Yeah, the only difference is, I really thought the Republican argument would be “we don’t believe there is sufficient evidence” (while voting not to see any evidence), or “this is just foreign policy, which is in the president’s purview” (even though it obviously isn’t).

I never thought the actual Republican argument which they would say out loud is “Republican presidents are god-kings and they can do as they please; congress has no oversight power despite what is clearly written in the Constitution”.

Articulated, no less, by noted civil libertarian Alan Dershowitz.

I figure folks here assume I’m crazy or joking when I describe all Republican voters as an existential threat to every last one of us. I am finding the gradual process of being proven right pointedly unsatisfying.

If the Ds and Rs tie on a witness vote why wouldn’t Pence cast the tie breaking vote like he does in legislative matter? I hear talk that Roberts would break the tie. But he seems reluctant to play umpire and I can’t imagine Mitch rolling the dice.

Sorry if this got covered upthread

The VP has no role in an impeachment trial, because the founders believed that he’d potentially be a competitor with the President rather than a spineless lackey. They didn’t want to allow the VP to have a vote, due to the conflict of interest that stems from him becoming President if the President is impeached.

In the case of a tie vote, I believe that the Chief Justice breaks the tie.

Which brings us right back to “we’re doomed” again.

What a quaint notion.

Thanks for clarifying.

Nothing to stop Mitch from trampling the Constitution I fear. We’ll know more soon.

When they wrote it, the VP was also from the opposing party since it was whoever came in 2nd.

So, yeah, letting the guy who lost the election vote to make himself President wasn’t seen as a good idea.

Famously, Jefferson was Adams VP, right, and at the time they were from opposing factions (Anti-Federalist and Federalist, respectively).

Yes, and I think 1800 was our first ‘shitshow’ election. Many more followed.

[BURR]
Congrats on a race well-run
I did give you a fight

[JEFFERSON]
Uh-huh

[BURR]
I look forward to our partnership

[JEFFERSON]
Our partnership?

[BURR]
As your vice-President

[JEFFERSON]
Ha. Yeah, right
You hear this guy? Man openly campaigns against me, talkin’ bout, “I look forward to our partnership.”

[MADISON]
It’s crazy that the guy who comes in second gets to be Vice President

[JEFFERSON]
Ooh!, you know what? We can change that. You know why?

[MADISON]
Why?

[JEFFERSON]
‘cuz I’m the President.

[BURR]
This makes me so mad I want to shoot a founding father

I turned in right when Schiff got that laugh about the administration trying to have things both ways in court. That was beautiful.

I need a “Like, but in a despairing kinda way” button.

LOL Nice one

For all the difference it’ll make…

In other news, I hear that the Emperor has an ad running during the Super Bowl.

So does Bloomberg, I think.

Nice to have deep pockets!

Yo dawg, I heard you like Catch-22s.
