Did he STUN the room? With one strange trick that SENATORS HATE!?!

I’m almost too depressed to enjoy the occasional moments of stupidity

I saw the Bloomberg ad on Morning Joe, and although I’m saturated with MB ads, I think that the ad is quite effective. It is an issue ad, gun violence, told by a Black mother who lost a son to gun violence and the work Bloomberg had done to take on the gun lobby. I’ll be curious what you all think once you’ve seen it. The Bloomberg campaign is milking the earned media on this so you won’t have to wait for the game.

Likely course of events:

  1. GOP refuses to hear witnesses and acquits Trump
  2. Bolton’s book comes out in the spring, and it makes Trump look terrible
  3. Bolton goes on a book tour, including every talk show in the land

I don’t think that helps the GOP in November.

If recent history is any indication -

I don’t think that hurts the GOP in November.

Just a reminder, a lot people didn’t vote for Trump; a lot of people didn’t vote for Trump. We need those people to vote, all of them, and that hurts the GOP.

I once heard this weird idea that more people didn’t vote for Trump than did!

Agreed. And despite being gloomy and pessimistic today, the GOP did get clobbered in 2018. If the elections are fair we can hope that continues.

I’d argue the elections have not been fair in a number of places… for a long time. People are just more aware of it now or maybe it affects them today so they care more.

But we have people who couldn’t vote four years ago, that will vote now. We have people who thought less was at stake and probably understand today that yes, every election is important, so getting the message to them is important even if it’s not going to change a single gun stroking mind. Because those people will not be reached. We’re not trying reach them.

Yep. Trump hit an inside straight to win but now people seem to think he invented poker

Roberts really should just state “each side gets 4 witnesses. we’ll begin Monday” and be done with it. What are they going to do, impeach him?

It’ll be impeachments all the way down!

Especially if they live in FL, PA, OH, WI and MI. A few from IA and ME wouldn’t hurt either.

That’s very true, Nesrie. I guess I’m thinking more about significant escalation in that area.

I think I took the wrong pill this morning or maybe am wearing my underwear backwards… somehow I am a voice of optimism today, although I would prefer to call it a little more like realism with a dash of easy guys, not just yet! Hold on. Leave your hammer on the coat rack. We’re not there yet!

I’m glad for it, I’m channeling Eeyore today. So thanks for a bit of optimism. 🙂

We all knew going in exactly what was going to happen, that the GOP-controlled Senate was going to acquit Trump and walk. Now that it is coming to pass, why are we all so upset by it?

Knocking Trump out of office via impeachment was a longshot that was never going to hit. Instead the idea was to put him on trial, put up a clear cut case as to exactly why and how he committed impeachable offenses, and let the GOP trip all over itself defending him by bending logic, constitutional law and reality into pretzel shapes, then watch them vote to acquit despite ridiculous amounts of evidence. Thanks to the Bolton information and other stuff that’s come out over the last few weeks, that’s actually worked even better than we could have hoped. Anyone who doesn’t already have a MAGA hat surgically attached to their head will have seen the GOP basically say “Evidence? Witnesses? Trump’s own words? HA! We don’t give a flying fuck America!” and that will not work well for them in November.

The mission now is to use all these fantastic sound bites, use this “speedy acquittal” despite overwhelming evidence, use this total and blatant subversion of Constitutional Law and Democracy…and campaign the fuck out of it to get people to the polls in November. @Nesrie is 100% correct when saying VOTES will solve our problem. The Democrats and the people who support them need to hit 2020 harder than ever and get people registered to vote, campaign hard on just how terrible this Administration has been (look no further than the Bloomberg ads for a template) and make damn sure every American who wants a future that doesn’t include Donald J. Trump as Dictator for life gets to the damn polls and votes!

The problem is so few of us matter!

Like what votes I take have fuck all impact. Turning Wisconsin around is harder than it should be because of stolen GOP power in that state going to extreme lengths to invalidate urban centers, and through selective voting roll purges. While Oregon is already determined, will vote blue and have 4 Dem house members (my rep will win with 60+%)

Our national election system is fundamentally broken in ways that go beyond Trump. Changing how we vote and how we allocate representation needs a drastic overhaul, as FPTP is absolute shit.

When you have a situation where 80-90% of the population feels their vote is irrelevant, which is the case today, then you will have troubles. One person, one vote, across the entire spectrum. Change how we district, change how representatives are apportioned (I prefer some form of proportional representation, such as 3 seat districts where everyone has some form of representative) and remove the ability of politicians to gerrymander such as Wisconsin and North Carolina’s egregious examples.

But as long as so many seats and states are fixed, where a 10% electoral victory can still mean minority representation, where the tiniest fraction of states can single handedly monopolize issues then things will not improve.

I think maybe people are more upset about the arguments being used to justify it. At this point they are saying the President can do anything.
