My recollection is that FO3 was like that for a while until you started fighting more human enemies. For the first bit of FO3 I was fighting a lot of creatures, which didn’t help with ammo and stimpack resupplies. Once I started encountering raiders with some frequency, I was all set. So far in New Vegas I’m doing fine with supplies, including ammo, stimpacks (steal them from Doc Mitchell) and even replacement/repair weapons.

This is really cool too:

The GECK has been released already. Go modders go!

I started reading the instructions for Caravan on my Pip Boy and got to the part where card values are discussed and just gave up. I’m sure it’s not that complicated, but reading the somewhat lengthy rules was not what I really wanted to be doing in my shooty RPG, at least not in the first couple of hours.

So far I’ve sold all of the explosives I’ve found since my character has very little skill in that area. My plan is to come back when my guns have leveled up a bit and I have some better armor.

Yeah, this is what I thought as well. The special ammo is pretty expensive and sort of hard to come by (the Goodsprings vendor doesn’t have a large supply) so I’m skipping it for now. I’m sure at some point I’ll be able to afford some reasonable quantity of special ammo at all times. As of now, I’m not even sure how to change the ammo type I’m using.

Like I said earlier, I turned off steamcloud globally in the steam preferences and didn’t have any problems. You can also backup the savegame directory (documents\my games\falloutnv\savegames I think it is), but you need to do that before you start the game, as that’s when the bug hits.

Additionally, for quicker full saves, hit the ~ key and type “save savename”, then hit ~ again to return to the game. After that, whenever you want to save, you can hit ~, up arrow, enter, and ~ again.

But if you turn off steamcloud, I really don’t think you’ll have a problem.

Also people, not to be “that guy”, but this is not the spoiler thread. Please don’t talk about where to find ammo or specific areas in here. Just trying to avoid the inevitable flamewar.

Yeah, I’d hate to interrupt the extremely interesting discussion of bugs, freezing and crashing.

If anything on this last page is a spoiler, then I guess my understanding of the term is fundamentally different than yours. I’m not saying people should be giving story spoilers, but man, if we aren’t supposed to even discuss, in general terms, areas and encounters, then what exactly are we supposed to talk about?

A huge part of New Vegas is exploration, so it is understandable that people want to be surprised at what they find in the wasteland, even if it doesn’t impact the story.

I think that most substantive discussion of a plot-driven game post-release moves to the spoiler thread.

All right. I guess I’ll pop back in if I ever get the inkling to discuss the hilarious way I killed [NAME OF ENEMY EDITED OUT] with [NAME OF WEAPON EDITED OUT]. Too bad really, because I don’t want to go into the full on spoiler thread to discuss the game in general terms.

“Also I haven’t found a single permanent upgrade magazine/book for my skills and has anyone stumbled across any permanent stat upgrades?”

Answer is a spoiler.

Talking about specific encounters and strategies on how to beat them is obviously spoiler territory.

I’m trying to head off the flamewar. Please don’t ignite it.

Boring “me too” post: no crashes. A couple of temporary glitches that, as a veteran player of mods that take the Gamebryo engine and Oblivion scripting system waaaay beyond what they were meant to do, I expect and ignore. Only big framerate hit was when I had to fight a bunch of [enemies] while defending [location].

With that in mind, remember this, folks: Oblivion and its babies are extremely sensitive to system specs. For you PC users, are you SURE your machine is really up to the sliders you’ve set? I have a “decent” rig (i3, 8800GT, 4GB) and none of the sliders are cranked.

For you console folks like poor Tom here that are crashing all the time:

[nelson]HA HA[/nelson] You should know better…you’re honestly playing an Oblivion game on a console? You pay MORE for a version that the community won’t relentlessly mod and transform over the next couple of years? Who are you that flies so good – are you INSANE?

Put about 6 hours into the PC SKU. Playing on my 42" TV and 5.1 surround system using an Xbox controller. Everything set to max, and the engine runs smooth as butter. Almost zero load times as well. I went through FO3 on my 360, and found it to control very well… so this is like running the game on a super console. I had one crash bug, and have been frequently alt-tabbing out to backup my save game folder. Have never had any save games go missing yet, however. Good to know that backing them up will keep me OK if the bug does crop up.

Anyhow, I loved Fallout 3. And I’m finding that this is an even better game. The world, the characters, the quests… all of it is a notch better than FO3’s. Obsidian makes buggy messes, but they sure know how to tell a story in a great world. It feels much more like FO1 and 2.

One of my main systems beefs with FO3 was that it was just too damn easy. Even on my second playthrough on hard difficulty it was a cakewalk. The addition of “Hardcore” mode is just brilliant. I love having to constantly scrounge for food and water, limb damage requiring a doctor, stim packs not insta-healing, all ammo has weight, cooking various things at the campfire, trying to judge whether or not to eat my last pear or eat at gecko steak and eventually have to get radiation treatment. This perfectly fits the mood of the game, and adds immensely to the immersion of surviving in the wasteland.

I’m finding the combat to be still a bit too easy, and I’m playing on hard. It’s definitely more of a challenge than FO3, but it’s almost impossible to play without using VATS as the enemies are skirbing all over the place. I try to limit my VATS use as much as possible, but it’s difficult.

Also, I’m purposefully not taking any perks that enhance XP or skill growth, as I don’t want the challenging aspects of the game to become the boring cakewalk the FO3 turned into post level 12.

And I definitely turned on “Wacky Wasteland” or whatever it’s called, although I haven’t encountered anything “wacky” yet. Can’t wait to though.

Overall, I love it. It exceeded my expectations. The only thing I don’t like is that I’m definitely going to want the DLC for this, and I’ll most likely have to wait 6 months for it (is that how long it took FO3’s DLC to show up for the PC SKU?)

Your definition of a spoiler is much different than mine. I’m with MSUSteve on this one…it’s not like he’s giving away plot points.

I found a Small Guns book in the house with the guy who gives you the Red Racer pajamas (or I guess you could just take them if you kill him). The yellowish house is just down the street from the bobblehead factory.

SPOILER!

Some people want to be surprised by the flamewar.

Obviously we need a Kinda Spoilers thread that’s for people who want to talk about certain encounters and strategies and builds and the like, but don’t want to talk about major plot spoilers.

Saw this on another forum:

For multicore systems:

In fallout.ini
Find the line: bUseThreadedAI=0
change it to: bUseThreadedAI=1
Add another line after it and insert: iNumHWThreads=2

This made my game run so much smoother.

i5 750, 4gb ddr3, 4890

He also mentioned that the file is read-only, and you probably want to make the changes and switch the file back to read-only so the changes don’t get overwritten.

Haven’t tried it myself, but I will when I get home. However, like I said previously, performance has been smooth for my box so far.

I’m digging it too. It’s, well, more Fallout, and that was good!

I’m very interested in making my own bullets and modding my guns. That seems cool. I like the idea that lots more stuff found lying around will be useful for once, too!

Otherwise, it’s just more good game. Not spectacular, but good. The actor who did the first doc is great. Calm and thoughtful, used-sounding but not weary. He is very well played, and I had a lot of hope for the others. The Oblivion and F3 VO was so bad I had high hopes. But every person since has been flat and boring if not outright bad. Sunny Smiles sounds like a person off the street. Hasn’t got an ounce of character, some of which would be implied for someone with a name like that.

Or we could use a little common sense, realize that stusser is the only one complaining about a Chicken Little scenario that has yet to materialize, and just discuss the game in general terms without specific plot and encounter spoilers. But man, mentioning the name of a place on the map within spitting distance of the first town, or even the location of a stat boosting book just doesn’t seem like the sort of thing we have to worry about here. If anything, there should be a “Let’s Not Actually Discuss Fallout New Vegas” thread to appease stusser and whoever else simply wants to crab about the bugs, crashes and freezes.

The location of a permanent stat boost is a far bigger spoiler than any plot nonsense.

Shrug, I tried. Spoil away.
