10 votes yes @Ironsight

The Webster-Clinton faction twists some arms in Congress before the final vote. They do some Coalition Building for 3 votes. Webster uses one personal influence for another 3 votes, and one faction influence yields another 3 votes. The Webster-Clinton faction casts 24 Yes votes. Final vote is 42 Yes - 41 No votes and Maine joins the Union.

Statesman Hannibal Hamlin, Liberal 1M/1 with 4 votes, pledges himself to the Webster-Clinton faction after seeing the effort they made to get Maine it’s statehood.

Secretary of State Stevens was approached by the ambassador for the Republic of Texas. Texas was looking to sell western lands to the United States to help prop up their budget. All that was needed was an envoy to send to Texas, and congressional approval of any deal.

Buy Western Lands from Texas is a difficulty 3 issue for the Envoy and Congress. If resolved, Reserves -10, Public Support 1 towards Liberal party. +1 popularity.

If failed/ignored, +2 IP to Liberal Leader.

@Ironsight, over to you to appoint an Envoy or ignore.

Texas will have to find some other way to make ends meet. Ignore the issue. Next issue please.

The Slave Power, frustrated in its ambitions to acquire new lands from Texas, decided to embark on a new adventure. At the urging of their constituencies in the Southern states, American ministers from France, Great Britain, and Spain met in Ostend, Belgium, preparing a circular stating the rationale for purchase or acquisition by invasion of Cuba.

Ostend Manifesto is a difficulty 5 issue for the Secretary of State and Congress.

If resolved, Reserves -120, 4IP to Liberal Leader. Public Support +1 to Liberals. Popularity +2.

Failed: +1IP to Liberal Leader, Popularity -2.

Ignored: +1IP to Liberal Leader.

@Ironsight to refer to Stevens or ignore.

President Webster is overheard saying “Cuba? Neeever heard of it. Now where did I put those cigars…” Ignore this issue. Last issue for the term please and then I’ll call it a night. @CF_Kane

The final issue of Webster’s term is the issue of slave auctions in the Capital. Members of the Liberal party have pushed to end those auctions, while conservatives support continuing them.

End Slave Auctions in the Capital is a difficulty 4 issue for the President and Congress. If resolved: 2IP to Liberal leader +1 popularity. If failed, 2IP to conservative leader. If ignored: place in next deck.

@Ironsight to propose to Congress or ignore.

President Webster is not going to restrict commerce in the Capital, not matter what is being sold. Ignore this issue.

Appointments at the end of the term:

George B. McClellan Secretary of War +1 pop
R. King Secretary of the Treasury +1 pop
W.R. King Special Envoy to Russia +1 pop

Winfield Scott is thanked for his many years of service as General and is replaced with U.S. Grant. +1 pop

@CF_Kane

The years of 1840 to 1844 were to go down in history as the “do nothing” presidency. Webster, a promising leader, used his oratorical skills as President to maintain the status quo as much as possible, with the exception of working to admit Maine to the Union.

Treasury Phase

Treasury was at 293, +38 revenue takes reserves to 331. Lots of money available to the United States government.

Election of 1844

Webster and Stevens are again the nominees (and I’m beginning to think we should have used the two-time loser rule from the expansion).

@Panzeh, you choose a VP candidate first. Once @Panzeh chooses and a VP accepts, it is up to @Ironsight.

We’ll know for next time!

Thad chooses Grant

Yeah, looking at it, the expansion doesn’t really allow for enough churn in candidates.

@Ironsight indicated in PMs that he would accept the nomination for Grant, and that he would nominate Taney again. @Navaronegun, do you accept?

If so, I believe we will not have to play out the election if @Panzeh and @Ironsight do not want to contest the result (electing Webster/Taney for a second term).

Taney accepts.

No sense going through the cube placement since we know the result. Webster-Taney will win a second term. @Panzeh to concur.

I concur.

Congratulations President Webster and Vice President Taney.

I apologize, I did not get a chance to reshuffle the deck of action cards, so I’m going to have to pause until I can get home from the office this evening and handle the deck.

While we have a brief break…is the consensus that we’re going to try to start over at 1788 and go through 1918, with the current set of players-Bruce +potentially new people?

I’m happy to keep going with this game but given the situation it probably makes more sense to restart. If we restart then I’d like to plan to go all the way to 1918 with the big expansion. I’d also like to see us add in the two smaller expansions as well for more variety. In for a penny… :)

I’m out either way so there will need to be a replacement player.

I’m in for that, we can decide which modules from the expansions to add in
