This whole callout culture that seems to be all the rage these days appears to me to just be a veneer for sadistic sociopaths to try and harm people using morality as a shield.

Yes I am correctly labelling what Teiman is talking about as “conspiracy”. Pretty much required for a global communication blackout that would earn the respect of the NSA.

You are just complaining about overzealous moderation, which I agree is not conspiracy it’s just a feature of the internet, hand in hand with trolls and unfiltered “opinions”. You know how like when some game companies suppress negative opinions of their product on their official message boards.

It was awesome when those toolbags at PGI got shadow banned from the reddit for their own game.

Here a straight white male feels entitled to concern troll about homosexuals… because he’s coming from the left. Just like Von Neumann told us, all contradictions ultimately reveal themselves to be transformations of each other.

Political correctness gone mad!

Of course, gamergate would have been a week long flash in the pan limited to a few hundred folks trolling Zoe Quinn and relegated to a forgotten page on encyclopaedia dramatica if not for the gamers are dead articles and SJWs and games"journalists" trying to make a career from it to this day.

Edit: we would still be having this conversation because SJWs and identity politics are the wealthy, bored, guilty middle classes new hobby but it would be labeled something else.

You don’t know what concern troll means. Or “entitled”. Or “contradictions”. But otherwise, definitely, excellent point. A real contribution to the discussion.

I thought that SJWs were unemployed losers? You might have more success swaying the masses if you got your offensively stupid rationalizations for your own callousness on the same page as Brad and metaredditcancer.

Seriously, a hobby. Advocating for civil rights of minorities is a hobby? Treating oppressed demographics with the slimmest modicum of respect: a hobby. Not one you partake in, obviously, you’re more into playing vidya with the half-naked ladies on the box cover. Your parents must be so proud.

Brad is also complaining about underzealous moderation, like one post before he begged Tom to ban me and bragged about the rest of the SJWs he exiled.

What’s good for the goose must not under any circumstances be applied to the gander. The gander needs its feelings protected. Geese need to know to keep quiet.

So gamergate wouldn’t have been an ongoing thing except for all the outrage they manufactured to keep themselves an ongoing thing? I guess I agree with that! If only charlie hebdo hadn’t published cartoons of mohammed, they wouldn’t have been attacked! They did it to themselves guys! ISIS would just be a flash in the pan if it were not for these journalists making a living mocking Islam.

Oh my god.

Still going on about the “gamers are dead” articles.

(which, again, didn’t actually exist in the way GamerGate thinks they did)

Basically, pwk’s post (which I unfortunately only saw because other people quoted him. yeesh, stop it!) amounts to "if people with empathy simply ignored the fact that hundreds of people were destroying the lives of innocent women, none of this would have happened!

But then a few writers started criticizing the ‘gamer’ stereotype, so all bets were off because GamerGate is a bunch of fucking insecure babies who can’t stand anyone remotely questioning their legitimacy".

To re-iterate:

  1. Leigh Alexander’s first post, which is commonly accused of “attacking gamers”, is not doing anything of the sort. It’s an article talking to developers, about how the gamer stereotype no longer has to be their audience. Sure her writing was a bit hightened due to the context in which it was written, but it’s neither attacking all gamers nor saying that all gamers represent the stereotype.
  1. The subsequent articles are not some massive organized conspiracy where everyone happened to start attacking gamers at the same time. They are instead reactions to Alexander’s article, related to it, or re-postings of it.

Stop being sensible, LMN8R - that has no place in P&R ;)

I don’t even get the outrage over the “Gamers are Dead” stuff. Even if it was true that a bunch of writers “conspired” to write similar articles on their “secret” chat channel, so what?

Alexander’s recent piece about the Law and Order episode is pretty excellent too:

There are some themes in the episode I hate seeing enforced: that there is something unique to boys that draws them to video games; that that something is an innate evil instability, an appetite for violence and destruction that girls just don’t share. That the most popular games are bloody shooters. Most concerning is the way the show plays with the idea that playing video games can desensitize you to real-life violence, even make you a better shot with a real gun. These are all dangerous and untrue assumptions.

But when I ask how we got here – why does the mainstream media think this about “us” video game makers, players, fans? – I’ve gotten some weird answers. It’s us noisy feminists presenting a wrong impression of gaming to the world, apparently. We complain about problems, so the mainstream media thinks that problems are all we are. Everything was going great for mainstream perception of games until people like me came along, right? Judging by some of the tweets I’ve gotten, you’d think I personally lied to the makers of Law & Order so that they’d present an offensive, upsetting story about how women in games are doomed to be assaulted and intimidated out of their jobs.

Like, if not for women like me, the writers of Law & Order would understand the innate cultural validity of video games, they presume. There would be a more flattering and nuanced portrayal of gaming, if only us women would stop pretending that we are a little bit afraid to be here sometimes.

It’s basically pointing out the obvious about how the latest flare-up around SVU is yet more victim blaming. God forbid women actually want to show men how shitty it is to be a public figure in gaming who’s also a woman.

But then you have people like Brad Wardell trying to deflect and claim he gets it just as bad as those women, so obviously exclusively focusing on women is a distraction. But then he posts shit like this which basically undermines his entire point:

But [Zoe Quinn] did get some media coverage that her game probably didn’t warrant from people she was sleeping with.

Yuck. Yeah, there’s a CEO and a public figure in the industry purporting lies to assassinate the character of a woman but it’s Leigh Alexander who’s actually to blame for the shit like the SVU episode.

Judging by some of the tweets I’ve gotten, you’d think I personally lied to the makers of Law & Order so that they’d present an offensive, upsetting story about how women in games are doomed to be assaulted and intimidated out of their jobs.

Yep, sums it up. And now fans of that show think gamers are terrorists and murderers, instead of just impotent clowns who say shitty things to each other on social media.

Here’s some hilarity. This student film, Loot, was submitted to a campus movie festival. It predictably didn’t win. Instead of coming away from the experience with ideas for another movie, or maybe some techniques for improving his movie-making skills, he decided to blame the “social justice agenda.”

The link is on Archive.org because he’s since deleted his original post.

My cast and crew went through a grueling 100 hour shoot in 6 days. I spent three 20 hour editing sessions to cut the movie right after and hand it in by the deadline.

Little did we know, we fucked up. We didn’t need to compose shots, fight the sun for perfect lighting, develop a coherent script, wait for wind, planes, and motorcycles to pass to get good audio.

No you could take an afternoon, not know how to use a camera, no need for proper ISO, aperture, shutter, or even a fucking color balance, hell your footage could be completely over exposed or crushed in black to the point where the image can’t be made out, the audio could be sloppy with noise, popping, essing, and inaudible. You could take this one afternoon and film absolute shit, and hand in a recognition worthy film as long as you were in on the agenda. As long as you knew what was up, and got it. Just include homosexual relationships, transgender identity, rape, sex trafficking, poverty, domestic violence against women and you’ll be in.

This social justice movement really boils my blood. I just want to stop being pushed to think and feel things I have no inclination to think and feel. I want the work to matter again not the intentions behind it. This SJW bullshit is too oppressive, too influential, and just too much.

Right. It’s not because the movie you turned in was hot garbage. It’s because you didn’t make your film align to the oppressive SJW agenda.

If this stuff is fun for you, theres more for you.

Ask if you want more.

You win the thread. So true.

Generally, bitching that a contest is unfair is weak. Not that it doesn’t happen, but when that’s the case, whatever… just don’t enter that contest again.

I’d like to see some of the films that were given recognition though, to see if his criticism of them is at all valid.

EDIT:
Holy shit I just turned on HIS movie, and it’s terribad.
Bad to the extent that I have a hard time imagining that other movies COULD be notably worse.

The Jury Award Winners are here: http://www.campusmoviefest.com/movies

Yes, some of them are not great. They all suffer from varying degrees of amateur student director syndrome, but Loot is really another level of terrible. Even if you don’t like the “SJW agenda” subject matter of a couple of the finalists, at least they have the basics of focus, sound, and lighting.
