It is weird you can walk out. I think the game wasn’t prepared for players to do that, I did it as well. But if you go back you won’t be welcomed.

The railroad has some meaninful content to play through, and i just like them better
I hate all the factions. I also the hate the binary (trinary) story beat in that by choosing one side, you absolutely, positively have to nuke the other factions to bedrock.
I’m sure that a more nuanced approach to handling the factions would be a design nightmare, but that’s what I would have preferred. Of course, if F4’s writing was better, we could have had justifiable reasons for the genocide, but pretty much the only justification for killing the “hostile” factions is more or less “because they’re there”.

There’s a mod where you don’t have to do any of that. You can command the Institute and make peace among all the factions, saving the advanced tech of the Institute for the benefit of the Commonwealth. You can also imprison Preston Garvey, so there’s another benefit :)
“Another settlement needs our help!”
“Shut up, Preston. Pick up the goddamn soap.”

That was my major complaint with the game. I avoided settlement building until late in the game when I found out I needed to build something to go back to the institute, Then it seemed like every 15 minutes I was getting calls to defend some settlement. Even with all the firepower I built into them they had to have me to defend them.

Apparently there is a mod that removes the ‘defend an outpost’ too often but it needs to installed and run before you start a new game.

There’s a mod that revamps settlement attacks so that if you have adequate defenses, your settlements can defend themselves without your help. You’ll still get the message but you can safely ignore it.
Any idea what this mod is called? Sounds like something I’d be interested in…
All quibbles aside–and yeah, the game is a hot mess in some ways–I love this game. I’ve played through it numerous times, and was still finding new things squirreled away in odd corners of the Commonwealth even after hundreds of hours of play. Modding is where it’s at though after the first obligatory vanilla trip through Boston and environs. No guilt about being a walking angel of death, no qualms about breaking the game six ways to Sunday–just glorious open-world rambling, killing, and looting.
This is the one true greatness of Bethesda games. They’re hot messes in so many ways but damn do they build some vast, rewarding worlds to explore. For actual gameplay one must, of course, turn to mods (though it sounds like we generally mod in opposite directions - I’m always looking for a crunchy, challenging survival RPG where I have to explore those nooks and crannies to get to tomorrow).

That’s it. I’m resuming one of my games over this break since I’m waiting for the next-gen patch for Cyberpunk.

Yes.
This one has additional options re: the Institute and Railroad:
Awesome! Seems like this will go a long way towards addressing my big issues with the game.
…and that also is the beauty of these beasts. Whether you want to Munchkin it or Ironman it, you can mod yourself into your happy place!

Anyone have a guide to playing F4 with additional content and graphics quality mods? I’ve got a hankering to replay it, but the complexity in managing mod dependencies always throws me off.
I’ve been using the Nexus Mods Vortex thingy, and it has worked great so far. Haven’t run into any compatibility issues or needed to futz around with ordering.
Oh man, I really need to finish Fallout 4 before Starfield comes out. I have a feeling it’s going to be hard to come back to if I wait until after.

I was not impressed with F4 at release, but all these mods claiming 20+ hours of added gameplay have my nipples fully erect.

What questions do you have? I use Mod Organizer 2, my understanding is that Vortex is not really ready for prime time. I do a lot of Fallout 4 modding and would be glad to assist you in any way and answer any questions that I have.
