Yeah there are some games like Resident Evil 4 that I just can’t get past their flaws. Then there are games like Far Cry 2 where the flaws are probably just as egregious but grab me and won’t let go.

Yeah, nothing held Brazil together, it collapses under the weight of its main character’s farcical nature.

I just realised that the roadsigns direct you to your target! So you don’t need to drive with the map on your lap, just make sure you’re headed vaguely right then follow the red or blue signs.

I wish the GPS thing wouldn’t rotate, it’s hard to find north on it. The way I travel (IRL and in video games) is always to have a map pointing north, and then travel a cardinal direction to my target. It’s a minor quibble, but it’d help me navigate without having to have the map open.
PS: I love this game.
I love this game, too. I originally hated the respawning but now I’ve relaxed and gotten into the groove of the game, and love it.
I’ve encountered a few diamonds I simply can’t get to (on top of a large boulder or side of a tall cliff). Anyone have any tips on how to reach these?
For those, you generally need either a truck to climb up on, or more likely need to find a hang glider and fly to them.

I’ve packed this in for the moment, having just opened up the southern map. It’s odd. I mean, I like it - I really like it - but I find it hard to motivate myself to play it, probably because there’s not actually that much to do in it and the narrative itself isn’t really strong enough to propel you forward in the game. I mean, it feels like you’re doing these disjointed missions and occasionally the designers are going ‘better do something with the Jackal here’ but other than that the missions could be completely random and there’s nothing that really differentiates side missions from the narrative missions. They can be boiled down to ‘go here, kill/destroy/collect him/this’ without much reduction.
Which brings me to: I actually like the idea that the missions are (sort of) random and I can see myself dipping into it every now and then to do one when I want some running and gunning in a nice setting.
dermot: Yep, it’s definitely a game where I took my time. It took me months to finish. I got all the diamonds, did all the side missions, and got to see everything the game had to offer. It’s not a “play through the linear story quickly” type of game. Especially once you switch the music off and just enjoy the savannah and jungles and rivers with their natural sounds, the game becomes an escape to a different world more than anything else. I would recommend that you explore a little more of the Southern map by the way. Things are about to get a LOT more exciting. Enemies are much better equipped now, and your dynamically generated stories about what happened to you the other day in Far Cry 2 are about to get a lot more exciting.
Oh shit yeah, the Southern Map is just crazy good. Keep going, dermot! :)

Agreed. Also, when there are mysterious explosions around you, it is most likely not a scripted event. There is some jackass sitting somewhere lobbing those mortars at you. Find him and shoot him DEAD.
Then take his mortar and blow something up. ^_^
I can’t find the guy by the lake. Anybody know where that fucker is?

So what’s the best machine gun to be shooting for? I have my sights on the AR15 so I’m doing weapon missions to work towards that.
Anyone have any good suggested weapon loadouts?

I found machine pistol, sniper rifle, and RPG to be a combo that would see me through any situation. Also for a while I experimented with an alternate loadout of silent MP5, dart rifle, and grenade launcher, for a kit that was absolutely silent except when it was absolutely not. In general, I found having a rapid-fire weapon for close quarters and a scoped weapon for starting (and often finishing) engagements to be absolutely crucial, then some explosives round it out nicely.
I’m being a bit non-specific because which weapon you use in a given category depends on personal style preference. I found the M1903 very satisfying, but being able to fire multiple shots without reloading is useful as well. You’ll get enough diamonds to buy everything by the end, so I wouldn’t worry too much about wasting money on something you don’t use.

Ahh ok. So is stealthy gameplay viable? I’m considering going the stealth weapon route and getting camo.

Actually dropping guys without anyone sounding the alert is very difficult, but you can certainly keep them unaware of your position if you keep moving and only use silenced weapons. I’d say stealth is semi-feasible, but really only at night.
I never got good at stealth, but from everything I’ve read you have to perform it at night and have a lot of cover for it to be effective. Vegetation, primarily. Please report back on what works and doesn’t, as I’d love to be able to use it effectively.

Well I probably won’t go that route. This game looks like ass during nighttime. I think my gamma settings may be a little screwed up (desktop looks great with pictures), but nighttime just looks really washed out the contrasting edges of shallow changes of darkness are kinda annoying. It’s a shame since car headlights look so cool.
The reason the stealth approach doesn’t work is that every time you kill someone, no matter which weapon you use, they yell out alerting all their buddies that something is amiss. I think someone mentioned in this thread that there at least needed to be a throat cutting option with the machete, which as gruesome as it sounds would have added another layer to the gameplay.

Not true. Silenced pistol directly to the head will drop someone without a cry out.
