Favorite Game Music

Nice thread - I’ve always loved the music to the old Psygnoisis games, especially Agony- such great music. Didn’t someone copy that or tried to publish it as a rock song somewhere?

Yeah, I’m going to pretend I didn’t just read that nonsense.

Actually, I meant to ask above–is there a legit source for downloading the OST for the 2008 PoP reboot? I poked around a bit but my Google-fu is weak.

I suppose I could just check the game directory and see if it’s in mp3 or ogg files. Or do like the kids do now and just go to YouTube every time I want to hear it.

According to game-ost.com, there was a soundtrack CD that was included in some Japanese Xbox 360 version of the game. I don’t think you can get it easily, or at all.

My favorites in terms of game music (in no partiocular order):

[ul][li]Age of Wonders 1 - the entirety of the track is excellent but of these, Battle Macabre and Heartwood Forest are some of the best[/li][li]Dragon Age: Origins[/li][li]The Witcher[/li][li]Wing Commander 1 - particularly the briefing & launch tune[/li][li]Ultima V[/li][li]Heroes of Might and Magic 2-3, particularly HoMM2 town specific scores[/li][li]Thief[/li][li]Conquest of Elysium 3[/ul][/li]
The Morrowind theme is also excellent, though I never did play that game a lot and have not heard it too often.

Wow, that Red Dead Revolver Theme really is very similar to Kill Bill. I just looked up the release dates, and Red Dead Revolver came out 6-7 months after Kill Bill Vol 1, so it is possible that’s what they were influenced by. But I think it’s more likely that they were both inspired by similar older Western soundtracks.

G Police and Colony Wars had fantastic soundtracks.

Good necro. Any chance @wumpus we could merge this with the one I just started?

I am not a mod here ask @telefrog or @stusser

Sorry. @telefrog or @stusser is there any chance this thread could be merged with the ‘Videogame Music’ thread I started yesterday?

As far as my searches can tell, Qt3 doesn’t have an omnibus game music thread. This makes me sad.

So I would like to inaugurate one with a couple of links.

Here is an oscilloscope view of Rob Hubbard’s brilliant ‘International Karate Championship’ soundtrack, an extremely loose adaptation of Ryuichi Sakamoto’s theme song to ‘Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence.’ There are a lot of oscilloscope videos on Youtube – they’re fascinating to watch.

And here is a 5-minute loop of Jeremy Soule’s haunting ‘Kuldahar’ music from his score for Icewind Dale.

I find myself listening to a lot of chiptunes lately. It’s one of the only types of music that really allow me to zone out and get some work done (others include trance, and J.S. Bach keyboard music).

I love video game music. Love, so thank you for this thread.

I’ll drop this here for now. Still my favorite.

Also, this is a great resource for soundtracks.

The Amiga was a formative experience for me so it’s no surprise these remain some of my favourites

I’ll throw in this one that’s (a little) more contemporary!

I love Baba Yetu. My favorite rendition of it is the live performance from Videogames Live:

We’ve had a few video game music threads over the years. This is the biggest I could find.

I know I’ve participated in one of them but I can’t seem to find it. No matter; I will be contributing to this thread heavily over the weekend.

Again, Discourse search lets me down. Or I let myself down.

I guess I should necro that one you linked.

I don’t think that’s necessary.

And yeah I never even bother to use forum search engines anymore. I just Google “site:quartertothree.com “video game music”” or what have you.

Oh cool! I’m glad you brought this up because after putting together my Convey Your Musical Taste To Us playlist I struggled to find a lot of the game music I listen to on both Google Music and Spotify. I’ll try and post some tracks up over the weekend, it’s getting late now.

@HUMBY50: yeah, I’m an Amiga zealot so those tunes hold a special place in my heart, and Baba Yetu is an incredible track.

Edit: oh okay, here’s a couple!

Faery Tale Adventure music, composed by David Joiner. Track 6 (‘Night Travel’) is my favorite.

Well “game” is a particularly crap search term here for reasons that I hope are… obvious… so when you search for “game music” you’re searching for two words that appear a lot in different contexts.

Even on top of that, this one’s pretty tough, though:

  • in:first to limit your search to the first post, if you are looking for a topic
  • #games to limit your search to the games category

and nope, sadly, still screwed. “music” is a particularly difficult, broad search term.
