What do we know about the dev team? Lack of Hocking puts it a bit back on my list, but the IP is still attractive, especially if there’s carryover from 2.

So I finally popped this into my 360 to give it a go over the weekend (well, the 1 hour window I had on Sunday, anyway). I think I’m hooked.

I stole a vehicle during one of the preliminary missions. I drove through a checkpoint which caused all hell to break loose. I defended myself successfully, stole the soldiers vehicle (with the gun on top), and defended against some other guys who were coming from somewhere else. My original vehicle was in the crossfire and took enough damage to burst into flames and explode. This set the field of grass it was sitting in on fire and it spread out to consume most of the area.

I was still being shot at though. So I doubled back to the checkpoint and was able to flank a lone sniper who was still there, looking for me. I walked up behind him and when he realized I was there, he spun around and I put one in his head. I then took his rifle and capped some random dude who decided to head my way and get uppity.

At that point, I knew I was fucked. I’m going to be in this world for awhile…

I know what you are saying Warren and I liked the the game well enough, but let’s see how much you enjoy those check points when you have to repeat what you did there every 15 mins of gameplay.

I’ve read the comments about the checkpoints and I’ve also read ones where people would simply bypass them when they became tiresome. I’m interested to see how it plays out for me.

Have fun with it. Those moments like you described are certainly the high point of Far Cry 2. The lowpoint is the repetitiveness of always having to clear the same checkpoint fights, spending lots of time trudging around to get to objectives, and always worrying about jamming guns and limited ammo.

The most important thing with FC2 is to take your time with unlocking the unlockables. I think I have played the game wrong and had all the unlockable weapons unlocked a couple of hours into the second part of the map and that killed the game for me unfortunatelly. Checkpoints did not help to built up immersion with the gameworld either, for example the first time you notice mighty angel foes falling from heaven.

D+

Mighty angel foes falling from heaven? Are you talking about Far Cry 2? Usually the foes start out by smoking a cigarette or cleaning their gun.

Noticing them is about probability I assume. The spawn mechanic means foes falling from the sky.

BTW once a Chluckin’ Bell sales girl fell from the heavens as well. I can forgive such immersion breaking things in open world games though, so there is that.

I would give the opposite advice. Get the different weapons unlocked as soon as you can, and then change your loadout every time you pass by a weapon shop.

You’re either on some really good shit or in the wrong thread. In more ways than one.

Agreed. The weapon feel in Far Cry 2 is so excellent that you really want to try out every combo of main gun, pistol (ha!) and backup weapon.

What uhh… what the hell is the D+ for?

There’s a flaw in this advice roBurky. If people keep trying out different weapons and different ways to play the game, and therefore different ways to fight through the checkpoints, then how will they be able to complain about the repetitive gameplay?

I… I think it’s something the new kids are doing nowadays. They spin a dial of letters and pick the one that it’s come up with, then choose an arbitrary letter to put on the end.

It’s something to do with status, I think.

Each to his own. I neither found the weapons nor fighting mechanics satisfying enough to keep me occupied, left in a game world without additional things to unlock.

~55% or a 7/10 according to the established modern systems.

Go diamond hunting, it reveals the best part of FC2: the world.

Do the repair upgrades really just make you repair faster? Because that seems like a total waste of diamonds.

Also, my take on this game is that it is like Mirror’s Edge, in that it is an interesting experience but not really a good game. Well worth $20-30 bucks for that unique experience, though.

I can still manage. I actually like FC2, but the setting and engine have potential to be so much more than just shooting everyone.

If you use the gun-mounted jeeps (I don’t know what they’re called, sorry) as if they were a weapon in your loadout, then the repair upgrade is quite useful.

Vehicles felt too disposable to me to bother with the upgrades until I already had all the weapons I wanted, and even a few I didn’t.
