If you want to know what kind of people end up in guard towers in concentration camps then this is the answer. These are people who will kill each and every poster in this forum in the name of Trump. With a smile on their face and a prayer on their lips.
I was thinking about that just the other day. We have a Trump-supporting neighbor who is the kind of person who calls the city when your lawn is a cm too high. She is a total busybody and spends a good deal of her day walking around the neighborhood talking to her other neighbor busybody friends. She organizes the Trump/R sign distribution in the neighborhood and I’m pretty sure she attends or has some position in the local Republican party apparatus.
We’ve had conversations, and she is absolutely the worst kind of person. She’s one of these 20-30% of people who would vote for Trump even if he shot someone. I have no doubt she would personally jail immigrants or throw the switch on a execution.
And it occurred to me as she walked by me doing yard work and said some stupidly awful thing again, that in China she would be one of those Communist Party folks who turns in her neighbors for social violations. She would be totally down for that. And if this were Germany during the Third Reich, she would be the one to turn in all the Jews in the neighborhood. I wouldn’t be surprised if she already thinks she knows where they are. Certainly she has a bead on the Muslims, since there are several families in the neighborhood where the wife is wearing a headscarf. We’re pretty diverse where I’m at, luckily.
And I got really depressed. You really do have to make sure you’re fighting this shit every day, don’t you? Because the people, the politics, the hate, it’s all there already. All we need is for some elections to go the wrong way and/or the wrong kind of event to occur and it could start tomorrow. America isn’t a special place where we are smarter than that. We most certainly aren’t. I think that’s my biggest take away from the last 3 years.
Yeah. Turns out it’s never really dead, just temporarily buried.

Yes, you do. Every. Single. Day. It’s exhausting, but the alternative is worse. And really the worst part sometimes isn’t even the worst people, it’s the oblivious ones running around telling you everything is fine because you know what, the person isn’t on these awful people’s list… but knowing you are, it’s not a fight you can stop.
But…
This is awesome, and part of the reason why the fight is worth it.

And we need y’all’s help, too. Far too often when POC speak up we are told to stop being so uppity. Or to stick to our lanes. Or, good heavens, not during football.
Help us.

Would it help if we got Putin or Xi to just nuke the place and turn it into a radioactive glass parking lot? I’m not sure murrica is fixable anymore.
First of all, we live there. Second, we’d make sure the rest of the “nice” parts of the world get glassed too.

Honestly I am of the opinion that splitting the country is becoming increasingly nessecary.
I do not desire to share the country with Oklahoma or Alabama. And think we would be better off if we cut them off and let them fail.

The Southern economy is just as strong now as when the Civil War broke out. In other words, good luck with that, South.
My suggestion is to wait until after dark, and then sprinkle dandelion seeds all over her yard.

You have a lot more in common with people in Montgomery, Alabama than people in Wheeler County. Why would you want to cut off the former but not the latter?

I hear you, brother. I grew up in the South. Still:
Japanese knotweed is so bad its an offence in the UK to knowingly distribute it.

Preach. I’ve lived in the south and I totally get the sentiment, but I wouldn’t ever write it off. The greatest social movement in American history (the Civil Rights movement) was entirely southern. Some of the giants of American thought and literature hail from the south: Langston Hughes, Ida B Wells, Maya Angelou, Alice Walker, Zora Neale Hurston, Richard Wright, etc. Almost the entire American musical tradition owes its roots to the south. 1/3 of our population lives in the south and it produces about 1/3 of our economic output. I don’t want to live in an America without the south.

And I don’t want to live in an America where any chucklenut in Oklahoma can walk around with any gun they want in open cary, with no licensing or training required.
But here we are.

Not only that, but states like Oregon and California are perfectly capable of regulating their own carbon emissions, securing their own right to abortion, protecting their own immigrants, defending their own LGTBQ, funding their own single-payer health care, etc. They do not need help from DC to do any of this within their own borders.
So the main reason people in deep-blue states care about who holds power in DC is that they want to see change outside their own borders. Cutting off the South because of what is happening in DC is self-contradictory.
Your state can require training or ban open carry if they choose. So what you really want is to see changes in Oklahoma, not Oregon. But separating Oregon from Oklahoma won’t accomplish that.
The real South will rise eventually. Once enough of the old racists die off, liberal northerners relocate and existing liberal Southerners manage to untangle themselves from the web of voter suppression and gerrymandering that has kept the forces of evil in power for decades…we will see a wave of blue across the South that will finally sound the death knell for the modern GOP. It’s going to be a long battle still, and there will be setbacks and probably terrible deeds along the way as southern Republicans will not go quietly, but eventually they’re going to be outnumbered and outmaneuvered, and the forces of good will win yet another American Civil War.
