Wait, there’s a cap of 30 this time? I read an interview with the designer that said he was against hard caps and more in favor of soft caps. So I assumed that meant it would be really hard to level up after 30, but still technically possible. I guess maybe he was talking about Obsidian’s next game, not this one.

As I said, I hit 29 in 41 hours. Glancing at the wiki’s quest list, there were a couple dozen I didn’t do.
So, no, it’s perfectly feasible.
That’s pretty normal. Depending on how I choose to divide up the various sidequests, Vegas is usually around the halfway mark for me in terms of game time. Of course, I’m actually accomplishing a lot more due to auto-travel and quest density, but that’s a separate matter.
And this is why I prefer my open world games -not- to autolevel with me. I can finally take down deathclaws, albeit often losing a companion or two in the process and getting quite frantic as they get altogether too close to me. And it feels like I have finally arrived. I can take down a creature that just a few short levels ago would have torn me apart in seconds. That is something I will never experience in (unmodded) Oblivion, because I only ever encounter creatures at the point where (shitty levelling system aside) I am set to take them on.
Also, regarding levelling, there is one more thing. Right now, we do not know if upcoming DLCs will raise the level cap or not (my preference would be to not, since at level 30 player is almost immortal already). So I would like to play DLCs with my current character and still level up in them, so reaching 30 here would prevent that (assuming they will not raise it).
My guess would also be that they will not make DLC taking place after the endgame like there was BS for FO3.
Do I have to restart if I install a mod?
Also, I had my NPCs disappear on me. Had to use PRID to restore them. sigh.
All 4 mods I listed and use should work on any savegame, no new character necessary.
Brilliant! I was concerned these would necessitate a restart. The DARNified UI is tasty.
I had various times where my npcs seemed to dissapear. But in every case a)they returned finally to me, waiting a bit or appeared again after changing the level, b)they couldn’t enter in a room because a locked door, d)i fast traveled in the middle of a semi-scripted moment who fucked things with a companion, etc, i didn’t have any ocassion where they dissapeared completely.

Same here. I’ve had some odd moments with them, though. Once one ran off in a random direction after fast travelling, then stopped and walked back. Another time I had one disappear but turned out to be standing nearby - I went into the companion wheel and had to tell them to follow me. And yet another time one disappeared in a vault but when I went back to the level they came running up.
Speaking about companion glitches, in two occassions i had Ed-E shooting a neutral/friendly npc. I had to quickload or autoload the last save. No other companion gave me that problem.
I sent Rex back to the Lucky 38 a few days ago, but when I searched for him today he was nowhere to be found. Guess I’ll craft some missing posters and put them up in the strip.

Think I posted this in the spoiler thread, but useful here since its on point, the elevator in Vault 22 seems to magically fix most missing companions.
May try that next time but for me, they were absolutely totally gone. I know which location I last saw them before I fast-traveled/auto-saved, and went back but they weren’t there. Finally resorted to the console out of frustration.

33 hours in the game. Having a great time.
I got “forced” to make hard decisions that I feel will have a bad outcome (I am helping mr. House control the valley). Thats a really nice point, reminds me of Alpha Protocol.
It is already my GOTY and I still haven’t gotten to the strip ; )
36 hours, still haven’t visited the Strip, and it’s also my GOTY. :)

Does New Vegas have the same oblivion-style scaling enemies? I feel like I’m getting weaker instead of stronger, even though I’m only level 5 (nearly level 6).
The only time I can deal decent damage (with a fully repaired 9mm gun for example) is by getting a stealth critical headshot. In normal combat shooting people in the head in VATS only takes off small amounts of health. Another problem is that even though I’ve put around 50% of my points each level up into sneaking (and I tagged it), I still get detected awefully easily (before I get into any range where I can do damage, usually).
I think I’m doing something very wrong, so I’d appreciate any input, since the game world itself and its story (at least what I’ve seen so far) seem to offer a pretty compelling. I’ve played around 4 hours (according to steam) by now.
My planned play strategy:
- have some a semi-charismatic character who can deal with some missions by talking
- if I fight I try to sneak around and get some fast stealth kills, before trying to go for some range and trying my luck in mid-range VATS headhots

Without spoiling it, I just hit the Brotherhood of Steel quest bug. It happens at the end of the quest line, so if you don’t want to get into an unresolvable quest bug, feel free to read up on it to avoid frustration.
It’s the other way around, it does have 0 “Oblivion-style” autoscale, and maybe that’s why you are having problems with the enemies. Maybe you are going in an area with higher level enemies.
Follow more or less the path of the main quest until you are about to enter in Las Vegas, in these “startigng” cites and (more or lees) in the places around them the level of the enemies is lower.
What enemies are you fighting? Powder gangers? geckos? bark scorpions, giant radscorpions? Wolves? Fiends? …Deathclaws?
