I think they should embrace finally that the nuclear apocalypse happened lots of time ago, and a new civilization exist now. But of course Bethesda likes the “post apocalypse” lawless world idea because because it gives them a “logical” reason to have so many stuff to loot around, enemies roaming around. Even if the dates don’t make sense anymore.
If you would follow the timeline properly, the normal thing is new nations being founded and society reestablishing itself. No more raiders in the wasteland, etc

Obsidian sort of went that way. The NCR is effectively a nation and is slowly expanding East. Caesar’s Legion as well. Fallout2 was implying the foundations of civilization and the like and according to “lore” that was what? A hundred years ago or something silly like that?
I think Fallout3 just jumped the gun and threw off everything. They jumped so far for no real reason beyond inability to imagine anything of their own. I mean almost everything in Fallout3 is from Fallout2 magically teleported across a continent because they wanted to have it in DC.
Edit: Looked at the timeline and I guess its not that terrible. It does bug me when I find a can of beans thats 200 years old though. Or the worst offender: Fresh Apples in a Vault thats been sealed for 200 years.

I read some crazy walkthrough that was INSISTENT that the MOST IMPORTANT THING TO DO was to sneak close to vegas at level one just to get the intelligence upgrade at the medical center AS. SOON. AS. POSSIBLE.
Someone please tell me that guy was being a wanker and i should just play the game normally please. THANKS.
Yes, that’s just to maximize skill points over the life of the character. You’ll become overpowered even without it. It’s also not quite as simple as running to a location in Fallout 3 to find a bobblehead.

He’s a wanker. Play normally.
Edit: Not to mention you couldn’t remotely afford the thing at level one anyway. Its like 8k caps or something iirc.
Just play the game normally. I played for almost 40 hours before I even got to New Vegas.

Yeah, just play the game. Have fun and don’t stress out about min/max’ing your character.
I tried the “rush for IQ implant” once, and decided it wasn’t for me. It’s a lot more fun to play normally, and the handful of skill points you lose by getting to New Vegas at 6 or 8 isn’t that important. I think the tunnel vision on doing that comes from two aspects of FO3 that aren’t true of New Vegas: you can get the IQ bobble head without any real risk early, if you know where it is, and +1 IQ is 1 skill point per level, not 0.5 skill points.
I am rolling my eyes here. Yes, he is a wanker. Or at least a munchkin min-maxer. You will be overpowered by the end of the game without need to do that shit.
If you’re that desperate for the extra +1 to your IQ, use console commands to edit your stats and play normally.

Just started playing and did a sidequest that sent some dudes into space (I think that’s where they ended up). Damn that was fun and had me up late night. Funny thing is I burnt out on Skyrim halfway through, but have no problem playing the very similar New Vegas.

Yeah I have to admit, I appreciate and enjoy the Elder Scrolls games, but given a choice I’d go with Fallout.
I just did that. Surprisingly easy. I found winning the money (4k) to afford the implant the hardest part. And that’s with 9 luck. The only dicey part was (spoilers follow)
sneaking past the death claws at the quarry. There’s a stealth boy in the school house, so I just used that and reloaded a few times.

I’m worried about spoilers, and I’m sure this has been answered already, but I’ma ask anyway. I’m about to start his finally for the first time, and I’m playing on the PC, is there any DLC I should go ahead and pick up or avoid? I noticed some makes the beginning easier, so I don’t want that, and some takes place when the game is finished I guess, right? I could go ahead and grab that I suppose.
Also, I’m digging around mods and such, do the realism mods go too far? I like the idea of having to survive in the wasteland, paying attention to water, sleep, etc(not being able to cheese through tough areas by repeatedly sleeping for example), but I don’t want caps(and maybe ammo?) to take up all my weight necessarily either.
I hear such high praise about the story/RPG aspects of this one(I loved Bloodlines for the same reason), and so am really trying to go into this one cold and run with my decisions, usually I’m not so spoiler-averse. Thanks!
No full (quest) DLC takes place at the beginning of the game. You honestly won’t want to tackle the easiest of the DLCs until you’ve hit level 10, and the endgame stuff like Old World Blues is best tackled starting at level 20.The two goodies-pack do provide starting game benefits, I believe, however, so you might want to avoid those.
I’m of the opinion that “realism” mods are simply more busywork/paperwork tacked on to a game system that does not support them very well. Fallout 3 and FNV are not games built around scarcity, they are exactly the opposite, and attempting to impose “realism” on such a deep-seated design choice leads not to challenge but frustration.
Unlike Oblivion, which I loaded down with a bazillion mods, I ended up just using ten or so very carefully selected mods in FNV, most of which were just visual upgrades/changes and none that made sweeping changes across the board.
I might finally get around to starting this, having bought it during the summer steam sale. And essential mods I should download? The hardcore realism stuff sounds not fun at all.
Hmm, maybe I won’t. It feels too samey with Skyrim. I might need something totally different in between.

I’m assuming Jason’s massive FONV pack contains any ‘essential’ stuff (I’ve not taken the time to get into it… only to install it and let it sit. Sigh). There is of course a bazillion things out there on the fallout nexus site, so I’m thankful he took the time to do the legwork for us. :)

Anyone know if FNV has a performance mod like the TESV performance mod?

OK, once I finish Skyrim (LOLOLOLOL!!! oh, sorry…) I’m going to pick up Fallout:NV for the XBox. I finished Fallout 3 on my notebook and liked it a lot, but I’m really enjoying the sofa/54" Plasma Xbox experience (yeah, I know, and I’m gonna build a machine for the entertainment center, but that’s another thread.)
So, no mods, and with that in mind, for a console, what DLC should I get along with the base game, and is it best to install them from the beginning or wait until later in the game?
Thanks

I loved Fallout 3 but I am reluctant to purchase FONV due to the bugs… anyone know if the upcoming complete edition for Xbox is bug free?
JeffL, I am a console convert… I much prefer sitting on the couch playing games than upright at a desk… I switched 2 years ago (after 25 years? of upright PC gaming).
