While I liked FNV, my view in retrospect is that the companions were not, on the whole, all that interesting. Too many of them either have bland stories or do not interact with you at all (outside of the occasional random bark or other noise, depending on the companion.) And as others have noted, they pretty much become mute once you resolve their personal quest.
Hey, on the plus side, they do not constantly shoot automatic weapons into my back so that is a huge upgrade from previous fallout games!
/me whistles always look on the bright side of life, dadum dadumpty dadumpty dum.
Damn you New Vegas!
I am doing For the Republic Part 2 and my first task is to enlist or kill the Great Khans. Great, I already have their support! Uh, oh, the game doesn’t recognize that because it’s fucking bugged. I guess I can go back a few hours or kill all the Khans, neither of which I want to do.
Also, I dismissed Boone back to the Lucky 38 but ended up finding him wandering in the wasteland and instead of addressing that little problem I went about my business and now he’s not to be found at the Lucky 38 and I don’t remember where the hell I saw him, so now he’s missing. Fucking hell.

If you are playing on the PC you can use console commands to fix quest bugs (look on the Fallout Wikia) or summon companions if they get lost.

This. Man, that used to piss me off so much. Fucking Marcus, always shooting his mini-gun into my ass to try to get to deathclaws or super-mutants in front of me.
Marcus was always fine. Sulik, though…

Yeah, they aren’t terribly interesting. Veronica at least has some banters with other people in the BoS bunker that are amusing, and Raul has a few that he repeats over and over that were funny the first few times. On the whole, the game needs way more banters, interactions, and optional ways to solve quests using the companions. ED-E, in particular, seems woefully underused-- there were many times when I wished he would do a “beep-boop-beep” thing like R2-D2 and help me hack a computer or something with an interface that he pokes out. I actually found myself wanting to trade Boone for Bitter Root, who has a much more interesting character concept and is also in 1st Recon.

You’re a brave man to give Sulik a gun. Super sledge is more his speed.
It was not a mistake I made many times! After a few encounters where Sulik tried to kill bugs on the Chosen One’s spinal column, he was given a sledgehammer and told to stand out so all the little red dots could find him instead of us. Sulik says he can use a submachine gun. Sulik is a damn dirty liar.
Nope, not on the PC, 360.

You can try the elevator in the vault taken over by plants. That elevator have the ability to “summon” companions. But It will only work if you have selected it.
Which vault? And what do you mean by ‘selected it’?
I’m pretty sure he means Vault 22 (“Stands the Grass” quest). Apparently if you use the elevator to change floors, your companions tend to show up right next to you, even if you’ve told them to wait.
I’m not sure how effective it is, but I did notice this once myself. There’s some stuff you want to do on the bottom floor where you don’t want your companions with you. I left them on floor 2, took the elevator, and they showed up. However, I had only told them to “wait here,” I hadn’t actually dismissed them entirely.

I’m pretty sure the Vault 22 thing only works on active companions that have disappeared. Cheesy’s problem is that he dismissed Boone and can’t find him again. Outside of the Lucky 38 and the original hotel where you get him, I’m not sure where else you would look.
I think the game is trying to tell him to use Cassy, the best companion in the game.
I am using Cassy, but I don’t want to. Plus I have this side quest in my log that’s just itching to do something unkind to her.
Heh, I wonder how other people handled that.
Me, I was just looking for a good excuse to off those guys after I did a few quests for them. So I went there, told them to fuck off and obilerated everyone there. Good loot! Just wish I had the option to take over their store afterwards, true outlaw justice style.
I noticed on my evil playthrough that delivering up Cass brought up a challenge to “destroy all companions.” (Though it only said 1/3.) I then found out you can get rid of Veronica in an extraordinarily delicious manner. Anyone know who the third companion you can dispose of is? I assume the challenge means some way other than outright killing them.
Edit: Apparently this challenge is added by Dead Money.
Really? I can’t see how you can top the ED-E/Boone combination, who seem to kill enemies before I see them.

If you are playing on the PC version pick up “A World of Pain” form newvegasnexus.com(Can’t post a link lol) It adds tons of new locations in game that fit pretty well. It adds a ton of underground locations full of bad guys as well as turning some boarded houses/hotels/whatever into explorable locations.
