I selected “Hard” because I figured I could use a steeper difficulty curve but now I definitely want to go back on it. It seems a higher difficulty will just add an insane amount of health to the enemies. I’m a few hours in and I have plenty of weapons, I just ambushed some normal dudes at a broken bridge and I’ve put at least 15 rounds into one of them, not even a boss… He’s only down to around 60% health and I’ve hit him several times in the head. Is this supposed to be fun?
Takes me right out of it, I seriously hope this isn’t by design. Don’t go hard difficulty if you have no patience for this stuff.

Were the headshots in VATS or real-time? I remember in 3 and NV a headshot in real-time from a rusty varmint rifle would kill pretty much all reasonably low-mid-level creatures.

I have tried VATS and different weapons, it seriously doesn’t seem to make a difference. Even the wound up laser rifle doesn’t seem to make a dent in this guy. Of course I could have wandered into an area above my level but I’ve hardly explored at all.
It seriously just rubs me the wrong way, I was doing fine and then BLAM, I can’t kill anything. This wasn’t just one normal looking guy, there were at least two more of them. If that’s how they define different areas of difficulty, it’s pretty shit.
edit. Just tried normal, while it’s better they still take an inhuman amount of bullets to the point of boredom. I guess this really is an off limit high level area even if they look like normal raiders. Just burned through 15 stimpacks for nothing.
I am still showing that game isn’t released yet. Is anybody on the West Coast playing?

Unlocks at 9 PM PST / 12 AM ET on the consoles…
Yeah, it doesn’t unlock for a little over half an hour.
I wish publishers would stop pushing us to stuff like VPNs.

Sounds like they are higher than your level.
How do you opt into the beta patch, do you have to have the game unlocked first?

I couldn’t tell you, as I didn’t look until it was unlocked. But in the game’s Steam listing, you right-click, select properties of the game, and you’ll see a Beta tab. Just opt in.
Ooh, Steam just started using a lot my CPU. It’s like hearing Santa on the roof!
Too true! It’s busy in the backroom throwing stuff around.

Nobody’s pushing you except yourself. If you haven’t the self control to wait a few hours to play a video game, well . . .

Clueless Gamer (Conan) reviews Fallout 4:
“Microsoft’s version of the Apple Watch” might be the funniest thing ever in a Clueless Gamer sketch.
Apparently a nuclear explosion burned this woman’s dress off (IE amusing graphical:
Wow. That was an impressive start. I love how quickly you get into the gameplay proper, not like Skyrim where you were compelled to make and maintain a hard save right before you were given the chance to redo stats and such so you didn’t have to go through such a lengthy “tutorial” portion.
I love the way it plays, too - very smooth, feels great. Looting is a breeze, and I didn’t realize it watching streams but man the computer terminals DO look and feel much better than past games. The notes in the starting area were lengthy and well done, so I’m hoping for more of that as I explore!
The combat felt great, bashing with a gun or blocking with a baton worked really well. Hot keys are a great touch, if they were in past Fallout games I don’t remember using them.
Loved there are Charisma challenges! I know many of us were worried about that stuff, but I’m hopeful it’s very possible to play a fast-talking, high CHR character. Hopefully that holds up as I get into more populated areas and do some quests.
Controlling the game with Mouse/Keyboard, no complaints so far. Movement and shooting (I will never play this game from the 3rd person, talk about an awkward way to play) felt excellent, navigating the PIP boy was perfectly fine, and the keyboard shortcuts are logical (TAB doing most of the heavy lifting here).
Wow, I have to say, this game is REALLY purdy in person. Seriously, all the streams and even the PC Ultra video upthread didn’t prepare me for the opening areas and the starting area. Just super lovely.
More tomorrow morning, I better get some sleep now, so I can hit it fresh after I get the kids off to school tomorrow. :)
