They would have to switch parties totally if they wanted to keep their careers.

But only if they cast the decisive vote. If a couple senators vote to convict and it ends up being 10 votes short, those who defected aren’t going to get anything. They’ll have no party to run to.

Yeah, it’s a gamble.

Right now Mitchy the kid is worried about a full-scale wipeout in 2020. He knows they’re not getting the House back. He knows that keeping the White House is looking tougher and tougher and tougher. And in the Senate the Democrats have a puncher’s chance at picking up that net of 3 seats they’d need. If the Senate caucus thinks that Collins helps her re-election chances with an aye vote, they’ll let her do it, and then smooth it over as need be.

I’m not so sure. I think there is a good chance in the not too distant future maybe even Nov 2020, Trump won’t be President and possibly the Senate will be Democrat. Association with Trump may become toxic. Bailing out of a sinking ship is something rats and professional Republican politicians do.

edit: What trigger said.

The main reason it matters is because if the Dems can get the White House in 2020 and 50 seats in the Senate, they’re going to go hog wild on the judiciary side of things. They’re going to get Breyer and Ginsburg retired and possibly Thomas as well. And they’re going to do exactly what Mitch did in 2017-18 with federal bench appointments and undo all of that.

Cut to Vice-President Buttigieg casting the deciding vote for Supreme Court Justice Hillary Clinton.

Yeah, I’m not holding my breath for any GOP senator to suddenly find a backbone or to see their self-interest aligns against Trump. It may be that their re-election chances will be weakened voting for a conviction, but it’ll be equally so if they vote against - with the added bonus of being the target of a Trumpian/Fox-led hate mob.

It’s not impossible, but I’ll believe in GOP senators defecting when I see it.

I’ll be in my bunk.

10-in-10 will vote for him.

1/3 of British Colonial Subjects, actually

If only there were a term one could use to describe that constituency.

Only 26% of voters are Republicans.

Living in the Americas. Go schleprock someone else.

I googled it and I still don’t get it!

Notable because it’s W’s ethics lawyer saying it.

Reelection is bullshit, and career politicians are even bigger bullshit.

2 term limit on Senate, 4 on House. Let’s end this power holding bullshit. No one should grow old in Congress, unless they started out old. Holding onto power kills the Republic.

The argument against term limits always ends up boiling down to, “People should be able to elect who they want!”

But we already disallow that for the Presidency.

The reality is, if you imposed term limits… other people would show up representing the same ideals as the old people being replaced.

No single person is uniquely gifted and able to hold power in government. They are all replaceable.
