Come on, it’s a pretty androcentric series of books; “strong” females aren’t the norm in Westeros.

Dinkage absolutely owns this show. Where even the casting of the kids was nailed to perfection, I would claim there is literally no one on this planet who could be better suited to be this character.

In specific, picking Drogo over Dany as the more important of the two is insanity.

Actually I thought the guy they got looked very Mr Burns-ish. I like whoever suggested Wallace Shawn as a possibility, he always had Vizzini’s voice in my mind. They guy was the perfect amount of calculating don’t-give-a-fuckitude though, so his scene was great. Catelyn had a pretty standout performance as well on that one. Good job all around, I’d say.

Enh. Robert and the rest of the gang treated Drogo like a main character, a big scary guy who could come over and wipe them out, potentially. And after starting as just a grunting pile of beef, lately he’d gotten some bigger scenes of kicking ass and making big speeches. If you’re unspoiled, there’s no reason not to believe he’s going to be a major player.

Because “last of her line” isn’t a huge, glaring main character flag all of a sudden?

That’s the thing about the series though, it takes your preconceptions about what a main character is, and what/who is good and evil, and tosses it all out the window.

But at no point is the story ever about Drogo. It’s always about Dany and her perceptions and her struggles and her personal growth. Drogo is so transparently a prop around which Dany grows in the first book, I can’t even.

I think it’s pretty easy to get tricked into thinking Drogo is going to be a main character. I’ve seen various non-spoiled threads where people are saying “oh man, I can’t wait until Drogo invades with his hordes, that’ll be cool!”

Sure, Danys is one of the main characters, but they’ve spent a ton of time talking about the potential threat of the Dothraki, and when Drogo says they’re gonna invade, it’s easy to make the jump that it’ll happen someday.

I can’t decide if people posting reactions like this are taking the piss or not:

EDIT: oops, i guess that was already posted like twelve times. Sorry.

Tyrion
Littlefinger
Bronn
Arya
Jorah Mormont
Ned Stark
Joffrey

Best acted roles of season 1 in order in my opinion

Honorable mention to:

Cersei
Sansa
Dany
Lord Frey
Lysa Arryn
Her lactating breast

What a fantastic cast.

But, again, as Angie points out, you never see anything in the show from Drogo’s perspective. That entire storyline is told through Dany’s eyes.

Dany being a main character doesn’t a priori turn Drogo into a secondary character, does it? (from the perspective of the viewers)
I’m just thinking that it’s easier to empathise with him (big strong type, not much of a talker, brutish and violent-prone) than with say Jaime, the incestuous blonde prick, if you are a male viewer/reader, and we all know who is a main character and who isn’t after all. This perspective might be a bit skewed but I think it applies pretty well, generally speaking.

Thinking Drogo is a main character doesn’t automatically mean Dany isn’t as well.

I would have loved to see HBO change the series so that Ned doesn’t die. Like, he grabs a sword and heroically cuts his way out of the execution. They should have done that just to fuck with people.

Can you imagine the internet nerd rage if they had done it? it would have been epic!

It wouldn’t make sense. Ned’s death is part of the impetus for the war of 5 kings.

How many scenes featured Drogo but no Dany?

How many scenes featured Dany but no Drogo?

So, which one is the main character?

When you don’t know more than a few words or phrases of English in an English-speaking TV show-- you are not the main character. Jesus Tapdancing Christ, it’s not difficult.

That would have been hilarious, the reactions of the book readers and non book readers would have been reversed, and you’d never be able to people in the spoiler free thread why!

Again, this also doesn’t mean that he couldn’t be/become a main character.
Hell, main characters usually don’t die and Ned does, GoT just rolls over some common tropes and my guess is that since Drogo is “cool” and as Dany becomes stronger he becomes “cooler” most viewers would like to see more of him instead of having him die,; same applies to all characters that are somewhat likable, even if flawed, and end up badly.
