In the 1950s, Bullard was a relative stranger in his own homeland. His daughters had married, and he lived alone in his apartment, which was decorated with pictures of the famous people he had known, and with a framed case containing his fifteen French war medals. His final job was as an elevator operator at the Rockefeller Center, where his fame as the “Black Swallow of Death” was unknown.

Jesus, that’s just freaking sad. At least the French seem to have remembered him for his sacrifices, as they later invited him back to France for memorial services and interred him with honors in the French War Veteran’s section of the cemetary upon his death.

Admittedly at about the time the Parisian flics were massacring Algerian protestors and chucking them in the Seine, but that’s by the by…
