Interesting how it is exclusively sexual proscriptions except for the race one. Can you imagine a similar list coming out of Saudi Arabia? “Men and women’s backsides must be depicted of equal magnitude, otherwise this thing will be haram.” I wonder if Sarkeesian says these things because the FF audience expects it or if policing sexuality is really the only thing that interests her about games.

I think Anita’s list is pretty solid in terms of guidelines. Doesn’t mean I would want to see it in every game, but it’s a pretty solid list.

Yeah it looks like a good list to me, and it would not be necessary in every game. I mean just look at film and television. There is a wide range. Look at mainstream games and no… only a few genres even try.
Actually, we do it so we don’t get attacked by the dozens of people who constantly monitor social media for any mention of “GamerGate” in order to shout down opposition.

At least we can agree on the colour of a dress
(I see it as white and gold)
So the Escapist has made some changes and has been attacked for hiring a more diverse group of editors (hired a woman who was an outspoken member of the GG and #notmyshield crew, as well as another male editor who is perceived as more right-wing than the guy he’s replacing). Yahtzee Crowshaw of Zero Punctuation has, of course, also been very vocally critical of SJW-intolerance. Good clip summarizing recent developments, which also includes an amusing clip from the new female editor and some comments from Yahtzee (Yahtzee stars around the 7 minute mark and talks about shirtgate, etc: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UC8rynDZCl0)
A 10 minute video of Sargon droning on and on about SJW argle bargle does not constitute a “clip”. Posting that link has got to be against the geneva convention, I am sure of it.
Goddam dress. The whole lab here is now arguing about it. You’re all a virus! A Virus!
And yet, I don’t think I’ve seen anyone attacking Yahtzee for that particular reason. It is possible to voice your objection without being a complete asshole about it (which for Yahtzee, is kind of ironic). On the other hand, hiring a transphobic asshole who has evidently never written about games at all to write for a gaming site (and whose only writing up until this point is apparently conservative opinion writing) seems like a bizarre hiring choice for someone trying to “depoliticize game journalism.”
Only left wing politics count as politicization. Call of Duty’s single player plots are like offbrand Tom Clancy jingoism where America is beset on all sides by some sort of swarthy superaxis of Evil, but anyone who mentions that in a review is a obviously part of a SJW conspiracy to ruin gaming(it’s unclear why SJWs are so invested in “ruining gaming” for the rest of us Regular Joe Ubermensches).

What pushes this commentary into SJW territory is the argument that this kind of messaging in Call of Duty is actually responsible for US foreign policy, and that we as gamers are complicit in war crimes by buying it/playing it/not speaking up to denounce it.
But what about the argument that lizard aliens dominate the highest levels of US politics? How do you factor that in to the “commentary”?
LOL imaginary white dude persecution complex pretty strong right now. Setting aside that nobody has ever said that, and you can’t provide an example of that…
Even if someone did say that, what’s the problem again? Discussion of the political themes of art happens to every medium. Sometimes people disagree about what those themes are, and sometimes people find certain themes problematic, and sometimes people say hyperbolic or stupid things.
So what?

Because I don’t think it’s true? I can say that you are personally complicit in African resource wars because you use consumer electronics; the second order effects of those wars encompass the AIDS epidemic and the worst human suffering of our generation, so really you are a horrible human being. If you think that reasoning is objectionable or silly then you already understand why people don’t just nod silently when that argumentative strategy rears its head elsewhere.
And that kind of claim is at the heart of Sarkeesian’s interest in bust sizes, and it more generally underwrites the vehemence behind ‘rape culture’ arguments.
People say things I don’t think are true all the time. Doesn’t make your thread derail any less non sequitur, or your chain of logic any less critically broken.
Hahahhaa you being an MRA is just too perfect. Don’t worry buddy, the rest of the world is definitely behind you. Your friends who went away to college definitely never laugh about the shit you post on Facebook. You’re an informed and valuable contributor.
Seriously, nobody has accused anyone of being complicit in war crimes for buying COD, but in the extremely unlikely event that someone does, that person can join the multitudes of people who have been wrong on the internet. What the fuck does that have to do with ethics in video game journalism, death threats, gender roles in games, or anything else that falls under the umbrella of #GamerGate?
I understand that you don’t agree with AS. That wasn’t the area that needed elaboration. Why should I care that you disagree?
Except the Red Cross. But hey, details.
(Also, virtual punishments. But still!)
I’m just glad that MRA is probably just as offensive to those it is applied to as SJW is to me.

I don’t see it as an attempt to depoliticize game journalism, but rather the inevitable result of that politicization, in the same way that’s happened in other contexts after politicization - opposing political voices arise and there’s no going back. And if that’s the case, having a diverse range of opinions and perspectives is probably the best option, instead of trying to be gaming’s MSNBC or Fox News. The idea of a gaming publication hiring someone who hasn’t written about games before is probably more usual than not, however.
Certainly Yahtzee has said more crass and negative things about SJWs than anyone has in this thread, but that’s his style of humor and expressing opinions, so it’s only the crazies like VH who freak out about people like Yahtzee blasting the idiots who thought the rocket scientist should be scolded for his shirt instead of focusing on the enormity of his achievement. Having a good sense of humor, especially when it’s also self-deprecating, makes commentators like Yahtzee a lot more tolerable even when you disagree with them. On the other hand, nobody likes a shrill, sanctimonious sourpuss.
