Jordan is also there because nobody else wants to be the GOP name attached to this fiasco. Nunes has no choice as ranking member on the House Intelligence Committee, and even if he did he’s too stupid to realize how damaging this is going to be to him politically. Jordan doesn’t realize it either, but the GOP likely figures he’s an acceptable loss since his district is so gerrymandered that it will elect a Republican no matter who they put up, and there’s probably a line of candidates just as repugnant waiting to replace him.

The GOP is not stupid, they know whomever is the Republican face of these hearings is going to look foolish trying to defend an obviously indefensible position, so Nunes and Jordan, both probably about as safe as any Republican can get in terms of re-election, and both already pegged as being pretty out there even for Republicans, are good safe bets. They are in turn doing their part by living up to expectations. The rest of the GOP House and Senate can sit back safely and wait for their respective impeachment votes, to which they will undoubtedly vote NO, then explain their vote with “Mistakes were made, and rogue diplomacy happened and will be dealt with, but was it all an impeachable offense in the end? I thought Democrats failed to make that case.”
