So what addons should I get for my style of play?

I rolled with vanilla setup and enjoyed it tremendously. Survival mode took care of many mechanics/gameplay adjustments that I usually have to mod in when it comes to Bethesda games.

If I were starting a new game now I’d definitely look for a mod that adds more weapons, preferably modern military variants (m4, h&k lineup, etc) - but that’s because I’m not really a fan of Fallout weapons, some are a little out there for my taste.

Also worth looking into are camera mods - both FO3 and FNV have something that allows you freely look down at your lowered weapon or even your feet.

Maybe others can chime in for other must have mods, I’m a little out of the loop when it comes to FO4 modding.

Unfortunately I can’t play this on a PC, it will be on my PS4, so I assume mods are out.

Sorry, I didn’t realise you were talking about DLCs. I’d start with vanilla version (assuming you have it already) and if the game clicks buy the dlcs later. Most require a minimum level in order to access them and they’re somewhat challenging so you got time to decide. I don’t think any are particularly biased towards any playstyle, fwiw.

Yeah, the DLC content I played through didn’t seem geared to a particular playstyle. The base game has tons of content and you can always get the expansions later if the game clicks. I played the game on PS4 as well and really enjoyed it. I bought the game and expansions again on PC to check out mods. Survival mode is great when playing stealth/sniper builds.

Oh, yeah, a stealth sniper rocks in this game. Also great is a stealth assassin pistolero, though that really requires something of a VATS build to really shine. Oddly I find sniping with rifles much more effective outside of VATS, as I can routinely hit the headshots with a much higher degree of accuracy than VATS gives me. There are perks that are pretty much required for a stealth build, and when you’re fully kitted out you’re pretty much a death machine.

One challenge for me with a stealth build is weight, especially of armor. I tend to want to have a lot of weapons so as to be able to use different ammo according to availability, but that gets heavy, and most stealth builds aren’t really structured around carrying capacity (though with enough levels it’s possible, sure; power armor though is sort of iffy). Weight of armor is a challenge early on, because the stealth and mobility you want works against, well, not getting killed, especially on Very Hard or Survival.

But yeah, taken as an open-world game on its own merits, the game is great. I would recommend as said to try vanilla, then I’d say get Far Harbor, which is good and has some good loot. Nuka World has great loot but it’s pretty much 30+ in terms of level, and hardly essential, though I found it fun. The other stuff is meh, unless you really want to play around with robots.

Your assumption is incorrect!

Sure, because of Sony’s restrictions, the PS4 can’t do as many mods as the Xbox One version and obviously not as many as the PC version, but it’s still got quite a few mods that fiddle with the game.

But, just like with PC modding, opinions seem to vary wildly on what are the best mods on PS4. I googled it and phrased my search request differently and came up with several different lists on what people think are the best mods.

Here’s a reddit topic with a few more suggestions from players:

Thanks my fellow open world fan! ;) Never occurred to me re: mods on the PS4!

RE: survival mode. Yes, this is really how Fallout 4 should be played. It’s also amusing to see all of the gushing about how great “stealth sniper” rocks in F4. That is because stealth sniper/archer is the lowest common denominator in ALL of the Bethsoft games, from Oblivion on up. No matter what, it seems, it’s always the path of least resistance. I mean, I’d love to, say, role-play as a bad-ass pistolero, but the game systems seem to active punish any play style but those 3x damage hits…

I just suck at melee, no matter what the game. And stealthy sniper fits me; it’s a reason I love sub sims. ;)

This is very true. You can do a pistol packer in F4, but you really end up being a shorter ranged version of, you guessed it, the stealth sniper.

My longest play through, to level 71 so far, is with a commando type, though, specializing in brute force automatic weapons. That’s fun as all get out, if not terribly subtle. But then, Bethesda doesn’t do subtle very well.

I created an Unarmed character in FO3 and it was surprisingly fun. With Power Fists and the right skills/perks, you’re a one-punch fighting machine.

Melee is about the only type I have never tried. I can’t get my head around how to approach so many of the encounters in the game which are all or partly at pretty long ranges, especially early in the game when you’re so weak. I’m guessing you have to sort of muddle through with whatever guns you have until you can start to really make your bruiser build shine?

A VATS build around a badass pistolero can easily be done. Pistols get so many shots in VATS, then you build up perks that benefit from VATS and you can clear rooms pretty easily. Meleel builds, as has been pointed out can also be quite powerful. Stealthy sniper is the path of least resistance but other builds are very viable and deadly.

Pistols are interesting in this game, I agree, though again the combo of stealth + suppressed weapon perks is hard to beat, so it’s not like you’re going to be as effective as a Clint Eastwood type gunslinger as you would be an assassin type. But sure, you can definitely do it.

I found the full-on commando build very effective, but I found early on, on a SM in the Commonwealth, a 7.62 legendary assault rifle with exploding bullets. Fully kitted out, with the automatic weapons perks, it was pretty laughably OP.

You can get Blitz pretty early and that makes melee a lot of fun in FO4. But it’s a VATS build and default Bethesda control scheme for melee (direction + power attack) isn’t very good so it’s a mixed bag overall.

Just finished Far Harbor and it was a great experience. Very atmospheric, good story with some difficult, at least for me, moral decisions to be made. Lots of different endings available depending upon your actions/decisions. Bethesda stepped up their story telling in this one. I just hope that maybe this can transfer over to the game a few years from now.

Yeah, I like Far Harbor. Some interesting set-pieces, and some good loot. And it’s funny how they really rag on Bar Harbor, ME.

So, purchased the game on the PS4 along with Far Harbour and some other DLC that looks like it adds another area.

My plan at least for now is to set up a stealthy sniper kind of guy, and then just explore. Not gonna worry about gameguides and did I max out this or that and guides to finding the best gun or best ending. Just going to do my own little role playing thing, wander this big world and explore and make the decisions I think best fit the character I’m role playing in my mind. Just open world exploring. Just entered the overseers office so I’m starting up, and to be honest it feels nice to be in a Fallout Bethesda game again. Not expecting the writing of W3 (or the faces - man, the faces in here are a step down from W3!) just enjoy the big old world they’ve given me.

One question - no plans to start modding right now on the PS4, but I do have a question. I went to the bethesda web site, signed up, and I see the mods for the PS4. But I don’t see any way to connect this with my PS4 account. When I go to the Link Accounts page the only option it gives me is Facebook?

Will you be playing on Survival?
