Yes the intro sequence serves a few functions: a little bit of storytelling through symbolism, geographic orientation, and the concept of the clockwork of peoples and plots that move underneath the surface of everything.
Of course, there are machinations and structures that were built long ago that kind of defy normal description or civil engineering (like The Wall) but it’s not steampunk at all.

IT’S NOT FUCKING STEAMPUNK.
Just because shit has gears in it doesn’t mean it’s FUCKING STEAMPUNK.
Jeezus Christ people, it’s CLOCKWORK.

Yes! And avoid all spoiler talk or ads for the second upcoming season until you’ve finished all of season 1.
O.o Ok ok , clockwork , I understand!
Will do, I figure if I don’t like it I can just sell it to a friend.
The worst part is I had HBO when this was on, and it just didn’t seem very interesting at the time, so I never even watched the first episode…
WH secretly abhors steampunk.

But there are no dials. Are you sure it isn’t just steampunk?
It’s more of a clockpunk aesthetic, I guess.
But no the show isn’t steampunk or clockpunk at all. It’s medieval fantasy.
Actually, isn’t it de reigeur in steampunk to put a bunch of gears on everything? Steam-powered gears, to be sure, but still.
The extras on the blu-ray set are fan-freaking-tastic. And watched episode 1 with the commentary. Really good stuff all around. Real labor of love, you can tell.

I am really impressed with the packaging too (australian limited edition copy). Photobook, episode guide with family trees and a map of westeros, and it all has a nice feel to it without being a big box that fills up too much of my shelf. Can’t wait to crack it open.
Speaking of, apparently on one of the commentaries, some of the kids “sing” the theme song, and it’s freaking adorable.
Damn, Emilia is sooooooo much hotter in her natural hair color.
I think I said just that in one of these threads. It’s a pretty remarkable improvement.

This is definitely worth a listen- it really is great and yes, adorable. Really I think sometimes we forget that child actors especially in something like this are really just kids.
Someone unlocked all the Easter Eggs on the blu-ray set.
Casting videos. The one for Maisie is amazing considering she was only 11 or so when they made it. She’s so effortless in front of the camera.

Woo! Just used my birthday gift card to pick up series 1 on DVD…29 bucks at Best Buy. FINALLY, I get to watch this.
Man I wish the Hound’s scene was in the show. But the last half of it cuts into Petyr’s own rather odious conversation.
— Alan
I just had 5 episode run , in one sitting, this show is soo good!
:o
I love the intro!
Anyone know when the first HBO season ends relative to the books?
I just marathoned through it and I need to read the rest of the story and want to pick it up, no way can i wait a year till the next series is released on DVD/Amazon Video.
Any help appreciated
Season 1 ends pretty much exactly where the first book ends. It looks like Season 2 will be intruding on Book 3 at least somewhat.
