I loved the perk, but you should also take the Spray and Pray perk. Before taking Spray and Pray I was killing my melee companions all the time. Now they just shrug off the explosions.

Well when I go energy weapons only, and go into buildings, like fire building in Camp Searchlight, and kill queen radscorpion, who explodes, and kills boone, 3 other friendly NPCs that are with me AND cripples my legs and arms, then something tells me I will not like this perk. I like making goo out of people, not exploding them and myself too.
But powerful it sure is. And useless. For me.

You’re going to be disappointed in the Explosives skill.

I blew off my legs with dynamite in VATS once because the target rushed me to melee. It hit his chest and plopped down between us. It blew both our legs off, actually.

Well I never use explosives. Never ever do I remember using them in any RPG, save for occasional grenade when I am out of ammo : ).

I just like energy weapons ever since FO1, the turbo plasma rifle was so awesome there…here, not so much, sadly. I wonder what will plasma caster (aka rifle from FO1) be like.

Tis a flesh wound

The only explosives that really seem to be worth it in Fallout3/NV to me are the pulse grenades in situations when you are facing a lot of robots. There was one point in NV where I was very happy I had been hoarding them. But the other grenades are pretty weak. And while the game puts a very high value on C4, the one situation where I really thought having a timed explosive would be valuable is when I discovered that C4 is really just a powerful mine (despite the timer on the graphic) and so was useless.

You can use the detonator on C4, though…

Ahh, too bad. I was planning on using explosives as a supporting skill for my character. They are too dangerous to use?

What detonator? I checked the manual and key mapping and looked through my inventory and never saw any. When I looked up the situation on the wiki it recommended a different solution so I went that route anyway.

Well, like anything, you have to use it in the right circumstances. Don’t use energy weapons in close quarters if they are going to act like grenade launchers. Use an SMG/auto rifle instead.

I bought a couple from the Gun Runners, I think.

Nah. I played through with an explosives/melee guy with great success.

One key thing to remember is that they explode BIG and queing up more than 2 throws or shots in VATS is likely suicidal (since the enemy will close the distance most of the time). Dynamite is especially bad since the lighting animation tends to screw you.

As far as damage, Explosives are actually fairly insane imo. You can cripple 5 dudes with one shot easily. The end of the game was basically me firing my missle laucher and grenade machine gun at dudes and watching limbs fly. If they started to get close I’d pop out the Super Sledge and break them in half.

Fair enough. I can definately see that, when I had it I had the same feelings at first. Fortunately Veronica tended to keep them off me and often I could survive the blast and pop some stims and the like with my high medicine to recover easily. I almost thought about ditching it myself when I first got it, but I worked around it and just raped crap with it.

You buy them seperately. Any vendor that sells C4 tends to sell a detonator as well.

That wouldn’t happen to be in a certain vault would it? There was only like one time I used the pulse grenades.

I had 90 in explosives but I thought they were fairly useless. Maybe it’s better when you aren’t playing on hardcore, but carrying around missiles and mini nukes that weighed a ton wasn’t worth it. The Time Bomb isn’t very practical against enemies, and the Bottlecap Mine needs cherry bombs which I only ever found a handful of in 70 hours of playtime.

Agh, the casinos are really lifeless. I gave up and installed the “more populated casinos” mod. It shows how bad it’s the engine, the framerate is cut by half for just two dozens of generic npcs with lowres textures and pretty lowpoly models.

Yeah, Detonators show up on quite a few vendors. You need a good Explosives skill to use C4 though I think.

Check garbage cans and mailboxes. The ones that have stuff always had cherry bombs when I checked them.

I just found my first really annoying bug. I can’t find Marjorie in the Ultraluxe Casino, she seems stuck in the VIP area. So i can’t follow properly the quest (even then, i still can finish it by other means).

That quest had some serious bugs for me as well, though I can’t really detail them in this thread without going into big time spoiler territory. It’s one of several that needs a major overhaul.
