One of the biggest problems with geek culture is this inviolable principle of being nice to other geeks, because any ostracism brings up HS bullying PTSD or whatever. (you can “bully” me because I’m acting like a total Chad)
Like 3 or 4 people have bragging about putting me on ignore in this thread(OMG CENSORSHIP!!!) because I’m a dick to #GGers and bigots. Everyone should be a dick to those people! pwk keeps casually brushing off all the terrible shit #GG does as “oh well that’s just /pol, GNAA, chan gamer culture”… but why is that the culture? That’s pretty intensely fucked up.
“Bow, N****” was like 7 years ago, I guess the lesson people took away from “New Games Journalism” was “oh boys will be boys! tehehe racial slurs are edgy, thankfully nobody is actually racist anymore”?

On some level, I want to try and help you understand your error Virgil, but I think you are too entrenched in your anger to even hold a reasonable conversation. I thought maybe there was something under the bitter angst, but maybe not. It’s worth noting though that this forum is by no means some kind of haven for right wing extremists. The fact that you have folks like Dan ignoring you says a lot more about you than them. You kind of brought this on yourself.

I can count the number of right wingers here on one hand. I strongly disagree with them, but only have one on ignore and it’s not because of his beliefs.
Guys like Virgil make me ashamed of my political beliefs. I actually agree with him on almost everything, but ffs he is acting like such a douchebag I almost wish I didn’t.

I feel that way on a larger scale. I care about the issue, but I feel many of the issue’s biggest supporters are just terrible problems themselves.
I mean, swatting, harassment, doxxing- all that stuff doesn’t become ok just because it’s happening to bad people.
It is fucked up, and that so called “culture” of normalized offensive behaviour for the lols is definitely a core problem, and it is hard to have any reasonable discussion with those people… look how the one guy who fairly reasonably, if over-earnestly, expressed his discomfort at using “PC master race” to describe PC gamers; he got instantly dogpiled by a crowd of people for whom suppression of any dissenting or uncomfortable opinion has become their default mode.
At the same time, while I don’t have a big problem with being a dick to drive by trolls, I don’t think being a dick to people who are trying to have a reasonable discussion even if they are coming from a place of latent sexism or racism is going to “snap them out of it”. It’s just going to force them back into the bunker and shut down the dialogue.
For myself I’d like to work towards giving people the benefit of the doubt most of the time, and re-opening doors I had previously slammed shut whenever I can. Weirdly the one person on this forum with whom an open dialogue seems consistently impossible professes to be a left-winger (and I am not talking about you Virgil).
Keep bracing that door shut against the Commies, Soapy.
Alstein - exactly.

So you are the anti-GG version of the GG guy who writes shitty things in the comments? And you think that is an effective way to discuss things.

Because then everyone who agrees with him is tainted by his assholeishness? Like much of the GG crowd is tainted by the assholes who make unwarrented comments.
I had wondered for some time if he and another “outspoken” thread contributor on the other side of it were actually the same person making an attempt at trying to make that kind of point through performance art. I came to the conclusion that was not the case. Besides, these nebulous clouds of GGers and anti-GGers makes it kind of hard to establish that kind of a relationship at large from my perspective because I don’t know who to associate with that “shame” aspect (let alone whether they deserve it or not), so it becomes more of a personal crisis.
As for the ostensible reasons that GG came up with in the first place - journalistic integrity - I think that’s about as controversial as saying “I like pie.” The only controversy comes into play when looking at the behaviors of individuals in how they deal with it.
Pie?! Way to marginalize scones, shitlord.
What about when Soapyfrog called you a pedophile? And the time Shivax said you were the leader of cult of Aztecs? And when Timex guffawed at you consorting with Pol Pot? And the time that pasty fireman called you a cunt? You might as well fully embrace the voices in your head before your insanity inevitably leads you to life nestled on a sewer grate for warmth.
If someone is legitimately concerned with “ethics in games journalism” (lol), then yes they should be ashamed of gamergate behavior.
Honestly, behavior like Virgil’s makes me reconsider my stances on things. If this is how like-minded folks behave, maybe I should evaluate my beliefs. But you can’t talk about this stuff, because it’s tone policing or something.
Not this again. You keep your pie talk where it belongs.

I used to be part of a community that actually does have major issues with harassment and still does. I can see when and where things become a problem.
You don’t solve the problem by lecturing from outside the community - you solve it by making a new, better community.
For gaming, I think Steam is going to be great for this, and already has been. It’s allowed the social justice to get games out there, and there is enough demand for them that you can make a living with woman-oriented games such as otome games. A free marketplace with low costs of entering and low opportunity costs for increasing supply is great for new ideas, though in general, the market for games is heavily oversupplied these days.
If anything, I think making games that appeal to new audiences will be the only way non-stellar indie game devs will be able to make a living because the level of competition will be so high in the mainstream genres.
PC Master Race was a great opportunity for some inappropriate Nazi jokes and little more. Look at /r/PCMasterRace a few days after the article, its forgotten and they are back to wondering just how many £800 video cards they can shoehorn in their beloved PC and fetishizing Gabe Newell. KIA have run with it of course, but they obsessively pick up anything remotely gamergate related.
Even my respected and esteemed opponent Soapyfrog saw it for the bait it was but as you are fulfilling the role of the easily offended, super cereal and oh so touchy SJW in this thread you went full Suey instead. I guess you are fairly young and have never come across a troll (old definition) before. I don’t think you would have lasted 5 mins on usenet or some of my old mailing lists. Perhaps you’ve been spending too much time in safe spaces and hugboxes and are unprepared for the rough and tumble of a flame war? Step back, calm down, spend some time in a nice safe space, I worry you’re about to have a coronary on us at times.

Did you realize that ( e ^ pi*i ) + 1 = 0? WTF? Does the universe itself have a pie bias? Or is the universe saying something about imaginary pies?
