“I assaulted that girl years ago. Years ago! And you have the audacity to bring it up now? NOW??!! How dare you. HOW DARE YOU.”

I support his stance on BEER, though I don’t normally shout it while crying. Sometimes.

To think that fuck is going to be making Con Law decisions for the next 30 years, probably. Ugh.

Good news! We’ll all be dead within twenty years!

Yes, about as comforting as when this guy would say it:

You have to wonder if they thought that was going to be a big hit when they wrote it. Brought to you by John Candy’s Polka band in the original Home Alone!

The Republic is ours as long as we can keep it. I think we’re watching us lose it in real time, unfortunately.

I really never had any desire to live in interesting times.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.

What worries me is that in my lifetime the U.S. has been the most powerful nation in the world, and with all our faults we were still a leading proponent of democracy and free elections. Yes, we have propped up dictators and made plenty of deals with the devil, but democracy and free market capitalism always seemed our ideals.

Now we are drifting into an autocracy. I think it will continue to be a slow drift, but elections will be more and more fixed to support the autocracy, and eventually the sham will be removed and we will be more like Imperial Rome with a Senate that has little power.

Once we go this route, will other countries follow? The conservatives just routed Labour in the UK, though I hope that’s more to do with Labour’s candidate than conservative ideology.

I’m gone in 20 years, give or take some, so I’ll probably limp to my grave and not see the worst of it. I worry for the future of human civilization, though. I hope we don’t become a world of fuedal states ruled by dictators.

Who knows, we might only be one rigged impeachment trial, one SCOTUS decision, and one election away from dictatorship here in the US.

I mean, or we could be lucky and the dictator will be a Bernie disciple who wins in 2024 after Biden’s one term breaks the Trump spell and the sun belt throws out everyone tainted by him

It’s odd, or telling, or something, that GOP Senators can’t simply say “Of course I’ll listen carefully to all the evidence, but I’ve been following this closely, and if this is all they have, I’m not very impressed with it.”

That would communicate that they aren’t inclined to convict without overtly denying their obligations to judge fairly and without actually communicating their intention to deliberately undermine the entire process. Apparently it’s not enough to signal that you’re for Trump, you actually have to promise to subvert the process in his favor.

Edit: I guess it’s of a piece with not giving a nominee a hearing when you could easily do so and then vote him/her down. It’s not enough to use your power to oppose, you have to raise a middle finger to the other side while you do it.

Yep. Cowards and traitors all. In a just world they would all face a traitor’s traditional fate.

This offers some glimmer of hope. The tl;dr is that, thus far, McConnell doesn’t have the votes for a quick whitewash, which means there could be a vote on rules where Dems have an opportunity to push for more of a trial, possibly with the support of just enough GOP Senators to get a majority.

When it comes to the GOP’s representatives, I’ve ceased giving up hope that there is any shred of human integrity left in any of them.

Would not surprise me. What has to happen is the USA has to be humbled, hard. Every other nation pretty much of any standing has had to endure defeat, occupation, or severe hardship threatening one or the other. Except the USA. The only real exception is the UK, and you can see how their path is mimicking ours. Sadly, I doubt the Canadians or Mexicans are going to invade and occupy us to teach us humility.

Fuck this guy:

To that guy: “Don’t let the door hit ya where the Good Lord split ya!”
