Never was unplayable that I know of.

Mentioned earlier in the thread that the key to multicore/Win7/x64 happiness for me was:

Edit the “FALLOUT.INI” file located in Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Games\Fallout3

Make a backup of the INI file before making any changes to it.
Search for “bUseThreadedAI=0” and change the value from 0 to 1.
Add another line under this and paste in “iNumHWThreads=2”

The result should look like this in the ini file:
bUseThreadedAI=1
iNumHWThreads=2

Crashed like a bitch all over the place otherwise

Yes, for Fallout 3 that was a known issue, it doesn’t play well with multicore PC’s.

Known issue for Vegas, too … the settings are the same and I couldn’t get NV to play nice without adding this

I’m not convinced it’s that, guys. If I turn off the Steam overlay it does not crash - at all. As it stands I’m blaming Steam.

I’m also sorry to say that since I’m maxed out at level 30, it makes continuing just a little bit less pleasant. Capping the level at thirty for this kind of game is insane. If I’m not mistaken, I think it was less for the initial game - I’m playing the GOTY edition. A side effect of not getting any more XP is that you no longer get that chime sound effect either. I’m still discovering new places and it’s mute, apart from a brief 2-3 second notice in the top left corner. Ugh. The same goes for hacking computers - mute. Pretty bad design flaw.

On a positive note, I just discovered, 130+ hours in, that you can queue shots in the V.A.T.S… :P

Huh. Uh - Hm. Well - uh, that’s going to change the game a little. :)

Going to give this a try myself as I have tried most other things so far. The main off put for me is the instability and by now Obsidian should have gotten their act together and fixed this after such a long post-release period.

Well, what did you think those action points were for?

Seriously.

I hit 30 during the finale and that took me ~56 hours. I’m not sure what’s there is to do for 130+ hours.

No fast travelling? Doing all the side quests? Exploring all the ruins?

I think my main play through was 114ish hours when I finished the game. I had long since hit Level 30 though.

That’s why it’s highly recommended for both games to use a slower leveling mod.

Not fast travelling is crazy. ;-)

I did all the side quests in my log, though I’m sure I missed some. I explored enough for the 125 achievement but didn’t feel compelled to explore more. I felt I got all the highlights. So it goes.

So, given that Dead Money is going on sale for half price tomorrow, how good is that DLC? The Metacritic reviews aren’t overly kind (69% critics, 67% players).

People here seemed to like it - I found it frustrating becuase they steal all your gear, and then put you up against enemies which are fairly hard to kill with limited ammo/repair options. If my character would have been spec’d for melee or unarmed, it wouldn’t have been so painful.

I don’t fast travel for the first…75% of the game or so. I like exploring, and there’s stuff out there you won’t stumble upon if you’re fast travelling everywhere.

Where is it going to be half price? I was thinking about picking it up as I’m getting interested in the DLC rumors in general. Unlike FO3, it looks like the hooks for the FNV DLC run pretty deep in the shipped game.

As for Dead Money, I’ve heard the companion characters are really well done but that people tired quickly of the enemies you face. The story is supposed to be pretty interesting.

Edit: Nevermind on the price thing, I see that Major Nelson announced it was part of an XBLive sale. Seems unlikely the offer will apply to the more recently released PC version, which is what I would be after.

I liked it a lot. It has some very interesting characters and expands the New Vegas lore in an interesting way. I didn’t mind having my gear taken away, since I was specced for energy weapons and they give you an energy weapon (holo-rifle) to start with. I was also level 26, so even though melee/unarmed weren’t my specialty I didn’t have trouble taking out the enemies with the new “Cosmic Knife” when necessary. What caused me to die were the grenade traps sprinkled about in the beginning, and in the later parts there are some tough “fights” with enemies that can’t be killed (they must be disabled in a specific way). Overall, I liked the new items it added, I liked the story it told (and the characters) and I liked that it was challenging (even if it was a bit of a slog).

I picked it up a few hours ago and am so far having fun with it. The character I’ve met already is pretty unique, and I’ve had no issue with my lost gear having found armor and several guns/ammo already. I’m looking forward to working my way through it.

I enjoyed Dead Money but got seriously tired of all the combat by the time it was over. But it’s a cool setting and the heist angle was pretty interesting.

I was using V.A.T.S. for one shot at a time. :P
Play and learn.

Plenty. I’d guess I still have a good 40+ hours. Just because your interest waned early. Some of the time is spent going back and forth hording stuff. I’d guess 10-20 hours, easy. Blame my mind for that. I haven’t even touched the Pitt or the Spaceship yet, or even several more locations yet. I would not be at all surprised if I go over 200 hours. Can I please play how I like. ;-)

Another thing I greatly dislike is the repair situation. My repair skill is maxed at 100, yet it’s basically useless without spare guns. Why can’t we use scrap metal for example to repair guns? Why can an NPC with a repair skill of 15 repair my damaged guns and I can’t? …without using another gun of the same type as parts? Why doesn’t the weapons workbench allow us to repair guns?

Why is Bethesda forcing encumberence in these games? They can still restrict what you wear/equip as armor/weapons, but why how much you can carry? It’s annoying as hell.
