Has anyone tried a stupid character? I wonder if there are some specific lines attached 1 INT characters.
Same here. Stupid follower getting stuck on things.
Well, seeing how the NV GECK has “automatic handling for low intelligence PCs” (paraphrased), I imagine so ;)
No guts to try it yet, tho.

I played with a guy with Int of 3 or so and had all sorts of stupid dialogue come up.
I remember something about implants and my guy thinking it was “plants” or something and the doctor trying to explain what they were.
If you’re really trying to immerse yourself in the New Vegas experience, it’s essential to play with low Int. First things first, you got shot right in the melon!
The mountains with coniferous trees (something about their branches) are particularly treacherous for this, especially when you are playing the always fun “find a way around the invisible walls” game. The Jacobstown area can eat it.

Its worth it for the comments from the Doc when you wake up if nothing else.
Oh god the invisible walls. I hate the existence of invisible walls, especially in games where there isn’t always a clear path from point A to point B.
Once I had climbed a friggin mountain only to run into an invisible wall so close to my destination that I got credit for discovering it. In frustration I pulled up my pip boy and fast traveled the approximate 2 meters through the invisible friggin wall. I really REALLY hate those things.
Mods to remove most of them are already out. Yay PC gaming!
I hope mods can address the goofy geometry alongside that. Today in a train tunnel that was…challenging to get to I came across an entrance I needed to get to that resulted in a fall through floor and reset to entrance, no matter how many times I retried it. The unfortunate glowing one in that room kept plummeting into the abyss and then resetting every time I fell in. I may never find out what was beyond that door.
Either way, looks like I’ll be migrating to my pc for the replay.

Ok my next character will be a 1 INT energy weapons/explosives meathead.
I think I know the tunnel you mean. On the PC, the glowing one behaved as one would expect.
My next character is definitely going to be a 1 CHA/INT… but I can’t decide on Melee or Unarmed… Suggestions?
super sledge is supposed to be really good.
It’s only my second fall through level incident in 56 hours, so I’m hoping it will continue to be infrequent.
Consider that only one of those allows you to get a chainsaw. OTOH, Unarmed lets you use the golden gloves to insta KO Deathclaws, by all accounts. I’d have to give the edge to the latter, just because people keep teaching me fight moves that I don’t use because my bullets do the heavy lifting.

I just tried to start a new game with a 2 INT character and I was disappointed that so little was different. It seems like maybe you need to go all the way to 1 to suffer anything more then an occasional dialogue choice and the experience penalty (or whatever.) Plus there seems to be very few decent options for unarmed to start, or melee for that option, in terms of gear. Despite a high strength and the heavy hitter thing, I had to resort to using the razor to kill Ringo. Punching him did little or no damage. Gun and energy weapon characters seem much easier early on because of the ease of getting a good gun very quickly.
I’m kind of bummed, really. Back when I first played Fallout 1 I found doing a gun character was frustrating early on. But I saw a tip where it was suggested that combining unarmed or melee with guns was a good choice and my favorite playthroughs with Fallout 1 and 2 were with the unarmed plus gun combination. A barefisted character could do reasonable damage early on so even though you didn’t get the brass knuckles update until later you were still viable. I never was able to get the combo to work in Fallout 3, in part because of the lack of being able to target specific body parts in unarmed combat, and because gun only is completlely viable from the beginning in that game. So I defaulted to the gun only thing my first time with New Vegas, but I’d love to do something with unarmed. It just seems underdeveloped again.

Well as I and others have posted a couple times melee is totally viable and frankly overpowered, with the right perks true unarmed becomes good late game. Early and midgame you’ll need to use the unarmed weapons (knuckles, bladed gauntlet, etc.)
There are some strange flags on the Ringo character, as shooting him to death only knocked him unconscious in my game.

Early on you can get a decent melee/unarmed pretty quick. Powdergangers carry Tire Irons (which are plentiful and decent damage/dps). as well, the boxing tape/gloves from Chet are enough as long as you have unarmed above 30.
and there really isn’t any lockout for low attributes… which i’m guessing is intentional. This game is not just targeted at Fallout 1/2 fans. there’s a fair bit of min maxing twink fans since Fallout 3’s success.
overall i think the difficulty is fine in terms of combat. though i do wish there was some more barriers for roleplaying… it kind of defeats the purpose of a good roleplaying game when a 1 int character (basically a vegetable in my book!) can get thru without any repercussions! maybe in the sequel/dlc. there is alot of ways to add attribute requirements that can add to the game. but i can just see ppl bitching and moaning on the opposite end.
There is the odd low int dialogue, but for the most part you’ll have the same core dialogue options. It’s not like the old days where virtually line of dialogue had low int version so it felt like getting very different dialogue trees. The Doc makes different comments depending on how you spec your character, though. Also, my high int character has had a few high int dialogues.
