FreeSpace2?

Anyone know where I can buy this still? Every year I feel a hankering for a space sim like the good ol’ days. (sniff)

Have you tried Amazon? I’ve gotten some really old off-the-wall stuff there.

I believe Freespace 2 is open source now, isn’t it? Wouldn’t that make it freely downloadable anywhere?

i found the 2 privateer remakes…it’s like christmas…

Privateer where?!

hohoho

This still requires the original game CDs, as the actual game content is still under copyright. The open source project really only replaces the executable. (Well, it also adds a smidgen of other stuff.)

As it happens, I was browsing a local used music/game store a few months back, and found a copy of Freespace 2. Perfect condition. Still in the box. Has the keyoard chart and everything. It cost $5. One of these days, I am going to sell it on eBay for some stupid amount of money that I know just someone will be willing to pay. (Naturally, I still have my old copy from when it was in stores the first time around.)

DIVE DIVE HIT YOUR BURNERS PILOT!

I’ve got a copy just gathering dust. I’ve made this offer on these forums before: PM me with your address and I’ll send it to you. Considering the game’s so damn hard to find now, and yet so good, I think it would be nice to have a copy making the rounds of Qt3 so that people who haven’t yet played it can have that opportunity. Cuz it’s good.

I’m pondering the ethics of ripping the CDs before I send it, though. I think I probably will, since they’re getting kinda scratched in that sleeve. And I can’t really defend the integrity of a system of distribution that revolves around either lucky finds in the bargain bin or crazy prices on ebay.

Besides, I’m in a revolutionary mood. I just read V for Vendetta and realized that I don’t blow up nearly enough buildings. Can anybody tell me how to make a bomb? If it’s anything like making stuff in World of Warcraft, I already know it’ll end in tears. I’ll spend weeks of real time painstakingly building up my skill by making worthless crap, then I’ll look at the ingredients for the only thing I can make that’s any good (skill 300 required, of course) and it’ll say I need some rare drop from some rare creature that’s extinction-camped by farmers around the clock and wind up simply having to grind for days in order to pay the inflated farmer price for these farmer-controlled items on the auction house. Then I’ll make the damn thing, only to discover that my class can’t use it, and nobody will buy them because even if anyone were willing to pay a price that covered my massive expenses in making it (as if any amount could give me back the time I wasted), there’s something twice as good that drops off Ragnaros. So I decide to eat my losses (like I have a choice) and give it to a guildmate who’s not even sixty yet. But then the next week he tells me he sond it to a vendor on account of getting something better off a goddamned ogre in Feralas – not even Dire Maul, but Feralas! Fucker wasn’t even named, and to top it off he was only helping a friend in her forties quest! (Those escorts are a bitch.) That’s pretty much when the ending in tears happens. When I think about that stuff I’m glad I’m not still paying for WoW anymore. Then I remember that I canceled one day too late to keep my six-month subscription from renewing again, so technically, I still am. Even though it’s not installed (because installing it is like trying to command frogs – regular-sized frogs, not anthropomorphic Everquest frog people – to build Stonehenge using only the power of swing dancing). It was eighty bucks that I couldn’t really afford, but their billing department is now just a single phone left off the hook in an attic somewhere, because actually resolving billing complaints would mean lost money. Can’t have that!

In conclusion, terrorism is probably harder than it looks, although as Al Qaida’s new second-in-command I don’t plan to let that get me down. They told me when they interviewed me that it was a very high-turnover position, but when I worked at Burger King they really looked down on short-timers and I learned to view every job not just as a paycheck, but as a life choice.

Also in conclusion, PM me with your address and I’ll send you Freespace 2. First timestamp gets it. After you finish it, I encourage you to pass it along to somebody else who has not played it. I might play it again, but I’m neck-deep in games right now. I don’t know if I’m going to be done with Crusader Kings or Galciv 2 in this lifetime, and I have a ton of RPGs – the real kind, with roleplaying and no computers – lined up. So send me a message and take this bad motherfucker (shut your mouth/hey I’m talking about Freespace 2/then we can dig it) off my hands.

Freespace 2’s license explicitly allows you to distribute copies to your friends and acquaintances. No joke. So if you know someone with the game they can burn perfectly legal copies and give them to you.

There’s images of the game easily found via the wiki links.

Come on now, read/watch Fight Club a few more times.

Does anyone know if this game is still playable over the Intertron? Because I would so love to reinstall my copy and dogfight other humans.

There’s a huge online following right now, and the open source project has made sure to keep the net aspects working.

However, you will get your ass kicked. Over and over. Without fail.

Well hell, if the damn thing’s readily available I see no reason to spend the postage. Download away, guys.

Funny you should say that, scharmers… I’ve watched AND read Fight Club a SHITLOAD of times, and I mean that with the full weight of every single shit in the load. I once alienated the living fuck out of a friend of a friend by watching Fight Club with her (shortly after 9/11, although it didn’t occur to me that anyone would find this important until afterward) and angrily defending the film when she said it made her uncomfortable.

Jaw Hits Floor, Bowels Empty Themselves

Ah, such great stuff. Anyways, Freespace 2 shouldn’t be that hard to find on Amazon or Ebay, but be sure to get it at a decent price. You can also download a butchered copy at Home of the Underdogs…which seems to be down right now, so nevermind…

There were several of us here at QT3 playing last year, I’ll dig up the thread and post a link to it here.

Edit: here we go

You can find torrents around the net. If you happen to be a SA Goon, check the games forum for the Freespace 2 Megathread, there’s a link to a goon-only torrent.

It looks much better. Half of the Terran ships have been remodeled but just a few of the Shivan and Vasudan have. Effects textures, ship textures, and backdrops are all new or updated.

There was a time when I was watching it (or parts of it) every. single. day.

I think Jeff Lackey still has my copy of Freespace 2. So if anyone needs the CDs, pm Jeff for them. Just let me know who has them so I can point random people to you the next time someone on QT3 asks. :-)

LOL! Yeah, I have Roger’s CDs and in fact pulled them out last week to send them back - I’ll ask Roger’s permission before I send them to someone else. (I’m in Taiwan this week, so I may be unresponsive until I get back.)
