This may seem like a silly question but how do I dismiss companions?
I can only bring up the companion wheel whenever I want to talk to my current one (Boone) so I can’t bring the other companions on board…
Bring up the companion wheel and choose the conversation option. One of the options will be to part ways.
Select the talk option, then scroll down to the option that effectively says scram.
I played quite a bit of New Vegas this weekend. I’m about 20 hours in now and at level 16 with Guns, Speech and Repair all over 80. Even now I’m finding the game to much more difficult (in terms of combat) than Fallout 3 ever was. I feel like a single Giant Radscorpion shouldn’t be able to kill me and two companions at this level. I really feel like the game shouldn’t throw four of them at me at the same time. Similarly I still can’t touch Deathclaws and the game likes to toss four to six of those at me if I stumble into their area. I dunno. I guess I just don’t feel much stronger now than I did ten levels ago.
Something else that’s really irritating me is when goals are tucked into mountains. I’m having awful flashbacks to Morrowind, complete with Cazadores in the Cliff Racer role. Endlessly walking around a mountain range for the one path up is so boring and irritating. Doubly so when I’m constantly stymied by invisible walls that prevent me from walking up what appears to be a completely passable incline. HATE!

Yeah the invisible walls on mountains in this game really suck. They should have made impassible areas way steeper and obvious barriers to keep mountain goat players like me from hitting invisible walls.
I once spent a whole two hours in Just Cause 2 trying to climb mountains. No invisible walls in that game.

Two things. First, what kind of gear do you have? Second, do you know to cripple the legs/wings of scary things to make them much less scary?

I’m about 48 hours in and I feel pretty badass. I can drop most things in about 2-5 shots. Half the time I don’t even have to fire a shot because the companions are that strong. Maybe it’s because I’m more focused on doing every side quest than pushing the main? I’ve got 4 stats to 100 already. I haven’t noticed any Oblivion-esque scaling issue yet.
Is there a range stat on guns hidden somewhere? It’s a bit unclear at what range I should use pistol vs rifle.
I have a silent sniper rifle which is just insane. I can headshot entire armies from great distances from stealth outside of VATS.

I’m unsure how a single giant radscorpion is wiping your whole party, then. In groups they were still quite deadly, but once I had some of the best guns in the game a single scorpion wasn’t difficult to kill. YMMV, apparently.
I have yet to encounter a Giant Radscorpion on its own, which is part of the problem I’m having I guess. My most recent encounter included four of them. My party wiped without killing even one. It doesn’t help that they simply rush at you with incredible speed and that the non-VATS shooting in this game (unless you’re at long distances) is utterly awful. Trying to shoot anything that’s in your face while also trying to get some distance from it is just about impossible, at least for me. I just don’t recall having these sorts of problems at level 16 in FO3.
I have trouble with rad scorps and deathclaws too, but once I get over my memories of older Fallout games, it makes a sort of sense. I mean, a humongous, mutated, venomous scorpion should be deadly, no matter how badass I am. Ditto with the deathclaws. I’d rather they be a challenge, or even too much of one sometimes, than become trivialized. I mean, even ghouls are nasty in this game, and generally in FO3 they’re for target practice.

Are the unique weapons not moddable? It does not appear so, that sucks!
Sure, but then don’t funnel me into an area that’s packed with a dozen Deathclaws that I have no chance against at any level, like a recent quest did. I’m all for having enemies that are too difficult at a lower level, but which become passable at higher levels, but I feel like I should be making some headway in that regard by level 16. Perhaps New Vegas is simply tuned to provide challenge all the way up to level 30, and that’s why I’m not feeling very powerful yet.
Oh, I share your frustration with the Deathclaws. That area is…insane. I still haven’t explored their area because I can’t take on three, four, or five at a time. At any level that I’ve tried it. At least it makes the quarry workers’ reluctance to go in there understandable…
Oh, i never saw them outside, in the Hidden Vallery or in another place.
Why can’t a Giant Radscorption kill you? Maybe in Fallout 3 a was a low level enemy, here it’s mid-high level. There are three types of radscorpion, the Giant variety, with grey skin is the toughest one.
And with a level 16 you want to kill a Deathclaw? Have you thought that perhaps the Deathclaws are enemies for level 22-23 onwards? And that’s one of them, against a full pack… well, let’s say level 27+ characters also want to have some fun.
Maybe it’s a quest for high level players? I have two quests like that, the one in the Quarry and the Black Mountain one, and while i am not strong enough for them, i am doing other quests. I mean, the game is full of content and quests everywhere.
For me the problem with the difficulty is that the game is too easy*. Not as easy as Fallout 3, but still the open enden world makes it a bit hard to have a challenge in the game, if i find something problematic i switch to other of the dozen of quests i have in queue.
I am playing in Hard/Hardcore, and thinking in perhaps i should raise it to Very Hard/Hardcore.
*edit: and i don’t even have Power Armor / gauss rifle / laser gatlin / antimaterial rifle / orother big weapons!

I dunno about that, I dealt with the quarry at level 14-15 (levelled during). I used a sniper rifle with AP/JHP ammo and crept around carefully (my stealth is only 25). I had to reload once when I was careless and a companion died, but otherwise was fine.
Packs at close range slaughter me though.
I tried when i was level 19, and i was slaughtered XD. I could kill the young ones, but the adult would make me a new ass hole.
