I have read the first three books twice and I was totally shocked by my reaction to the end of episode 9. It really shook me up, even though I knew exactly what was going to happen. Pretty awesome and a huge testament to the quality of this show.

A trilogy made up of only two books would have most certainly reduced the re-readability of the books. :)

I’m not saying the total experience would be as good! But you have to ask yourself, do I feel lucky? No wait, you have to ask yourself, if Tolkien died before finishing Return of the King, would have preferred not to have read the other two books?

Taking into account that LotR was written as a single book, Tolkien dying would have changed quite a lot. As in, no LotR, at all. The Hobbit would still be available though…

I can’t recall who the authors involved are/were but wasn’t there some long fantasy series where the author died and somebody else came in and finished them off. I don’t know the answer to this question so I honestly don’t know, but how did that work out?

Were the “new author” books accepted by the longtime readers?

I think that was the Wheel of Time series, but I gave up on it after three or four books so I have no idea how that worked out.

I know the new Dune books are certainly not thought of as being in the same league as the first ones. No idea on Wheel of Time.

But still, it’s one of those things where it’s all a roll of the dice, depending on the writer.

The comment a few posts up where it’s rumored he had to lay out the plot for HBO makes me less-worried than I was before. Previously, GRRM had said things like “no, the overall plan isn’t written down anywhere”, which meant that if he were to say, keel over from a cheesy-fries-induced coronary during a Jets game, we would be SOL.

However, if “the plan” is indeed now locked inside a titanium safe buried in a bunker beneath HBO HQ, we can be assured that either HBO or the Martin estate would waste little time farming it out to some one to finish. The last book or three might not approach Martin’s brilliance, but at least we’ll get to read some rendition of the Dany/Jon wedding and the bloodshed accompanying the event.

Martin indicated that he’ll not let another writer finish the series for him in case he dies before finishing, at least according to Wikipedia.
