I’ve been playing the shit out of it lately. I’m about ready to finish the game; I’m trying to wrap everything up. Then I might go back and do FO3 AGAIN
I’m about ready to go back for a section taste of New Vegas. But this time I’m going to try and put my lawful goodness on the shelf and explore the dark side of the Mojave.
I’ve tried that, but the game sort of forces you to make nice with the NCR. Not completely, but if you, say, help the Powder Gangers against the NCR raid on the prison, for instance, and become Vilified with the NCR, the game makes it annoying for you in certain ways that aren’t equivalent to what happens if, say, you piss off the Legion. And there are a lot more NCR-affiliated places and people that a bad NCR rep affects than there are any other faction affiliates, so again, the game sort of pushes you towards to being at least neutral with the NCR.
Of course, once you get to the Strip you get your one-time forgiveness, but still, I wish the game was more equitable in its morality filters.
They made a game called “Fallout” set in Nevada, and still no DLC about the test site?
And by section I meant second, of course. What the hell, me?

A test site area is in the main game. Besides, Fallout is an alternate history, so they don’t have to be exactly historical (after 1945 or so, anyway).
Jumped back into this to pick up where i left off about 6 months ago.
One thing that struck me (and probably contributed to me walking away from it for a while) is the number of f**kin load screens. Ridiculous.
For a game that relies on a certain level immersion to be conveyed on the player the amount of times you end up looking at a load screen really detaches you. I actually avoid Vegas where possible since it seems to take about 3 loading windows before you get to your destination.
The game shines when you just enjoy wandering around the wasteland, urban areas though are just a pain.
A solution to this would be allowing the player to fast travel out of a building etc.
Takes from what is otherwise a decent game.
edit: oh also, hello! :)
Yeah, doing the quests on the Strip is a pain in the ass due to all the zoning you have to endure. I had been trying to finish this up but have been side tracked by Brink and trying to finish up the Witcher and soon The Witcher 2.
Went back this weekend too. Started over with some damn spiffy mods in place and loving exploring the wasteland all over again. Already things are going different this time.
Mods I am using:
-
Nevada Skies. If you have the computer for it, you should be using this mod.
- Both Bounties mods, though I have started them yet.
- Weapons Mods Expanded. The guy that mod system in New Vegas is based on added more to the system. A LOT more.
- Nordic Weapons. Some good looking stuff here, but mainly only available later in the game, so I have not seen it yet.
- Warzone. Sounds really cool in theory, but have not really seen much different yet. Nor do I have any idea where they put the new cities.
- Civil Defense Radio. Wow. Actual PSAs (22m of them), 2h 20m of real songs from that era. Some of this is really freaky shit. Just in terms of how silly and old timey the songs sound, but the seriousness of the shit they deal with is highly interesting.
- Floral updates. Not 100% sold on this one, but it does change the landscape a bit with decent textures.
- Underground Hideout. Not sold on this one either, but interesting. Far too hard to get my shit back once it gets organized on the shelves, but not disabling it yet.
The two I bolded are the ones everyone should be using. The atmosphere created by Nevada Skies really enhances the game a lot. Careful with the end of days setting. You will literally walk around all day in a red/orange glow with the sky on FIRE.
On a side note, last time I played I never saw any glowing star caps, but this time, I picked one up. And then someone came up to me and said they were following me and be careful collecting those. Then some guy came running up after being a firefight with a lady and was all, “Man, we travelled together fine, but when she learned I had a necklace of Glowie Star Things, she tried to kill. That bitch is crazy, right?”
Me being highly interested in this quest and being somewhat surprised by the whole thing, I expressed he should give me the necklace for safe keeping…or else. So I killed that guy, took his stars, and looted the lady he killed. Now I have 10 or so of them. Fun quest so far. Really love quests that come looking for me, but do not force me to do them in particular way.
Really glad I started back up again. ;)
edit: Anyone got any other mods I absolutely should be using?
I love Electro-City. And the two New Vegas Bounties mods.
And any mod with 4096x4096 vulva normal maps.
I should try Electro City again. I tried it earlier, but I just ended up with a bunch of red exclamation points everywhere, so I disabled it and moved on. Probably just need to get a missing file or something…
You guys should also check out Monster Mod, which greatly enhances the variety of creatures in the game, and A World of Pain, which, well, just read the description:
Adds 95 intense locations to the wasteland filled with enemies and loot. They vary from small Gas Stations to huge maze-like sewers and derelict factories. Adds several days of new gameplay possibilities. A massive new linked Underground complex awaits filled with quests, NPCs with dialogue, vendors and some of the toughest enemies you will encounter anywhere in the game. Also adds many modified weapons, armors and items to the game with enhanced stats to help and hinder you throughout.
I’m currently replaying on the PC, and there are definitely a lot more creature types – and I haven’t even reached Novac yet. I can’t vouch for AWOP, but it’s highly regarded by the New Vegas Nexus community, and I’ve already encountered one major dungeon entrance, and an annex of Primm that I don’t recall existing before.
Monster Mod has its own mini add-on that links it to AWOP, so that all the underground AWOP locations are populated by Monster Mod’s creature selection.
Edit: Monster Mod also allows respawn in “encounter zones,” like those Vaults that you clean out (minus unique quest-specific spawns)
Can you disable respawns? That is why I did not try Monster Mod honestly. I do not like random respawns in places I have already been…

This is pretty cool if you have some spare time to look through it all. It may be a teensy bit spoiler-y if you haven’t seen most of the sights in the game already.

I recently played through the two New Vegas Bounties mods and those are both quite good. Other then that, I haven’t tried to many others, mainly because I don’t feel the need for more weapons (though you get a few in the Bounties mods). I’m still trying different guns from the vanilla game. Today I discoverd that the Riot Shotgun is pretty devastating - about the best gun vs. Deathclaws I’ve seen, better then the Anti-Material rifle IMHO.
Speaking of guns, I hope I can find a good new rifle/carbine soon. I’ve been using the Cowboy Repeater for a long time now. I got bored exloring the southern map with it so I’m beelining to New Vegas now. Maybe I’ll find something there. I hope level 15 is a good time to go.

The special All American version of the Marksman Carbine is pretty good. The only downside it that its semi-auto, but the scope is as good as a sniper rifle’s.

You didn’t kill the first guy that came up to you? A shame. He had good stuff on him, like 6 of those caps plus an awesome hat and trenchcoat combination that give +10 to Barter (Roving Trader outfit).
Trail Carbine from the Gun Runners is a pretty good weapon, as is The Ferguson Rifle from the Bounties mod (the first one). The Assault Carbine (5mm) is awesome if expensive, and The Machine, from McCarran quests, is great at .308.

On my last play through I went from the repeater to a brush gun and carried that through to the end. That and a ranger sequoia.
Ammo was a pain to find though.
