I like to believe (because living in a fantasy world is nice) that the GOP is shrinking faster then people realize, and what we are seeing is a more extreme GOP because of it.
The increasing geographic isolation of both parties, they appeal to the city or the countryside, but not both, and the lack of inter party competition, most seats are safe seats, explains the current morass.
We saw this in the lead up to the Civil War, and like then, it’s led to increasingly hard line behavior.
Trump has disenfranchised the Hoover types at the top of the party, the Country Club set, but the party platform hasn’t changed all that much in the last 30 years. Trumps bombast aside, he only made small policy tweaks.
It’s the Democrats who are experiencing real internal shifts. See the battle between Warren and the financiers, for example. Or the crack up between pro and anti Zionist forces in the party.
This geographic isolation is bad for America because we end up trying to enact policies that don’t work for most Americans. We embrace policies that speak to a small group of increasingly radical activists.

By country club I mean upper class. And Trump isn’t upper class.
Trump is rich, but culturally, he’s somewhere between working class and middle class. Look at how he speaks, and look at what he eats. He genuinely loves fast food for example.
You’re right about his economic policy, and for that reason you’d expect the never Trumpers to be more supportive, but they consider him a rube. And despise his populism.
Everyone from the Hoovers to the Bushes loathe him though. And largely because of those class issues I think.
And now he’s in charge of the party?
The hellish thing for them, is, he won, and he’s been able to enact their policies. So they have to either go into exile or swallow their pride. But either way, they’re no longer in control of the party.

Just curious if anyone else has seen a few glitches in the webcast? I’m watching on PBS and have had at least two incidents with Volker where about 5 sec was repeated. Is this just PBS or my internet or ??

Meh, a thread like this needs its comic relief.
Why? It’s a perfectly reasonable observation. As others have already noted, Trump doesn’t act like a rich person, he acts like a poor persons fantasy of a rich person.
No he acts like a stupid rich person.
He acts like a skin suit that is filled with cockroaches. Hypocritical cockroaches.
Just because someone has no class doesn’t make them a man of the people.
