A lot of the backlash over this appears to because various people with unpopular social views regarding gender, sexuality, and race had retreated to gaming culture and found a welcoming community, and the “SJW menance” of actual criticism by certain publications was seen as an invasion from the outside. Whereas, it seems to me that a small group of indie gamers criticized the gaming media for giving meritless coverage to a developer because they were, literally, in bed with her and rather than addressing that criticism (or ignoring it) the press threw a temper tantrum labeling gamers as misogynists and just generally freaking out.
