I think Claire Danes would be a great Brienne (she can be Hollywood ugly) except that she’s kinda short (Brienne is supposed to be taller than most men.)

That should be a fun bit of casting – I look forward to hearing who they pick.

I’ve always pictured Brienne as looking vaguely like Clea DuVall. Since she’s worked with HBO before, on Carnivale, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if she was considered for Brienne.

Still way too short.

Edit: I totally realize that HBO will not hire a seven-foot tall, muscular, ugly woman for the part. Still, it would be nice if the woman they hire isn’t completely tiny.

Actually, going by the casting side, HBO looks pretty interested in not going “Hollywood” for the role.

“[BRIENNE TARTH] FEMALE. Age: 20s. A skilled warrior in service to Renly Baratheon. Larger and stronger than most men, we first meet Brienne when she wins a tournament, defeating the famed Loras Tyrell. Big-boned and plain faced, she has an awkward personality, but is also honest and loyal. She is derisively known as “Brienne the Beauty”… RECURRING. (Season Two: 6 episodes/Season Appearances: Multiple Season) Must be a MINIMUM of 5’10″. Do NOT submit actresses that look like models. We are looking for a big, WARRIOR-TYPE woman that’s more MANLY than womanly.”

Funny, I had also been thinking of her! Though she really is a bit on the small side.

Cool, rather surprised how directly they are addressing the issue and not going mainstream. But judging by their track record in casting the other characters I don’t think we really need to worry!

Brienne should be played by Zoë Bell.

I strongly guess they’ll hire some tall German or Norwegian lady we’ve never heard of.

Too short.

While there is a little bit of that, Lannister high officers give me more of a 16th century European vibe.
In particular, when Twyin appeared on his horse after the battle I inmediately thought of emperor Charles V after the battle of Muhlberg.

Brienne needs to be cast by some ex-WWF wrestler. Nothing else would match the description!

I suggested Lindsay Hayward, but she’s 6’9" and people would start automatically shipping her with Gregor just because of the size.

Ba-dum tishhhh! He’ll be here all week, folks! Try the veal.

Sean Bean…

It’ already been said in this thread, but Peter Dinklage isn’t exactly Tyrion ugly, and yet…

Non-ugly Tyrion, non-equine Arya, normal-eyed Targaryens, not-so-unappealing Jorah etc. All they really might think about is a plausibly athletic build and somewhat unconventional looks. For her socially isolating “freakishness” they can fall back on the abnormality of her being a soldier and on the details of makeup and costuming.

It’s worth noting that Robin Weigert isn’t exactly a hideous woman, but they managed to make her look pretty plain and “mannish” when she was playing Calamity Jane on Deadwood. I suspect a lot of the mannish-ness of Brienne can be done through makeup and acting.

To me Brienne always looked like a younger Tilda Swinton.

They could cut her character entirely and lose almost nothing from the overall story.

You lose a large part of Jaime’s redemption, which is pretty important to the overall story.
