DLC is always a terrible return for your dollar compared to buying the full game for $50, but it’s improved immeasurably since horse armor.

Anyway, the exclusive DLC deeply pisses me off. I despise these types of machinations. I just want to play the real game, the full game. Bastards.

No kidding. The later Fallout 3 DLC was pretty darned good.

My only complaint with all the Oblivion and Fallout 3 DLC is the way it all just magically appears in your quests. Boom! Suddenly, your long-lost uncle died and left you a castle in his will! Bzzzt! Suddenly, you can hear a distress call on a previously empty radio band!

DLC is like expansions, except better: It comes in smaller chunks so I can choose what content I want to pay for and what I don’t.

Yeah, but DLC as a concept was really new back then, some lessons were learned. Well, some. :)

Ha! The fact that I used that as an example at all probably shows how much attention I pay to the news. I wasn’t even aware of any Tylenol recalls this year.

Which is silly since Horse Armor never pretended to be anything but what it was. Pretty sure I read that Bethesda was surprised that so many folks bought it. I only have it because a bought a DLC compilation on disc.

They are like expansions, but worse: bang for buck, they are three times more expensive than the typical old expansion, if you are interested in all or almost all new content.

I got 3 out of the 4, didn’t bother with Zeta after the mediocre reviews. I thought Anchorage was a waste of time and money and inconsistent with FO3 universe. Point Lookout was ok. However who thought that creating a bunch of humanoid monster that basically ignored armor was a good idea should find a new line of work. That leaves Broken Steel which was to me exactly what a good DLC should do extend the story, raise the level cap, and add a bunch of perk. So for me I spent $30 for an additional dozen or so hours (I am a slow player) of new content in Broken Steel which was hardly worth the money IMO.

Hey for those that have played through a hunk is there any stat minimums I should watch out for in SPECIAL?

For example do you need a minimum strength to wear some of the armor etc.

Yeah, I was gonna say that PC gamers get some of the best DLC around for free, i.e., mods. I’m happy enough that Bethesda provides modding tools for the community. It’s a shame, but really, I’d feel I’d be missing out on much more on the XBox because there are no mods.

As someone who barely touched Fallout 3 and has New Vegas coming in the mail from Gamefly, could you all give me a brief rundown of what stats/perks are sort of a good baseline to start off with? I would prefer a build that specializes in assault rifles/energy long range weapons, things like that. I truthfully have no clue how to even go about min/maxing the stats!

Just to be the obligatory ‘ur doing it rong’ guy, I don’t think much min-maxing will be necessary to enjoy FO:NV. Make sure you have decent agility and perception, then take feats relevant to your weapons of choice.

It’s so disappointing this is a technical disaster like every Obsidian game. If they don’t fix it up I’m just not going to bother.

Even if it is, they always fix them up.

They… fix… everything…

Heh. I’m not trying to justify releasing a buggy mess, just pointing out that…eventually…their games are always playable. Like Troika, say, but without having to wait for fan patches.

To go back to the character build geekery, I’d like to know how the new skill points and feat economy works out so I can decide how to approach New Vegas. As mentioned, it was easy to max nearly everything in Fallout 3. It was efficient because I could try all the weapons, skills, and character builds in one playthrough. That let me see the entire world in one game. If that’s no longer the case, I might not worry about seeing every square inch of NV since I’ll be coming back to it.

On the other hand, I don’t know if I’d bother unless they made the mechanics more unique. I’m impressed with the people that roleplayed stealthy mad bombers and stuff because eventually the Bethesda games feel like I’m merely dealing linear damage with slightly different effects. I end up powergaming everything.

Asymmetrical traits might help.

Really? Because while I loved KotoR2, I don’t remember the ending ever being fixed…

Obsidian + Gamebryo = perfect storm. I kind of feel bad that Obsidian had to use Gamebryo, considering their technical mediocrity. That’s like starting a one-legged ass-kicking contest with your foot ankle deep in your own ass.

Yeah.

I bet many of them are playing pirated copies.

Hey Tom and other legit players, try installing to the 360 hard drive if you haven’t already. Let us know how it goes.
