FYI Facebook Whatsapp Instagram are down

Everything is. Mobile calls today were terrible because WhatsApp is popular enough in Brazil that most people will use it for calls instead of normal voice channels. With WA down, the quality of calls took a very noticeable dive here, because more people are contending for less voice channels and compression can get really… uh… “agressive”.

My experience travelling over the last few years is that WhatsApp is the preferred method of communication everywhere in the Americas south of the U.S. and throughout SE Asia.

It’s ubiquitous here. Nobody makes direct cell calls; everyone uses WhatsApp. Has to do with the treatment / cost of airtime minutes vs. data I think.

Is this why Telegram has been slow as shit, because of WhatsApp refugees clogging the system? #SendThemBack

I am unable to look at my IT meme’s , I am sads.

And make Facebook pay for it!

So, should I just post pictures of my dinner and my kid doing cute things here or … ?

God help us if there is a nice sunset tonight

All those poor people unable to “do their own research on vaccines”!

Heh. Schadenfreude is delicious.

Yeah, instagram is going through now as well.

My feed of cute froggy pictures isn’t working yet though.

edit - back up now.

Facebook login is working too, but I don’t have any messages so nah.

My wife just got my FB Messenger messages I was sending her all day.

Nature is healing?

Edit: what may have tipped the tide was a SMS text group I JUST created for my family. Correlation or causation?

Every popular alternative is centralized too. IMessage, WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, they all share in that vulnerability.

Of course there are alternatives, they just aren’t popular. Matrix is the best of them.

Seems the most likely.

Someone’s getting fired…

It’s been my experience that WhatsApp is popular across most of Europe, South/Central America and most of SE Asia. Japan and Korea are kinda holdouts in Asia by preferring Line.

The internet is, indeed, made of shoe-strings and glue, just fancy ones, but BGP is at the top of the list of things to not fuck up.
Alas, the companies who need to mess it with also have money to throw at solving it quickly, so they’re back. Barf.
