Well that just doesn’t even make sense. Obviously Skyrim = New Vegas without guns and with dragons.

For a pure melee character, what would you recommend? Armor wise I mean?

My last playthrough was a cowboy type; I finished the game with NCR armor. But as a shooter I could take advantage of cover and the like in a way I simply can’t when I’m wading in with my hammer / shishkebab / etc. I feel like I need more DT against certain stuff.

Also can someone explain to me in simple terms how the armor stats work? Like say I want a Deathclaw to not two shot me, how do I handle that?

So can we expect the next Fallout game to have the visual panache of Skyrim?

You can’t. Even with the maximum possible Damage Threshold and Damage Resistance (-50/85% or so with drugs, maybe), the deathclaw is going to vaporize you, because each hit does something like 125/hit, and they really hit fast. I found the way to kill them was with long-distance explosives, or lots and lots of Turbo.

I tried playing a psychopath for a few hours tonight. Guns, repair, and survival, shoot everyone as soon as you see them, and take all the carrying capacity perks.

It’s great fun, but it’s still attached to the goddamn garbage-collecting crafting system. I gave up a few hours in because I was tired of it.

If you’re relying solely on DT and DR to get you through melee you’re going to have a tough time of it. Melee is more about making sure your opponent can’t hit you back while you beat them to death. The melee perk that knocks down your opponents is critical, for instance.

With that in mind, deathclaws are absolutely possible to melee. I would use a super sledge against them for the extra knockback chance and it wasn’t even a contest; the first hit would usually put them down and then I basically stunlocked them to death. I could usually take on two at a time without help; with a partner I was able to handle up to four at a time by running from one to the next and repeatedly knocking down each in turn.

So, this is the first RPG that I’ve ever played on the xbox 360 that was also available for the PC.

Wasn’t expecting to like it, but really really enjoyed the 52 hours I spent on it(even with plenty of caveats).

However, after only having 2 or 3 crashes in the first 25 hours, it’s now down to a crash/freeze/lockup every 25 minutes or so, the quests are getting buggier and buggier(I can’t complete Veronica’s quest and I somehow skipped a few parts of Mr House’s by going to talk to Caesar) and I can’t even approach Black Mountain without the game locking up(a known bug apparently) so I have to say good bye without finishing it.

As I said, really enjoyed it.

But.

Fuck you Obsidian for yet again creating a bug ridden mess. Seriously, the main guys there have been doing this since the fucking early 90’s and still can’t make a game that they can patch into a properly playable state.

This is not a common experience with New Vegas. I don’t know that I’ve ever had the game crash on me, let alone every 25 minutes or so. My immediate guess would be memory issues, as in it wants more memory than you have, and isn’t being graceful about it when it doesn’t get it.

DSIII says hi.

It is a fairly common experience with New Vegas on the 360, at least according to all the hits I was getting searching for solutions. Also, the lockups/crashes that only happened at specific places(Hi loading Gibson’s Shack unless I told Veronica to wait outside & the aforementioned Black Mountain lockup) are widely mentioned, including on the fallout wiki as are all the quest bugs/issues that I ran into. Still never fixed though!

This is the game with the Cowboy Hat that broke your game if you looted it right?

PS: Game installed to HDD(not that that should make a difference) and was patched via XBL.

Do grab the shader mod though, makes things much prettier.

So - is NV not playable on my 360 due to unfixed bugs?

I wouldn’t say that. I played through NV complete plus all doc on my 360.

I think its more a case of luck and YMMV. Unfortunately I ran out of luck towards the end of the game.

Having acquired all DLC (except for Dead Money) thanks to the recent Steam sale, I’m playing this game again. But I don’t want to play through the main path (did all the possible variations previously), just want to experience the new DLC content. So I’m wondering, what is the minimum level my (Guns-based) character needs to be for Honest Hearts, Lonesome Road and Old World Blues?

I realize there are in-game recommendations, but I’m wondering what’s the minimum level for someone familiar with all the overpowered game mechanics (which I am willing to exploit if it’ll get me to play the DLC sooner)? I don’t care if the DLC will be very hard, as long as it’s not completely impossible.

Any advice from those who played these?

Do not play Dead Money unmodded. It’s fucking awful. My mod pack includes things that disable the sucky parts and make it tolerable/sort of fun.

If you don’t want to pick up the entire mod pack, here’s the three:

Dead Money - No Collar Explosion.

Dead Money - Essential Companions.

Dead Money - No Collar and Cloud Messages.

I played all the DLCs from a save point in my original playthrough, so I didn’t experience them at lower levels. That said, from what I’ve read of others experiences it depends on the DLC. Honest Hearts is not that hard but the start point on the original map is on the other side of Vegas and so you have to at least be able to get to that area. Old World Blues is pretty challenging, at least at first and depending on you skills, so most seem to think the recommended level for that is appropriate. And Lonesome Road is also challenging and probably shouldn’t be approached until later in the game as well.

In short, Honest Hearts you can try when you get to the start area but the others are more geared towards something like level 15 or beyond.

Silly question - is there any ‘must have’ mod that is NOT included in Jason’s omgwtfbbq pack? His pack is so extensive that I can’t imagine, but may as well ask…

I’m normally not interested in mods which make New Vegas easier, but I think I’d install this one before I played Dead Money again. The constant poison damage doesn’t add anything to the game. The collars theoretically are a significant party of the expansion, but in practice they’re often placed in such obnoxious ways that I think you’re better off without them. If the radios were always placed so you could see them and shoot them, they might have been tolerable. There’s certainly plenty of challenge in Dead Money without them.

I didn’t even buy Dead Money, after the terrible feedback (your comments earlier in the thread included).

Thanks Sarkus. I’ll tackle them in that order (Heats, Blues, Road).
