Well, this didn’t age well.
So just to make sure my non-lawyer mind can wrap itself around the stupidity at play, it appears the only legal defense is now to say Mulvaney was lying to everyone and none of that actually happened. Right?

or the President is King defense.

Nope - its that when you’re the President, everything is legal.

Possibly, but it doesn’t matter, since the President won’t get indicted. The only defense the Senate needs is that Trump is a Republican so NOT GUILTY.
Wasn’t that Nixon’s defense? If the president does it, it must be legal?

Except the very clear bright red line of lying about getting a blowjob from an intern. That will not stand.

And the Republicans have been trying to re-litigate that ever since to make it so.
Perhaps they’ll succeed just in time for President Warren to nationalize all stocks via Executive order. LOL
It’s the “Fuck you, nerds” defense that has a 100% success rate to date. Why they try anything other than this is baffling to me. Just give the Democrats the finger and they won’t do shit.
I mean, it’s in the call. It’s even more explicit than the Biden quid pro quo. It comes right after Zelensky talks about the Javelins and Trump says “I would like you to do us a favour though”.
I don’t think they can keep doing that forever, given the way polls are going. If they think their own chances of re-election are threatened, I can see them turning on Trump. Maybe not tomorrow, but …

How are the Democrats not doing shit?

Do you want political violence? Because This is how we get political violence.
Seriously, if these fuckers actually embrace that route (they will), and they suffer no immediate consequences (seems likely at this moment) then the failure of the system will be complete. And at that point, when people no longer trust the system, things get messy.
Not that I would be sad to see any of the Trump lackeys getting their comeuppance. But lets not pretend it won’t get uglier than that.

I’ve been worried about this ever since Trump went on national TV during the debates and refused to accept the election results if he lost.
Yup. Trump’s been untouchable for 70 fucking years. We should expect this.
Remember the time Donald Trump Jr tweeted out an email thread admitting to coordinating with Russians? Remember the time Robert Mueller submitted a long ass very detailed report about the crimes the Trump administration committed trying to cover that up? What did the Democrats do then? That’s right, nothing!
I was hopeful earlier this week, I realize now how silly that was. These guys went back to their Fuck You strategy and it will work. Lots of elected officials will be very concerned, they’ll say they’re praying, and meanwhile our Congress continues to be a useless body with no ability to accomplish anything, and no fortitude to try and reassert their power.
Trump’s here to stay. I hate it, but this is what Americans want.
We may be stuck him with for the time being, but how is this “what Americans want?” He was elected without the popular vote, a narrow majority want him removed from office, and a much larger majority don’t want him re-elected.

I appreciate the occasional ray of sanity that breaks through the canopy of fatalism here.
Yeah, that kneejerk cycnicism is just so, so cowardly. It’s easy.
Fuck that.
