Anyone else have sound problems with Freelancer? The ambient sound is always ok, but the voice overs come and go constantly.
I had a weird problem where on the last mission the sound would cut out completely and sometimes the game would freeze and force a reboot. It killed the audio so thoroughly that I couldn’t even play mp3s after exiting the game–no sound until a reboot. I eventually finished the mission soundlessly and after one more reboot I’ve been playing post-campaign missions with audio.
That said, I had trouble hearing voicework early on as well until I just lowered the music volume. Digital Anvil could’ve done a better job balancing music and voice.
Yea, I get this with the onboard sound on my nForce2 powered ASUS A7N8X motherboard.
The readme for the game mentions sound problems with the nForce2 chipsetted boards, but alludes to the latest drivers fixing the problem… which they don’t.
I believe that I’ve remedied, or at least greatly lessened, the problem by adjusting hardware acceleration down a notch or two, and disabling 3D sound in the game. You can adjust hardware acceleration for sound by running dxdiag via the run command and clicking on the “sound” tab.

My problem is that the sound gets slightly staticky when I have afterburners on. It’s not a major problem so I haven’t gone to any effort to try to fix it.
Don’t you guys read the release notes? If you ever, EVER have a problem with a game, READ THE RELEASE NOTES.

Missing Game Sounds
If you experience missing game sounds throughout Freelancer then a different audio codec is probably being used rather that the one provided by Freelancer.
• Please follow these steps if some sounds and speech are still missing after installation:
• Uninstall any 3rd party codec pack or the Nimo Codec pack from your system.
• Uninstall Freelancer.
• Go to the following directory, C:\WINDOWS\system32 and delete the file “l3codecp.acm”. If there happens to be another file named “l3codeca.acm”, delete this too.
• If your system is Windows 98 or ME, open the system.ini file located in your system folder; C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM. Delete ONLY the line that starts with “msacm.l3acm=”. In the case of the Nimo codec pack, this will read “msacm.l3acm=l3codecp.acm”
• If your system is Windows 2000 or XP, open the system registry editor (regedit) from the RUN command window.
• Locate and delete the following key: \HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32\msacm.l3acm
• Load the Freelancer installation CD and locate the REDIST folder. Within the REDIST folder, double click on the file named “WMFADist.exe” and follow on-screen instructions.
• Install Freelancer.
Worked great - didnt need to uninstall any codecs, only delete the old one.
Guess I am just use to shoddy workmanship when it comes to games and didnt think to check the notes. Won’t ASSume anymore. Thanks.
