Did you find the Chinese sub? It was kinda neat. Missed it on my first playthrough.

Found that one on my first or second time through. Haven’t done it since, though, but it’s a good one.

I really do get what people say, that this is not a Fallout game. I’ll give 'em that. It’s a fantastic open-world shooter RPG though, if you’re able (like I am) to put aside the Fallout considerations.

Given how inconsistent, and in some ways totally bizarro, the original Fallout premise actually is, I’m good with this. I loved the first two isometric turn-based RPGs, but a lot of that would not translate well into a FPS format IMO, and really, I wouldn’t want it to. I would love to see another Fallout game in that format, sort of a Wastelands 2 style, but I’m quite happy with Fallout 3/NV/4.

My dearest hope is that Bethesda was trying out the base building mechanic in Fallout 4. What I mean is the very complicated UI, dynamic mesh interaction rules (the rules that control the valid/invalid placement and snapping of construction), the categorization of items and their interaction rules is laid out now. So as is Bethesda custom, they build on technology, gameplay and UI interface improvements and include these innovations in the their next games.

Can you imagine the next Elder Scrolls where you build settlements and fortresses as you conqueror territory in a single player game? Blend the military campaign of Skyrim with base building that really matters. Scale up the enemy count next gen and I’m super exited.

That would be wicked cool. Also, maybe they could figure out how to do the loading of zones and locations so it doesn’t take like sixty seconds on a reasonably fast PC with an SSD every time you enter the main world from a building…

Honestly, I’d settle for them making people that looked like people instead of deformed mutants.

Eh, I think it’s kind of variable. Some of the people, some of the time, look ok. Some, yeah, plastic fantastic lover indeed.

I’ve been playing MGS5 and looking at literally hundreds of randomly generated faces that all look better than everything in every Bethesda game. I seriously don’t get why their models still look like a dog’s ass. People have modded the games to look decent, but they seem incapable of doing it themselves.

Hell, people have made decent looking humans without mods using the game’s own systems, yet Bethesda can’t be arsed to hire someone who has actually been to this planet.

I know. It’s like Bethesda gives their interns a copy of the FaceGen middleware, and then tells them to go crazy… for every single game since Oblivion they’ve released.

Their decent modellers are then tasked to the environment.

This is true for a lot of things in bethesda games though.

Why spend tons of money doing something themselves when they can have their fans do it for free?

Luckily for me, the weirdo models don’t bug me while playing the game. Not nearly as much as the same farmer telling me raiders are harassing him for the umpteenth time, and sending me to the other end of the Commonwealth to kill three skags and a pimp in some drug den.

I’m running through some of Far Harbor on a more fragile stealth character on Very Hard. So much more difficult than my commando dude on Hard. This time though I’m done with the nice guy (or in this case gal) approach. Children of Atom, watch out. Religious weirdos and me don’t get along.

Part of the issue is that they’re not a big studio, a bit over 100 people, which is pretty insane considering the complexity of the games they do.

And on the plus side, I have 387 hours in this game, and I’m still finding new stuff, some of which is in the base game and not the DLC. The sheer quantity of stuff, and the good quality of a lot of the writing and design (ironically, outside of the main, rather dismal, quest line) really points to some talent.

Verrry late to the party on this, but enjoying the heck out of it, warts and all. I’ve done some moderate modding, not altering the gameplay just graphics and a few QOL bits and pieces (following Gernash’s STEP guide, pretty good).

What I just wanted to say that I’m excited about is that I just had one of those videogaming “moments”, you know, the kind of entertainment peak experience you can only get with videogames. I have Automatron installed, but knew nothing about it. So I got the info to go somewhere, when I got to the place it was at night, and as I approached the appointed spot I could see lasers lighting up the sky and a battle obviously going on in the dark distance. I approached cautiously, and saw some enemies attacking a robot so I joined in and helped the one being attacked (I’m a nice char on this playthrough), and discovered the sad story of her circumstances, with some moving holotapes re. some cool people who had just been killed.

The combination of coming across a laser lightshow battle in the distance, then an adrenaline rush fight followed closely by an emotionally moving bit of info just hit the sweet spot. It’s these “moments” I live for and seek in videogames, and got it nice and strong on this occasion (plus a few others in this game). Well done Bethesda! I can forgive you the occasional CTD, infinite loading screen or clunky user experience for being one of the few companies that regularly provides these moments. :)

Amen brother. So many times I’ve spent hours just wandering around watching the world do stuff. Sometimes it’s dumb stuff–like when in a conversation with a settler and there’s this huge Deathclaw wandering around int he background and no one is noticing–but always interesting stuff. The battles in the distance, which the (very good) sound conveys so well, along with the visuals of the laser flashes and explosions, are a favorite. “March to the sound of the guns” like Napoleon and you’re sure to have some free loot, and often some great spectacle. Super Mutant patrols are a godsend. They wander around, often with a suicider and some hounds, and they tend to get into fights with everyone. It’s not uncommon to run across three ways with SMs, raiders, and synths, or Gunners and BOS and Deathclaws, or whatever. Sometimes you can lure the bad guys into mirelurks or Yao Guai to help out your cause. Stuff just happens and it is gloriously chaotic at times.

Again, if you just forget about Fallout lore and put the main quest stuff on the back burner, this is a game that keeps on giving. The robot stuff is better than I thought it would be. Using Ada as a companion is pretty cool–she can be devastatingly effective, especially if you use her to tank for a squishy character type.

One thing I’m still not 100% sure of though is whether your companion affects your stealth. I think they do, which is one reason why perhaps Ada’s clanking is giving me away when I try to sneak. Oops.

Is there a mod for Fallout that makes attacks on settlements more brutal (more enemies)? And maybe one that gives you a better signal an attack is imminent or more time to respond? Maybe one that also makes more conflicts with more enemies that you come across?

Ada is my favorite companion because she’s the only one that doesn’t junk-shame me (well, aside from the dog, I guess) while I’m rounding up clipboards and desk fans.

Preston is the worst. Well, he’s the worst in every respect I guess. Sooo annoying.

Well, I just quit Watch Dogs 2 because it was getting so repetitive and the timed missions etc. were a drudge. It was my attempt at an open world after Witcher 3 which came after Skyrim. Both of which consumed me for months and months, especially just wandering around.

I’m thinking of Fallout 4 as my next open world game. What I’m looking for: I just want to create a stealthy sniper, don’t really want companions, and I just want a huge world to explore and create my own storylines in my head. I have read the main story is crap, that’s OK, I don’t really remember the main quest in Skyrim but it’s in my top 5 games of all time because of the huge active world it gave me to explore. I just don’t want gotta-do drudgery and micro management. This will be on a PS4 so no mods.

What do you think? Will I enjoy Fallout 4? (I’ve played all the Fallouts, FWIW.)

If you are looking for a Bethesda style open world experience, you should enjoy Fallout 4. The basic gameplay shines in survival mode.

YES. Especially as a stealth character. I’ve started out as melee stealth and later branched out into rifles. Tons of fun. Sniper (rifleman branch) is arguably the strongest damage tree in the game and it synergizes extremely well with stealth perks. I recommend Survival mode if you can stomach it, it’s so much more fun than vanilla difficulties.
