If you are on PC, you can assign hotkeys to weapons. And the ‘2’ key will cycle through ammo for your current gun. That makes switching weapons and ammo really nice and easy.

Metacritic?

Really? Should we all run to buy COD BLOPS, GEARS OF WAR, ASSASINS’ CREED, etc? Maybe Black & White and Spore, also?

The general consensus in this same thread is that Fallout New Vegas is better than Fallout 3. There are 3-4 people who liked F3 better, and the rest liked Fallout New Vegas more. But maybe this thread is biased to people who liked Vegas, we should make a poll.

Playing on the 360.

Yes, yes, yes, no, maybe.

Seriously? Black and White is miles funner than Spore ever was.

Of course New Vegas got lower scores, the ancient engine + same graphics as FO3 and launch bugs took care of that, despite it being much better game.

Ugh, Ass Creed I… II was at least acceptable, I wasn’t.

If VATS was any worse i never would have used it. In fallout 3 vats mode made you invulnerable when it was active, was highly accurate and i am pretty damn sure it had some damage bonuses to boot. In fallout new vegas the invulnerability is gone meaning if you queue up a bunch of long actions some deathclaw could bite you in the back and kill you during them. The out of vats combat system was also vastly improved. For the first time ever, experienced fps gamers (well in a fallout game) can do just as well without VATS as they aren’t giving up huge amounts of survivability and damage by doing so.

I expected people who liked VATS to be displeased with this direct in NV, but i never expected people to say it is still too good. Unless they have never played fallout 3…

  • The companions could use streamlining as well. Why can’t they just let me create a party and then pick who is currently with me instead of making me ditch one person to pick up another?

There is always a limit on the number of companions you can bring with you. Fallout 3 only let you bring one and they were semi intelligent walking turrets with no personality. The game would certainly be a cakewalk if you had an army of followers behind you.

  • Why are all the best bonuses on the worst clothing? My character looks terrible whenever she puts on her best combat gear (1st recon beret and combat armor).

I liked combat armor personally. The recon beret didn’t fit with my character, but there are always a few REALLY good items in any rpg and they can’t be what everyone is looking for.

  • Some of the collectibles are very poorly explained. I just figured out, at level 16, that I should have been looking for star caps.

I am pretty sure once you search out some town at the very start of the main quest (people not part of the main quest also tell you to go there) you run in to someone that explains the star caps.

oh and black and white is better than spore, although both games are probably the biggest examples of MASSIVELY overhyped games turning out to be stinkers in our time. black & white is just less of a stinker because the quality is the same throughout the game where as spore goes from being a fun XBL arcade game to a low budget rts.

All I know is that I frequently walk into a room with ~3 enemies, throw up VATS and they all fall within half a second of game time. I’ve found a lot of fights that were cakewalk with VATS and anywhere from challenging to impossible without. Not only does VAT enable super human feats of destruction but it’s much more ammo efficient.

Yes, you aren’t invulnerable. However you’re still able to switch targets instantaneously, reload at x10 the speed you would otherwise, etc. If you don’t have enough time to VATS during a Deathclaw attack then you’re probably dead anyway (hint: use VATS earlier – like I said, I almost never miss with it so there’s no reason to wait for the last second).

I feel like the inclusion of VATS requires that the game be balanced around that. If it weren’t for VATS I kinda think I’d have have more fun playing a game that was balanced as a straight up shooter.

There is always a limit on the number of companions you can bring with you. Fallout 3 only let you bring one and they were semi intelligent walking turrets with no personality. The game would certainly be a cakewalk if you had an army of followers behind you.
You’re misunderstanding me. I don’t want all my followers out at the same time. I just want to be able to go recruit Boone, then find another person, and pick which of them is out at a given time instead of ditching Boone entirely to pick up a new follower. I’d be fine if I were only able to switch followers at certain points (i.e. when sleeping) but as is the game doesn’t really explain what’s going to happen if you ditch a follower, it took me forever to even figure out how to do so, and it’s a pain to switch between them.

I liked combat armor personally. The recon beret didn’t fit with my character, but there are always a few REALLY good items in any rpg and they can’t be what everyone is looking for.
If there were 4 different crit bonus items I’d at least have a choice. As is, my crit-based character pretty much HAS to wear that beret given that it’s the only item in the game with that bonus (that I’ve found anyway).

I am pretty sure once you search out some town at the very start of the main quest (people not part of the main quest also tell you to go there) you run in to someone that explains the star caps.
You get the explanation once you get 6 star caps. That took me a long time (not surprising as I had no idea that I should even be looking for them).

I had a close call last night, and thought I’d have to shelve this game (which I’m loving) for some time.

On XB360, I finished clearing up an area, saved, and then moved on. Once I got about 15 minutes in, I tried to save and it just locked up. I reloaded, re-did the moving on part, and tried to save in roughly the same spot as before. Again, lock up. I reloaded again, fast travelled to a location, and then entered a building. Screen goes black and locks. I went back through a few recent saves and this happened each time. Finally I went back to a save a couple of hours before, and it let me continue.

So I’m wondering what caused it to corrupt a few saves (if that is indeed the problem), or if I did something between my last working save and the few that caused problems to create a situation. Wouldn’t it just be the most recent save that gets corrupted?

The only really big thing I did that I can think may have messed stuff up was to move a TON of items through the postal box to my hotel room and sort it out. Anyone have a similar situation? I have thinking that the 35 hours I’ve put in may go down the drain, but I love the game so much. That stuff is sitting in the postal box until I’m sure I won’t kill my progress again…

Searched using google, didn’t find anything cluing me in to what it may be, but a lot of crashing and corrupt saves that express in the same way.

I consider myself lucky, and am now saving every 5 minutes or so, rather than 1/2 hour intervals.

EDIT - Also, I think I lost a ton of bobby pins I had on me. Weird…

Yes, a thread of fans of FO:NV is a far better measurement than comparing the results of (supposedly impartial and somewhat professional) reviewers.

The hivemind is strong with this one.

Just remember, Metacritic is the king of the Hiveminds. So it’s a bit difficult to accuse us of being just a “hivemind” and try to use Metacritic in your argument.

Look up the word hivemind and save yourself the embarrassment next time. A collection of independent reviews is in no way is a collective consciousness or groupthink.

While I’m not aruging you’re main point, because it’s silly, I think you might want to consider the bolded text above…done? Now think about the 7-9 scale and tell me again how “independent” reviews are…

Game technology improves rapidly. There is no 90%+ game from 2001 that would get a 90%+ rating in 2011. Legend of Zelda, Gamerankings top game of all time, I bet would likely get 70%, dated graphics, derivative gameplay LOL if released in 2010 . Fallout 3 a 2008 game, for me was a breakthrough game, game of the year etc.

Two years later FO:NV isn’t breakthrough game. However, it is significantly improved from Fallout 3, in almost every way, better writing, more interesting main quest, better VAT, better combat, more weapons variety, better balanced skills and PERKs.

Finally, FNV suffered from more severe bugs especially on consoles than FO3. If you are Tom Chick and can’t play the game without it crashing every 20 minutes, you can’t give the game a good score. Simply using Metacritic as the definitive judge of which game is better is flawed.

If I understand Blackadar’s point, the issue isn’t just about poo-pooing Metacritic as flawed, it’s rebutting with THIS thread as counter-proof. Certainly, relying on this thread is more flawed than relying on Metacritic.

So, I’ll take the Metacritic as the more accurate “measure” of the subjective question of which game is better.

Personally, I like NV a smidge more than the original, but I’m a little disappointed that it is only a smidge better, given how much time elapsed between their releases.

You and I guess Blackadar have a point. A better way would be to have a simple poll asking which is better. Frankly I don’t care enough to start one.

I agree that they perhaps could have pushed the envelope a bit in making FNV. On the other I hand I look at Civ V vs Civ IV, and I am happy they were conservative in their changes on FNV.

NV is leagues better than FO3, but I appreciate quality writing and the devs at Obsidian craft better quests and story and NPCs than Bethsoft.

This is just not true.

Starcraft 2, a 12 year old game released with minor changes: 90%+ rating.

Morrowind, oblivion and fallout 3 aren’t much better, if at all. There is almost no change between the games other than the introduction of VATS and tweaking of rules in fallout 3. If bethesda themselves haven’t changed their last three games, it seems doubtful that an outside developer will either (although obsidian did change it a lot and actually changed base mechanics like VATS that totally rebalanced the gameplay).

Strangely few people remark about stagnation when the marketing budget reaches a certain threshold…

This brings me to my next point, EA Presents: Madden Call of Duty 2011, Brought to you by Carl’s JR.

oh and if i was a betting man, i would bet the next TES game, besides looking a bit better and being a bit flashier, will not shake the boat much, but will still get 90%+ ratings. This is just the way the review industry works overall, barring VERY few outliers.

You’re not kidding. Switching back and forth between Morrowind, Oblivion, and Fallout 3 you can tell their just minor iterative improvements. Ok, the Morrowind graphics are awful, but the basic gameplay is the same.

Edit: God, I can’t get enough of the Idiocracy branding.
