’ll never get them though.

Edit: And I didn’t mean to single you out on the “everythings working for me” thing, it’s just one of those things that’s annoying. I know I’ve likely been guilty of it as well, but it really is a pointless thing to say to someone having issues in most cases, unless you can do a back and forth to nail down what is causing it (which really never happens, hence it being pointless).

Just want to make sure I have everything I need to get the most out of Throatslicer:
10+ strength
Max big league
Max bloody mess
Max lone wanderer + have no companion
Ninja Sneak
Blitz
Rooted
Scav magazine 2 and 5

Eventually I will get Pack Alpha

Anything else I should pursue?

About as useful as “buggy as fuck” I suppose? Next time I’ll just reply with [citation needed].

And “least buggy Bethesda game” does mean something in a game of this size, especially after you factor in all the quest logic, npc scripting and dozens of different mechanics.

I know people love to shit on Bethesda for the bugs in their games but maybe try to have some perspective as well.

There’s a simple mod for that also.

Ho ho ho. Now I have Nuka Cola power armor!

Actually, FO4 is more complicated because the conversations are now real time which means more things can (and do) go wrong. The background tech is still largely the same, stat check system is still in place even if it’s only limited to charisma. The only thing that was downsized is the convo tree branching which just means less possible scripting errors in the convo logic - and I can’t really remember this ever being the case in any of gamebryo games, including FNV.

If it makes you feel any better, the only reason I wrote that is because I’m super anal about bugs/broken mechanics (my #1 cause of frustration in games, crashes I can deal with but not broken mechanics/misleading tooltips) and I honestly think FO4 is one of the better games when it comes to that, especially given its size. Also, I’ve put around 100h into Survival mode and was able to escape all glitches (there weren’t many) that I encountered by loading the last save which in worse case meant that I lost about 15-20 minutes of progress. Not exactly earth shattering which is why I thought that proclaiming the game to be a buggy mess was a bit of a stretch. But if you really want to avoid the time loss due to bugs there’s a console mod + achievement mod as @Grifman pointed out.

Do you plan to play on Survival? If so then I’d drop STR to 4 and get rid of bloody mess, it’s not worth it. To put it into perspective - I was oneshotting legendary mirelurk queens from stealth with 5 STR, Blitz, Ninja and while using the Pickman’s Blade.

Hell no, I die every 5 minutes, I play stealth melee. VATS, blitz and rooted.

Just played this today. I thought it was going to load a whole new, albeit short area. Instead, the locale is on the western edge of the map not too far from Vault 111. The god rays start hitting as you approach, and the sky turns green, like a rad storm is about to hit. Only no rads, just a green gloom hanging over the whole area.

The vault itself is fairly big, and not terribly difficult. It’s also a one-way trip. You have to go all the way to the end before you can exit. There’s also tons of ammo and crafting supplies. I counted at least 4 mini nukes lying around.

The “story” is kinda meh, and plays out as most vault stories do, via terminals. One thing I liked is how much the vault looked like a real, functional place, i.e. a classroom, laundry room, general store, jail, etc. Most vaults don’t seem to have that much detail. It’s also really fucking dark. I had my Pip Boy light on almost the entire time. They don’t really go overboard with showing off the lighting techniques, contrary to my expectations.

Anyway, no great shakes, but worth checking out.

Now that Nukaworld is out, it’s time for me to start playing. Once I’m done with the game, I rarely go back, that’s why I wanted to wait until all the DLC are out.

Any must-have mods for the best in-lore experience? I guess I should at least get the unofficial patch?

I want the experience as designers intended, but that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t pimp the hell out of it. I have a pretty good computer, so any recommendations on visual improvement mods? I’m eyeing at least the better blood mod.

Grifman - what mods are you settling on for your major run-through?

Question for anyone who has finished Nuka world, especially playing as a good guy:

Is it possible to get pack alpha before going full raider and attacking settlements? Can I do so without pissing off the minutemen / Preston Garvey?

I’m struggling with this too and I’ve been dragging a net through the subreddit looking for non-spoilery options.

It’s a little ironic because until this play-through I’ve never really played a game as anything other than a do-gooder and this time I’m playing as a kind of a vigilante ass, which isn’t evil but at least it’s a step in that direction.

Then Nuka-World comes along and (as far as I can tell) it really wants me to don the black hat and go all in on Evil. I’m not sure it’s actually possible to complete the questline in a satisfying way without compromising on the stuff Kadath spoiler-tagged. I’m really struggling with that.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions. I REALLY want Pack Alpha.

I think I’m going to Do the raider thing and blow my faction with Minutemen, not a great loss, but one I had hoped to avoid. After that I’m going to finish the last power source, go through town and get the cool stuff behind locked doors, finish off the Cappy quest, and then kill all the raiders for vengeance. It’s not going to make me feel great about my betrayal but it will get me all the perks with minimal loss. I’m not going to do any of the raider faction quests. I saved before trying one which had me go into boston square and as soon as I started it the whole town hated me. Hoping that doesn’t happen with this strategy too. Will be sure to make a backup first.

Yeah, I think I’ll do something similar after getting into an RP mood and trying to push what I’ve learned out of my mind.

I’m afraid to research much further for fear of spoilers, but I think the exact turning point is Nuka-World main quest #3.5 (wiki). After that, Preston hates your guts and the Minutemen quest chain fails. I think.

I really wasn’t expecting to have to face such a big choices.

Working on that now. Selected and downloaded them, now just activating them. I do that in groups, then I run the game and make sure it doesn’t crash, and if there is a way to check the mods are working, I then do a run through of some actions to do so (Bean Town Interiors - check a location, new weapon, check weaponsmith bench to see if I can craft it, new armor, same at armorsmith bench, etc.). I can’t check them all but I check many of the ones I can. So it’s a slow process but hope to wrap it tonight so I can start playing tomorrow. I’ll post my list when I have it all working and finalized.

Yeah but when:

I’ve already beaten the main story quest line so I don’t think it will matter to me, but I will lose Preston as a companion, I never use him anyway.

Dinner done, heading in to finish it one way or the other!

Fantastic thanks Grif!

Nuka World complete. Had to be the bad guy to get the Quantum armor and kickass melee skills. Worth it to piss Preston Harvey off. =)

Got a knife with the same damage as Throat Slicer at the end. But the proc is that it does double damage to full health enemies. YEAH! That’s way better than 25 bleeding.

Next step: Brought all power armor and goodies to Sanctuary.

FO4 Power Armor by Sam Posten III, on Flickr

Tomorrow? We burn ALL of the raider camps, villages and leaders to the ground. Muahahahah! =)

Follow up, if you have wondered whether what I wanted to do would work:

Yep, just fine. I quashed the Mason with Gage as my companion. Gage hated me as soon as Mason died. Killed em both and took their loot. Cleared out all 3 gang towns and the main area, now the Nuka residents love me and their doctor will treat me. I went back to commonlands and took back my 3 lost areas, now they register as mine and not as raider owned. The minutemen themselves still dig me but I have not run into Preston Garvey. So that’s a win/win =p

Hah, just died to a hidden bomb in survival mode - in Sanctuary - I certainly don’t remember that, must be a mod. Have to replay 30 minutes. Then I just died to a radroach who ambushed me whiile letting Codsworth pass by. Dammit, I need to build a bed!
