Who are my buddies???

I’m not lying about what you said! I clearly said that’s my best guess at what I think you’re saying because you’re not giving me anything else to go on!

Did you write some other super-detailed and super-specific posts that your browser ate or something?

At the very least could you do me a favor and copy/paste your previous posts which you think are as detailed and specific as what I’m looking for?? You’re making me feel like I’m on an entirely other planet I’m so confused.

Virgil Hilts -

I’m talking about commercial reactions, you’re trying to wave them away. You’ve confused yourself with your “sides”, “anger”, etc.

And I’m sure you’re comfortable with a rather silly position there, given the disagreement here and some of the posts - there’s a lot of anger here and I don’t get at all why you feel “comfortable” that people won’t react emotionally. People have doxxed me before for less. (Heck, for being right about the Fallout 3 devs ignoring the Fallout Fanchimps)

LMN8R - Help, right. Your elaborate fantasy isn’t going to get elaboration in that fashion, no, so sorry. And you’re “confused”, right.

Nope, I see effects, I talk about effects. That’s all there is to it, and the sort of morass which now gets you a massive amount of fire from The Internets (because it’s not like there’s any kind of real target discrimination, and “friendly fire” is less a phrase and more a reality of what happens if you venture into the morass…) …well, no, people won’t. It ain’t worth it, especially if you’re a corporation and risk-averse. It’s a nice add-on, but their AAA games will survive without venturing there so…

What commercial reactions?? What am I trying to wave away?? I haven’t even used the word “sides” or “anger” in any of my posts. What are you talking about??

What is my position?? What have people doxxed you for??

At this point I’m convinced your throwing specific words into a random sentence generator to deliberately confuse people for shits and giggles.

I replied to Virgil Hilts, you replied in the interim. I’ll make it plainer, since obviously you’re playing dumb.

And there you go, making it plain you’ve not read my posts. You are now making up nonsense like “random sentence generator” now, and I’m sure you’ll use them as justification for whatever further action you take - and I’m sure at this point you will, why else do this stupid kind of deflection when you didn’t read my posts…

To be plain, for the peanut gallery, since I’m convinced you won’t read this;

  1. There is now a morass around a variety of topics.
  2. Venturing into them gets you bad PR from The Internet, and worse.
  3. Corporations are going to avoid them, being risk-averse when it’s not critical for their major games.
  4. This means some areas of games are going to be a bit blander, and some minor games will get canned. Also, if you discuss these topics in your games as an indy in future, you’ll need to be prepared to be attacked and doxxed because people will come pre-upset, regardless of if what you’re doing is bad or not.

Heck, it’s stuff like we’ll see both a male and female protagonist on boxes, even when that makes no sense. (i.e. two versions of the same character, which only really works as a specific stylistic choice and more often looks silly). It’s…“meh, really?”

Starlight’s word of the day calendar landed on morass and he’s determined to get his money’s worth.

Man, I’m reading your posts too, and random sentence generator sounds pretty close.

Your understandable theory, from the last post, now is that post-GamerGate corporations are going to be cowed into avoiding being tolerance, which, OK, that’s a prediction. I don’t think you’re right, I think you don’t understand that this thread is disproportionately pro-GG(even as the actual pro-GG posters continue to constantly caveat and backtrack), and obviously the 2 canceled projects you mentioned are fictional, but it’s a prediction about the future so it can’t be “incorrect”. We can agree to disagree on that, you’ve finally stated a clear concept. Bioware caught shit from proto-GamerGate reactionary elements for DA:0, they still made ME3 and DA:I even more inclusive, but maybe the tide has turned and the next Dragon Age won’t have that stuff.

But what the heck does any of that have to do with the posts Soma and I made about the white male default in entertainment?

Keep telling me what I know, Virgil, and trying to relate it back to something entirely different to what I said.

Your complete denial of what I am observing in the games industry because it doesn’t suit your narrative…others may not have views or know things which contradict your dogma. You might not want to admit who you stand with, but it’s very clear and your very attack proves my point quite nicely.

As a proud, card-carrying peanut gallery member …

1, 2, & 3 (and I kinda guess part of 4): Haven’t there always been taboo subjects for company representatives to talk about? I mean, it almost seems like you’re saying we were once in this golden age of talkiness, but now we’ll only get to wave farewell to it as it fades toward the horizon. I hope he doesn’t mind, but I’ll drag one forum member as an example: Brad. He made the self-admitted mistake of posting various different things (mostly in P&R) that didn’t have one bit to do with playing his actual games, but it still wound up earning him a significant backlash. He mentioned, iirc, that he learned he was not just himself when posting online, but also the face of his company and therefore decided to curtail his postings on personal views because of it. And that was well before #GG was a twinkle in anybody’s eye. It’s just the reality of corporations dealing with PR in the Information Age.

  1. Yeah, there will always be bad actors. If someone wants to make a statement aside from the content of their game, they’re putting themselves out there with a bullseye painted on their backs. It’s a terrible thing, but that’s also something that’s not a real change from the past. I do believe that GGers have likely had more of a chilling effect on that kind of demonstration, but I suspect their impact will fade with time.

Finally, boxes: What?!? I sincerely doubt that will ever happen except as a stylistic choice (say, for instance, we have a protagonist whose consciousness shifts from one body to the next - THAT would make sense, then). Nobody here has suggested anything like that.

See, you’re back to it. I think you’re trying to be smug and clever, but when you say “who [I] stand with”… I have no idea who that is. It’s not that I’m afraid to admit it, I’ll gladly admit I stand with a bunch of people, but your writing is so confusing I’m not sure if you’re pro-GG accusing me of being a SJW or anti-GG accusing me of being pro or what. Dogma?

I’m not sure if there are posts you’re making that nobody else can see or what, but you’ve completely lost me again. What does any of this have to do with the ME box?

Also, again, to recap: you don’t know about any unannounced projects that were canceled because they were too SJW or too GG(again, it’s unclear why you think they were canceled, but it doesn’t matter, because nope). Beyond that obviously apocryphal claim, I don’t really know what you and I disagree or agree about!

That would be a real tragedy.

None of your concerns are real, and corporations don’t really care much about this stuff. They happily release major games targeted at males and dominated by males and masculinity and will continue to do so without any slackening of pace, GG paranoia/SWJ activism notwithstanding.

Nope, I’m discussing not what people here want, but what we’re likely to get - you gotta remember that corporations are basically risk-averse on this sort of thing, even when it ends up hurting their bottom line. Remember THQ’s Rubin and the no place for a purple dildo comment? (In South Park, sure, since that was already popular in other media, but not Saints Row)?

It’s agree it’s a matter of degree, but the whole barrage has dragged in some big-name companies, and I do think there’s further real nastiness possible against indy devs who make the mistake of being outspoken or making games which address any of the affected issues.

Also, should say I feel that it’s knocked back games being taken seriously as a creative medium by a few years, too. The immaturity on display, from many quarters, is wince-worthy. That it’s not really games companies being immature but some types of game fan has been mysteriously (ha) missed by some anti-game elements of the right. (I’m pleased that Jack Thompson really flamed out some time ago and he was pretty much ignored, but…)

Virgil - I even used bullet points, and you’re still projecting your issues at me.
Soapy - Right. You speak for every company, and other views are not real.

You’re just proving my point.

The most significant backlash against Brad was prompted by the unbelievable shit he said in his deposition during his lawsuit. No one who read that would want their mother/sister/daughter/friend/girlfriend/whoever female to work for him.

Sure they’re risk-averse. Why does any of this make a dent in the environment and approach that already existed?

Remember THQ’s Rubin and the no place for a purple dildo comment? (In South Park, sure, since that was already popular in other media, but not Saints Row)?
No, I actually don’t - that doesn’t mean I didn’t see it, I just don’t remember it. Besides, I generally leave people’s predilections to themselves.

It’s agree it’s a matter of degree, but the whole barrage has dragged in some big-name companies, and I do think there’s further real nastiness possible against indy devs who make the mistake of being outspoken or making games which address any of the affected issues.
Sadly quite possible, at least for a time.

Also, should say I feel that it’ll knock back games being taken seriously as a creative medium by a few years, too. The immaturity on display, from many quarters, is wince-worthy. That it’s not really games companies being immature but some types of game fan has been mysteriously (ha) missed by some anti-game elements of the right. (I’m pleased that Jack Thompson really flamed out some time ago and he was pretty much ignored, but…)
I suspect that it’s going to be much ado about nothing in regards to the industry as a whole (horrific for individuals, of course) when it’s all said and done, but only time will tell.

Thank you for making my point (corporate PR in the Information Age, that is)

Starlight- Why can’t you just concisely and clearly make your point? I don’t know if it’s a language issue, because… you didn’t use bullet points. Not in any post I can see, at least.

Not only did SR3 have a dildo bat, SR4 kept the dildo bat and was even more ambitious(in scope) and “edgy”(in humor/sexual stuff) than SR3(albeit under a new publisher). Now you’re getting unclear again. Is it SJWs who are going to get corporations to cancel their games, or Gaters?

Slow down. We can’t see the words you write and delete before posting, just the ones that end up in the thread.

Which, from my knowledge of Brad, was blown way out of context/proportion. I might have a different perspective if I didn’t know some of the particular players except from that deposition.

Dan_Theman - That wasn’t about people’s “predilections”, it was about the fact that he didn’t see the game as being congruent with THQ’s corporate image. Heck, wasn’t so long ago Nintendo was being squeeky-clean about third party games for their systems.

We’ll see overall, I agree, but I think internet bad behavior will get worse not better. Or we’ll see government interference, worse…believe me, the Tories in the UK would love to heavily regulate games and they might just do it if they get back in* (Stupid, yes, but they /are/ stupidly moralistic on these issues), and it’d let them blame “games”, even though again it’s a certain type of game fan.

They’ve already said they’ll use online bulling as an excuse for a raft of measures.

(*edit: I’d missed a few polls, revised… I give that a 50% chance at the moment)

Virgil…Numbered bullet points. Still bullet points, Virgil. And SR4’s tortured development history and release by Deep Silver, well, I don’t believe the purple dildo was a THQ idea there.

And you type the words, yet you still spend ages looking very hard for the words I don’t write, Virgil. Funny that, as you spin off tangents I never talked about and then say I’m not talking about them. Again. I won’t “slow down”, i.e. descend to your level, no.

I speak for my opinion.

You’ve done a great job in this thread, some sterling work. No one at QT3 has done more to assist the anti-SJW argument and demonstrate seagull politics. So much so I even suspected you are Aszurom or one of the GG’ers, but at times you are completely incomprehensible.

Hey, if he finally makes a good game I’ll buy it. I just won’t be steering my cousins his way.

edit - let’s not derail
