I suspect that there are three types of folks at Fox.

Straight up imbeciles, like the cast of Fox and Friends. These people are basically true believer sycophants who are too stupid to fully grasp that Trump is a lying piece of trash.

Con men like Hannity and Carlson… Hannity fits into category 1 as well to some large degree. But these guys are aware of the deception, and they’re using it to make bank.

Normal people… For these folks, I can imagine that working at Fox is incomprehensibly frustrating. To be a supposed news person, and be told by leadership that you need to deny reality, which makes you look like either a liar or an imbecile.

I think a lot of this is the equivalent of loot boxes. It was all a big joke till the dollars rolled in and now they can’t stop.

It’s not like there are thousands (or even tens) of jobs out there where you can be on TV everyday. I am sure there are a percentage of Fox people who just want the job. Wallace and Smith as examples. Maybe they think they help balance the Dobb’s and Hannity’s.

I think also that hanging around a bunch of crazy people tends to normalize the crazy. There’s definitely a feedback loop involved.

Definitely, it’s what makes social media so dangerous.

I did a Google search for “was Lou Dobbs always racist” and came up with this from 13 years ago:

CNN Stands By Lou Dobbs’ Racist Fantasies

Huffington Post blogger Bill Scher caught CNN’s Lou Dobbs in a bit of an innocent mistake Tuesday night. Seems Dobbs’ show was citing someone they shouldn’t have been — the Council of Conservative Citizens, a white supremacist group that descended from the White Citizens’ Councils of the civil rights era.

And this, also from 2006, which deep dives into his populist, anti-immigrant metamorphosis.

The Secret Life of Lou Dobbs

Why did the influential CNN business anchor undergo an abrupt metamorphosis from corporate sycophant to fire-breathing populist? LUKE MULLINS found the surprising answer in Rupert, the hardscrabble Idaho town where Dobbs grew up.

He was always really, really big on immigration, but he did come off as sane.
I suspect he was just playing softball with his positions and this was always the real him, though.

Dude is off the hook.

I need a shower.

Yes, that was how I remember Lou also. A pretty smart business reporter, with a strong xenophobic streak.

Good, fuck every person involved.

Normal Friday you say?

The President has such sights to show you (this weekend)

Looks like someone is after Pence’s job.

God, it’s all just so gross. The shameless fawning and sycophancy, I’ve never seen anything like it.

It’s because we’ve never had a president that rewarded it so much before.

I actually think he’s angling to run Trump News Network. Much more money in that.

Dear Leader is not leaving office. Dobbs will be our honest and glorious Information Minister.

I know there’s a lot of joking around about that Lou Dobbs segment but if you really listen, I mean really listen, he’s actually making a lot of sense. I don’t think I ever understood the sunshine on my face quite like this before. HE MAKES IT POSSIBLE.

Just want to point out that, as usual, if someone like Rachel Maddow had said that about Obama, she’d have been fired the next day.
