David X. phoned me about an hour ago and said that this Futurama project
is a done deal! Here’s the word from DX—
There are 4 DVD movies that we’ll start recording at the end of July or
August.Full feature length FUTURAMA movies.

This all would have been resolved much sooner if they had just employed the hypnotoad.

Man, I’m just now watching all of the Futuramas, and I hadn’t seen the hypnotoad. One night after a considerable amount of cannabis, the damn thing came on with that noise, that godawful NOISE, and I nearly died laughing. I literally could taste blood from laughing so much.

I didn’t watch the last season totally in order. Is the final episode the one that Fry plays the flute-like thing at the end? If so it was the perfect ending to a series, and I’d hate to see anything come after it. Maybe if they took place during the series timeline.
It’s hard to talk about the order of Futurama episodes because were aired out of order of production. In fact, the entire last season was episodes produced for the previous two seasons but never aired for various reasons.
That being said, the episode you refer to was the last episode produced and the last episode ever shown new.
I really don’t have anything to contribute here other than to say: This is the best news I’ve heard all day.
In the DVD commentary for this episode, Groening and company note that they were 90% sure that this was going to be the last episode when they were working on it. So they purposefully put in the ending scene with the holophoner as a bittersweet closure to the Fry/Leela relationship. It was indeed really well done.
Awesome. I’ll reiterate a need for the series to come back, as well. I find Futurama holds up better than any other animated series… even Family Guy isn’t as consistently watchable.
