There should be some kind of gameplay thread in any case, so people don’t have to use their psychic powers to determine at which page of a 60+ page thread the game was actually released.
Given that this is the designated non-spoiler thread, I’ll respect those among us that are most stringent about what constitutes a spoiler. I certainly don’t want to intentionally “spoil” something for someone, even if I don’t regard it as a spoiler. It just sucks that I have to go to the no limits spoiler thread to actually talk about the game. I’m really not sure what can actually be discussed here though. After everyone gives his/her general first impressions, it seems to me it’ll mostly be a bug report thread.
Fair enough. Duly noted.

I couldn’t agree more. I don’t want to hear about where to find awesome weapons and stat increasing items. FO3 and FO:NV are 80% exploration and 20% plot. Don’t spoil my exploring!
True, locations of items is bad, but the original question was more, do they exist? which I think it fine. And yes permanent stat books do exist.

So I shouldn’t mention the nuke hidden in the Goodsprings saloon, then?

I’d like to know how long the non-permanent books last…
Yeah it’s the same thing every time. People really need a jibber-jabber thread, where they can say “hey did you get to this part we will all get to when we play the game? cool, huh?” Some people have started, while others haven’t yet but want to keep tabs on the state of the game and whether it is worth buying. Then still more people have already beaten it and want to be able to mention in the final spoiler thread how they never expected Andrew Ryan to show up in New Vegas, and all their companions died on the suicide mission.
But 3 threads always seemed too nerdy and anal.
Like any drug or medicine item, no more than a few minutes.
You can take a perk that triples their duration, though. I’ve thought about it but had more pressing needs - i.e., maximizing skill gain.

Ah ok. Thought it might have been an hour or two, especially seeing how there was a perk that increased the time you were able to retain the boost. How useful could that perk be if instead of 1 minute of skill boost, you get 3? You would want to use them in specific instances (I want to pick the lock on this safe, I need 5 more points to use this dialog option, etc). How often do you then need to use that same skill again 3 minutes later? Very rarely it would seem.
I guess it would make more sense for combat skill boosting books…
I love how Obsidian added these awesome discreet boosts into the game system. There’s so much more fiddly and interesting stat stuff to consider this time around
Man, I should have listened to that little voice telling me pre-ordering an Obsidian game was a foolish example of wishful thinking…
No crashes for me (on steam), but between the save issues and the issues in-game (mostly npc related) it is hard to find this an immersive experience.
Still looks fun (when it works right), but I’m going to shelve this one until it comes out of beta.
You hit up on the d-pad on the 360 with a weapon equipped, and if you have any other ammo for it the name will be displayed in the lower right. It’s pretty impressive with 10 Agility, that’s for sure. On the PC I’m sure it’s whatever the equivalent key would be in the hotkey binds for items in combat, as that’s where I first noticed it as an unassignable direction.
I was wondering why I couldn’t slot a weapon into that upper direction quick slot. It all makes sense now!
So Tom, will you try again on the PC?

nevermind about this being a great game. POTENTIALLY its a great game. getting a crash every 5-10 minutes ever since getting some companions. was getting a crash every hour or two before that. now its more frequent.
I think Doc Mitchell is Michael Hogan, who played the XO Saul Tigh in the Battlestar Galactica reboot.
On the PC you hit 2 to change ammo type. You can use 1, 3-8 to hotkey items (manual doesn’t mention 9 or 0 but I wonder if those work as well).
It’s not something you can change from the in-game config, either. I’d really prefer to use a button on my mouse to change ammo type, and keep ‘2’ for another weapon. I guess it’s time to start looking through the .ini files.
