Yeah, pretty much the beauty of this game is being able to pick up this game after months of not touching it and not feeling lost. As such, respawning points don’t worry me. Plus, like Rock8man said, don’t double back, go on a different escape route. There is some amazing enviroments out there, gotta go see them.
Has anybody found a weapon damage mod for this yet? I would’ve played it more if the guns had some oomph.

Something weird happened to me with this game - I picked it up 2 or 3 times and played it for a week or so (and had a great time) as described, but after one more try I just hated it - I found it unplayable. I don’t think I have ever played a game that was so literally love it or hate it as Far Cry 2.
Is it sad that, after playing Far Cry 2 for 20-30 minutes, I no longer feel any motivation to play further?
Yes. A million times yes.

Give it a few hours. My feelings about Far Cry 2 oscillated a bit before I eventually fell in love with it. For the first hour or so I thought it was ok, but then my buddy died and for the next couple hours I hated the game. But then I started roaming around, not worrying so much about going from mission to mission to gun mission to pills mission etc., and the game clicked. It’s still my favorite game that came out that year.
Alright, I’ll keep at it, it just feels so blah…
Did you turn off the music Brian? If you haven’t, make sure to play with the music off. I don’t say that about any other game, but in Far Cry 2, the audio with the music off is divine.
It’s a little blah until you get out of the tutorial phase (it’ll tell you when the tutorial is over). After that, it’s sublime.

I have to agree. Hearing the sounds of a grenade exploding near by, the booming sound rolling across the land is just amazing. I found it best to just go through a few missions at a time when playing.
However, I played the game first as a roaming adventure style game over a first person shooter. Sometimes it just isn’t worth shooting those guys in the distance. What would it achieve anyway? They’ll just be back.

It’s fun until you find a bugged door that won’t open, even when necessary for the storyline :P
I ended up shelving it. I would have preferred something that was more of a world sim with exploration wasn’t just finding the occasional hidden gem. The checkpoints were also a frustration. Those constant battles became tedious, doubly so because they were unavoidable. I felt like I was grinding my way through some MMORPG time sink.

I have sunk tons of hours into Far Cry 2 but I only have a vague idea what the whole story is about. I don’t think I’ve saved a game in months and months because I don’t care. Some guys don’t like some other guys, and really it doesn’t matter at all because the important thing is there’s this big world full of explosions and gunfights just waiting to happen. You’re the author of this sublimely emergent tale of destruction, do with it what you will.
Dude, the Jackal! How can you not know about the Jackal? He’s this, uh, guy. Who’s doing some kind of stuff. I’m pretty sure he’s the bad guy. Wait, you might be trying to rescue him. No, no, with a name like the Jackal, I’m pretty sure he’s the bad guy. Or your partner. Maybe former partner. He might have gone rogue. He might be your former partner gone rogue. Who you’re trying to rescue. Or the bad guy. He’s one of those two things.
But, yeah, the Jackal!

Shit, if the story is that deep I might have to get back into it!
How to enjoy Far Cry 2:
Turn off the sound.
Go at your own pace.
Get a sniper rifle and a flamethrower and create a living hell for your enemies.
Actually, the buddy stories can be pretty cool. I played through the game twice and liked the subtle way it shifted some of the story missions based on who I picked as my bestest buddy. Nothing major like Alpha Protocol, but a few discreet twists.
But Joe M. is right about the overall arc. It’s less a kill the foozle thing than it’s about how you’re situated in an utterly fucked war-torn country.
God, I should have played this again instead of Crackdown 2…

Alright guys, I’ll give it a little more time, but so far it’s not clicking at all. I trust y’all, though, so I’ll keep trudging along a little more.
And turn off the music, right? Don’t forget about that part. I know it sounds idiotic, (it did to me) but it isn’t!
I promise I’ll turn off the music. crosses heart :)
