I bought this during the Steam sale, and I’m enjoying it a lot more than Fallout 3. From what I’ve seen so far, they’re making much better use of the fallout lore than the earlier game, and the quests seem quite a bit better, too. I also really like the addition of companions, and their questlines.

I’m almost regretting that I didn’t buy it sooner, although it’s not as if I’ve been short on games to play.

Just had the weirdest experience in the Zion dlc. I had played the beginning of it a week ago, and picking it back up had a quest to go find the foozle. So I trot off in the direction of the foozle on the map, shoot anything that attacks me, pick up the foozle… and uh, that’s it. I can now leave Zion and get the end of game slideshow on my ‘choices’. But I didn’t make any choices! Nothing happened! I walked up to the mark on the map and picked up the thing! What did I fail to do? This dlc is not justifying the $2.50 it cost me.

For better or worse the DLC supports you shooting a friendly very near the start, and when you do that you automatically fail all the quests and there is not much to do.

When you first enter the area you will be ambushed by some guys nearby. After you kill them you will move forward. Across a bridge you will see some guys - don’t do anything! One will kill the other and then you can approach the survivor and the game will progress as intended.

That would be it then! Thanks.

New traits from the new dlc:

Early Riser!
Hey early risers! Enjoy a +2 to each of your S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attributes from 6 am to 12 pm, but suffer a -1 from 6 pm to 6 am when you’re not at your best.

Hoarding Problem
You gain +25 lbs. to your carrying capacity, but suffer a -1 to all attributes any time the weight you’re carrying drops below 160 lbs.

Hot Blooded
When your health drops below 50% you gain +10% more damage, but you also suffer -2 to your Agility and Perception attributes.

Logan’s Loophole
No one’s going to put you out to pasture 'cause you’re going to stay young (and level 30) forever! You’ll never again become addicted to chems, and they’ll last twice as long… but after 30 you can kiss experience, perks, and skill points goodbye!

Skilled
You’re skilled, but not experienced. You gain +5 points to every skill, but you suffer -10% from experience gained from now on.

Claustrophobia
You have a fear of enclosed spaces (probably because of the mutants that live there). You gain +1 to S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attributes when outside, but suffer -1 when indoors.

Hah hah, hoarding problem is so for me.

Are those traits (selectable at character generation) and not perks (on level-up)?

Yeah, everything about New Vegas feels so much more natural than Fallout 3. I’ve clocked about fourteen hours into the game so far and still feel nowhere near New Vegas itself.

Boone’s quest in Novac was particularly astounding.

The story is good for that quest. The ending is a bit silly.

I think I preferred New Vegas as well, but FO3 was so long ago that I just can’t remember :)

Skilled is going to be an instant pick for me every single time. +5 to all skills, and slows down leveling? Tell me what the drawback to that perk is again?

Yeah that’s sort of what I’m thinking. Leveling seems like it’s at a pretty brisk pace already.

I also bought this (and the two DLC packs released thus far) during the Steam sale and just started playing yesterday. I’m level 4 and finished the starting town quest and cleared the Powder Gangers in Primm. I also repaired the Eyebot and now have an NPC companion. Otherwise, I haven’t really done anything or explored anywhere.

Without reading all 4000+ posts in this thread, are the any useful tips I should know? In Fallout 3, I played a stealth+small arms build, and I’m trying for something similar in New Vegas. Is this viable for the entire game, or would I be better off with a different style?

Also, are there any must-have addons I should install?

Firearms is almost a must-have skill for either game. I’m sure someone out there has made it work, but playing on Very Hard at least, I found that I needed to prioritize that skill.

For me, the most notable difference in how the new rules affect builds is that several dialog choices involve skill level checks. The starting quest introduces you to the idea that not only does Speech count for dialog, but so do skills like Barter and Medicine. Speech is still the most common, and there are things you can’t really do any other way.

Stealth plays pretty much the way it did in FO3, though you don’t have the game-breaking permanent stealth field with Chinese Stealth Armor. Stealth Boys are still around.

I played the game through a couple of times without any mods, and didn’t feel the lack.

I’m assuming I’ll get a player house with a bed and storage locker at some point. How long until that happens? I’m already finding I’m a bit overburdened and have to sell or drop things I’d otherwise like to keep. Is there a particular quest I should prioritize to unlock the player house early?

There are several places that act as “houses” actually. I want to say Novac is the first one (after Good Springs) but you can find buildings that have chests which act as storage (and don’t delete your items after some time):

Goodsprings (the town you start in) has a house you can use right away. Easy Pete will share it with you.

The best early house is the Dino motel room in Novac. Talk to the old Crawford woman to get the key.

I used the Wiki to beeline (within reason) to the Novac house and it still probably took me over 10 hours from the start. Just sell stuff until then. Like Fallout 3, you’ll find plenty more crap.

Or listen to Telefrog. I didn’t notice the one in Goodsprings.

Showing your age…I had that album…:)

I never found the one in Goodsprings either and basically used the Novac one for 90% of the game.

The one mod I’ve installed was a small tent outside of Goodsprings. Just has workbenches, a sleeping bag and various storage containers. Plus it’s near the fresh water well, so I can top off whenever I stop by (playing hardcore mode).

Are there bobbleheads in this game (or another item with the equivalent effect)? I didn’t put more than 9 points into any of my SPECIAL attributes assuming I’d get a bobblehead later for the tenth point, but is that actually the case?
