Exactly. There is no shortage of assholes in jeeps that are willing to deliver you exactly the type of mounted weapon you need, provided you are capable of killing them without nuking the vehicle with grenades or RPGs.

That’s pretty damn harsh, I think.

Which further begs the question, what do you need with a mounted weapon when you’ve got grenades and RPGs?

Jeeps later on come with a 'nade launcher. It’s gratifying, and being able to repair it in ~1.5 seconds (from about 4-5 default) is rather nice.

But yeah, I only bought that perk once I had all the weapons I wanted.

Goddamnit that is making me want to play through this game again so bad.

Wait, what? Repair upgrade? My memory is shit, and it’s been almost 2 years since playing the game, but what is the repair upgrade?

Tell me more about these added vehicles and bonus weapons.

One of the things you can buy is an upgrade to how fast you repair cars, i.e. how long the wrench animation plays before the car is in 100% condition. You start out with it taking 5-6 seconds, and with the perk it takes 1-2. It may not sound like much written down, but in the heat of action it’s a HUGE bonus.

The added stuff came from the “DLC”. I think it costs money on consoles, but is free on Steam for some reason. It adds an ATV, a truck and … something else that I forget. The weapons are an explosive crossbow, a suppressed shotgun and … again something else that I forget :P The weapons are available right away, which reduces the early agony of having utterly shit weapons by quite a bit.

The other weapon’s an ornate looking sawed off shotgun that can go in your pistol category.

I really liked the DLC bonus items. The explosive crossbow is a real nice treat when first starting out. The silenced shotgun is kind of meh unless you’re at point blank range and the sawed off shotty is fun, but there are better choices. The ATV is fun to tool around in and I liked having the big trucks with the heavy caliber mounted guns in the first north zone rather than having to wait for the south.

All in all I felt FC2 was an amazing game and its one of the games I leave installed so I can jump back in when I need some of that style gameplay.

Yep, I know. The first couple of hours felt more like a solid B but then the game drifted away from me, the checkpoints and the unworldly spawns started to really annoy me. The weaponry was nothing special either, having unlocked the grenade launcher made it too easy, the mortar didn’t work proberly/ made no sense respectively, the world empty except for some unnecessary diamonds in the woods, AI nothing special, etc, etc.

I fucking loved the flame thrower and the fire mechanics however (eventhough they were of limited tactical value).

Even if you didn’t enjoy the game it merits a top percentile rank on technology and environment alone.

No, really not. This is still a game and not some sort of technology demo. I also didn’t quite get all that environmental love for FC2 as the wonderful world was empty and dull, only occupied by diamonds, a couple of animals and stupid, endlessly respawning, brain-dead enemies.

I get people enjoying the game, but for me it just didn’t click. Better: it clicked but then unclicked relatively fast.

Well your opinion is in the minority which is why, I suspect, no one is going to expend any energy debating you. I would suggest getting a room with wumpus, however.

Well, sure - but as you go on to say, you get people enjoying the game. People had fun playing it. It doesn’t particularly click for me, but I get that Psycho isn’t a shit movie.

Nor, for all its faults, is Far Cry 2 a shit game.

Yes, i felt much the same way but people on these boards are in love with open world games at the moment so they can do no wrong no matter what. Far cry 2 had significantly worse environments than the first one and was much more repetitive (respawning generic checkpoint? respawning generic car spawning from behind? respawning generic patrol?). This is a situation i have coined as “Copypasta Level Design.”

I don’t think far cry 2 is a shit game exactly, but it is massively overrated and doesn’t really do anything particularly special. It is also not a worthy sequel to the first game, being worse in every way. Pure fan service for open world addicts.

Whoa, so you’re grudgingly allowing that there’s room for games that do things a little differently? That’s very gracious of you.

I have considerable complaints about the game, but it absolutely does do a something (or two) particularly special. If it didn’t, I really wouldn’t give a shit about its shortcomings.

Accepting that it is flawed, even greatly flawed, is exclusive to panning it, and denouncing it as worse in every way (really? every way?) strikes me as an overreach because you really didn’t like it and lots of people really did.

It was an incredible game system, however one ultimately came away from the mechanics.

It isn’t so much that it is flawed (although i’d consider the repetitive nature of the game world a flaw personally) so much as that it is bland. It is almost like playing world of warcraft on a server by yourself without any quests, cutscenes or story elements.

And i admit it isn’t worse in every way, there is a larger game world. That is true even if far cry also had a large one and had more options in it because the developers gave it a personal touch beyond ctrl C & ctrl V. Being worse in every way doesn’t mean it is a terrible game, it just means that it isn’t as good as the previous one.

almost like playing world of warcraft on a server by yourself without any quests, cutscenes or story elements.
… and one of the best combat systems ever.

I’d play that game in an instant. Where do I sign up?

You think farcry 2 has one of the best combat systems ever in a first person shooter?

Yep.5
